Wow! Stay classy OU

You got that I'm bitter and I'm painting 9 million frat members as racists out of that?

I thought I was pretty specific to the issues at hand and not the typical "I hate greeks, pay for your friends, etc" posts.

Is it that hard to simply address the issue or do you really not see anything wrong?

The chapter was shut down at OU within 24 hours of its release. What else do you want? The only thing that could be done to them happened and no one disagrees with it. I think SAE did a great job in that regard.

The place was closed within 24 hrs and that doesn't seem enough to you. Guess what? Another fraternity will be moving in to that house.

Again, the issue isn't just what happened at OU.

Its that this crap just keeps happening.

I agree with LW, shutting it down was a poor, knee jerk reaction. They had an opportunity to actually teach and fix the problem, rather than just bend to the will of the screeching class.

After hearing about this video for days, I finally watched it just now.
This is what has everyone all up-in-arms? I've heard people calling for the students to be expelled and I can't believe that is all they did. I expected them to have held a public lynchin'. I also keep hearing talk about how "there can be absolutely no tolerance for racism in this country."
While that sentiment sounds obvious, it's just as ignorant as the people who are the racists. It's like saying there can be absolutely no tolerance for stupid people in this country. It's going to exist. It just is. It will until long after all of us are dead and gone.
Don't get me wrong, these kids are idiots and I hope they are all sick with embarrassment for the rest of their lives, but expelling them from school for singing a stupid song while on a bus they probably had rented to take them to some party seems extreme.
My wife was very active in her sorority and she has told me stories about UT frats that are way worse than this. I used to DJ parties for frats at UT and they are all like this. I don't even think most of them are actually racist. One of them does and everyone else cares about trying to be funny and they don't have the stones to step up and correct someone.
This should be used as a learning experience for these guys. Kicking them out of school isn't the answer IMHO. People do have freedoms in this country. Even the freedom to be a total moron.
I'm reminded of a Ron Swanson quote: "The whole point of this country is if you want to eat garbage, balloon up to 600 pounds and die of a heart attack at 43, you can! You are free to do so. To me, that’s beautiful."
This is a line from a sitcom, so it's obviously supposed to be funny but hopefully you'll be able to make the connection to my point.

Who would you rather be today, the dude in the middle of this video or the infamous butt-chugger?
Just curious.

Are a few knuckleheads really a big problem? Are themed parties at private residences a problem? The two major ones where action was swiftly taken were appropriate (ole miss pledge and OU). But thanks for trying to portray me as okay with the song they were singing

Blackface is a big problem. You're trying so hard to defend frats that's you're digging yourself a hole.

Never saw blackface. Ever. Never heard any song like that in the video. Like I said the most offensive we ever got was wearing a sombrero

Jesus. You asked for examples of this stuff happening elsewhere, he gave them. You said you didn't have time to read them even though you asked for them, then said none of them were a big deal. I said blackface is definitely a big deal, and then you completely missed the point.

I never saw blackface ever, I never heard songs like that. Besides the Ole Miss loser, all he has are "incidents at cafeterias" and graffiti. It's not like videos like this are popping up at UGA, UF, Bama, etc etc.

I don't care if you've seen it and I'm not saying it happens everywhere. I'm just saying you're acting like it doesn't count as an incident and I respectfully disagree.

I agree that the stereotyping goes both ways, though. Membership in a fraternity doesn't make someone automatically lazy or entitled or whatever else, just like it doesn't make someone better than the people who take volcano hits and play Madden.

I didn't see it in his original post. Googling the stories, they seem to be individual knuckleheads, not fraternity wide

Frats usually have quite a few members who get off on being offensive. A lot of times those members guilty are just too immature to realize their actions are hurtful/offensive or just don't have the awareness to pick up on those things because they are self absorbed. The organizations have their good points, but this sh-t isn't an isolated event and many tend to overlook the negativities or act like they are a missionary recruiter after college, turning a blind eye to the negatives. Before anyone throws stats at me, I was in one too and saw the positives as well and am not condemning all frats in general, just the atmosphere that comes with it in a majority of cases.

Did I hear one of the talking heads right? Blacks make up only 5% on the student population at OK?

Greek life was awesome for me. I was an officer, I coordinated events, spoke in front of crowds of 90+ people, raised more money for philanthropies than any of the posters here *****ing about Greek life, and went to parties that weren't hosted in some jerk-off's apartment.

It all really prepared me for the professional world. Mommy and daddy didn't pay, either. I always had two jobs. So I guess you could say I worked harder than the chumps in this thread *****ing about greek life.

I've worked 2 jobs most of my life and I wasn't a Greek. So you don't work harder than everybody. I wasn't crying about these guys, or anybody in a fraternity. I just made a comment about somebody using politicians as fraternity examples.

I love this thread.

I'm going to make it a point to go hug a frat guy this weekend, with his pink polo and sperrys. Wish him and his goat locked in the basement a happy new year. :)

Seriously, everyone needs to relax. Whether you butt chug natty light, or drink Sam Adams and make jokes about those folks, we're all swimming in the same fishbowl.

I think the university handled this correctly. There are bad seeds in every organization, not just Greek organizations.

I pay my own dues without my parents' help and so do most of my brothers.

Acting like this particular SAE chapter reflects everyone affiliated with a Greek organization is nonsense.

I agree with that. But greek organizations are still some of the most (if not THE most) racially segregated groups on just about every college campus. There is a long-standing negative perception that comes along with that, and incidents like the one at OU reinforce that perception.
