Wow! Stay classy OU

I wonder if Kappa Alpha Psi or Phi Beta Sigma ever had any knuckleheads in their fraternity house

For all the goofy stuff I did and saw as a pledge, it paled in comparison to what the Q dog pledges went through. And I was in one of those houses that took pride in being a tough pledgeship back when you could get away with it.

Every fraternity has a knucklehead or four.

Not all of them are dumb enough to record themselves singing racist songs and post them on the internet.

That takes a special kind of stupid.

I give thanks regularly that we didn't have this technology when I was a kid. It was rough enough without the instant permanent record looming over every action. We've all said and done things that we hope stay in the past. I don't know how you go through the motions of figuring out who you are these days. Either you're on cue at all times or your twitter bait.

LMAO! Yea, it really does. It doesn't appear to be a stealth rat either.

I'm not sure how you can say that FACTS "hold zero water"... They are facts.

You just sound like a bitter kid that didn't get invited to any of the parties in college so now you take it out in anyone that was in a geek organization.

You may want to be careful, there is a good chance the guy you work for was in a fraternity. You should thank him.

Freudian slip?

It is and cops and the media tend to love the ignorance - it makes their jobs much more easier.

Not sure where you go that out of my post. My point was there is a lot of good that comes from Greek organizations, and it's not just paying to hang out with people.

It was my first experience of running a business, and the skills I gained through my fraternity experience has carried over into the professional world.

  • Recruiting (hiring)
  • Member Development (training & developing employees)
  • Marketing
  • Financials (manage budget for 100+ member org.)
  • Facilities Management (manage house upgrades/renovations)
  • Community Service
  • Leadership Development

There aren't many other places where an 18-22 yr old will get the opportunity to learn these skills.

The military could do better.

Both my wife and I were Greek and we both paid our way. In addition our Greek orginizations were responsible for raising $50,000 every year for the Ronald McDs House. How much did you raise every year for charity while in college?

You mean the money everyones mommy and daddy gave them. Lets be honest, you all did not raise 50 grand all by yourselves.

Yea we did. By selling advertising and tickets. Now go on about your fundraising activities while on the Hill

This sounds an awful lot like you're making an excuse for people who are clearly racist. Even as an 80/90's kid growing up I sure as hell wasn't spouting this crap off in the locker room or with a group of my own friends in some random setting. To even attempt to make an excuse for this group of COLLEGE aged guys spouting this kind of crap would simply be asinine, video cameras or not.

Read this today about public shaming. And I'm not trying to directly connect the two as this incident is an order of magnitude worse and more sick than the tweet jokes in the article. But I think the lesson is still the same. Try to make good of a situation. Recognize that people, particularly college kids or younger, do and say stupid stuff, and then try to change them and the situation. Not just hit them with a blast of public shaming that's just going to put them in counseling. This is the internet age, and public shaming is seemingly worse than some criminal punishments.

Are a few knuckleheads really a big problem? Are themed parties at private residences a problem? The two major ones where action was swiftly taken were appropriate (ole miss pledge and OU). But thanks for trying to portray me as okay with the song they were singing

It's not just the song or just the noose. It's the pattern and general attitude.

Are the acts that bad in the grand scheme of things? Probably not, they're just incredibly stupid.

The problem is that rather than call the acts out as stupid and taking action toward actually ending the problem, people take up the position that it's not really a big problem, people are just butthurt, it's part of the experience, or any other number of blindingly dumb excuses people put forth.

Why not just make them stop? It's not that damn difficult.

Another reason I only spend my internet time on VN -- screw twitter, facebook and all those other stupid 'social media' sites.

Even if these people believe what they're chanting what's it to you? I don't get the sense that you want to hang out with them. They were on a bus they rented headed to what I assume was a private event so I doubt this was intended for public consumption. This wasn't directed to you or anyone you know. So what's your problem? Are you some sort of thought vigilante setting right the wrongs of those who would think evil into this world?

Yeah, why can't these people express blatant racist beliefs without being criticized for it?

What is the world coming to when you can't publicly express your exclusion of potential fraternity members by shouting racial slurs without someone, you know, not being okay with it?

This is not the America my parents grew up...wait, what?

What's the point of criticizing it? Like I posted, it wasn't intended for you or probably anyone who was not there. What makes you feel the need to comment on it? Are you obsessed with the musings of SAEs on a party bus? It is a job or a hobby?
