Wow! Stay classy OU

I agree with that. But greek organizations are still some of the most (if not THE most) racially segregated groups on just about every college campus. There is a long-standing negative perception that comes along with that, and incidents like the one at OU reinforce that perception.

I agree, and that's primarily because the the alumni and their influence on the chapter. It is improving in a lot of places though. Slowly, but improving, nonetheless.

Issues like this need to be made aware of, though, and I'm glad it was.

That goes both ways though. There are fraternities that wouldn't accept me because I'm white.

Syracuse, UT, Florida, even an Asian frat at UC-Irvine all had blackface incidents in the recent past.

Duke had issues over a party in 2013 (Kappa Sigma).

Arizona State had issues over an MLK themed party (Tau Kappa Epsilon).

Clemson had a frat get suspended over a "Cripmas" party (SAE).

Washington University in St. Louis had a suspension over an incident in a dining hall during rush week. (SAE)

Lehigh had a frat suspended over racist graffiti and throwing eggs.(Sigma Chi)

Ole Miss suspended a frat after members hung a noose on a James Meredith statue. (Sigma Phi Epsilon)

That was after a 2 second google search going back 3 years.

What's the date on the Washington University one? I remembered about something happening with SAE, but I think it was before I had started school there.

(I'm just curious if SAE had gotten in trouble for something else, again, afterwards.)

This is true. Segregation, in this instance, is a two way street. But, historically, black fraternities sprung up on college campuses because they weren't going to be admitted to the existing organizations. The segregation hasn't changed much because the "white" fraternities aren't exactly going out of their way to recruit black members.

All I've learned from this thread is some frat people are great guys, some are average and some are douche bags. Kinda like non frat people.

Greek life was awesome for me. I was an officer, I coordinated events, spoke in front of crowds of 90+ people, raised more money for philanthropies than any of the posters here *****ing about Greek life, and went to parties that weren't hosted in some jerk-off's apartment....

I honestly don't care one way or another about Greeks vs Gamma Delta Iotas, but I found this very revealing.

So happy for you that you were able to go to Fancy Parties and not those in some tacky apartment somewhere.

Why is this a problem and why does it have to stop? What's it to you if these people wanna sing some offensive chant on a charter bus headed to a party? I guess I'm just one of those people who thinks the 1st amendment means what it says.

Someone thinks they're a constitutional expert. At this point, I'm quite certain you don't know much about the First Amendment.

2 members expelled from school. Liberal PC has gone overboard and become extremely over-reaching . The school president cited a zero tolerance policy for racial threatening. I'm baffled at the notion a threat ever occured in that video. There is no victim present, how did a threat occur? Singing a stupid song in a private setting, off of school premises and paid for by private funds should not be a university issue to begin with IMO. If they were shouting this from the quad at every black who walked by then I'd be more inclined to "accept" President Boren's reasoning. If the 1st can't even apply in private situations then it may be time to ammend the amendment.

Early 2013 I believe.

Where has anyone's "1st" rights been trampled by political correctness here no one has been arrested and it does not guarantee anywhere in the constitution the right to attend the university of Oklahoma nor does it guarantee anyone freedom from repercussions for what they say.

How does a gov't institution have the right to dictate what one says in privacy? I don't know the interworkings of all universities and their Greek system, but at UT we owned our fraternity house, we received no assistance from the university, our meals were catered by an outside entity paid for by us, so the extent of the universitiy's relationship with us was allowing us to have a chapter on file with the school and likely not much more. So I fail to see how what we did off campus was any of the school's business, let alone their jurisdiction.

Expelling someone for speech that doesn't coincide with the President or general public's views is PC. Anyone with common sense should not affiliate the fraternity guys actions with the university as a whole. That's as narrow minded as the stupid stuff they said. Just say those views don't express those of our entire university population and leave it at that. Don't cave to outside pressure trying to pin it on the university if they don't take action.

The national head quarters closed them down anyway so they are done either way. Now the students kicked out of school may have an interesting law suit they could file if they chose to do so. They won't because any smart lawyer would say stfu and let this pass otherwise you are screwed for life. Get it out of the news cycle.

I can more easily "accept" their shutting them down, especially from their own organization. My only issue is with expelling them. I contemplated mentioning the lawsuit because I feel like they'd have some grounds. Not sure what though, because I'm no legal expert. Although I did take both a business law and an agricultural law class 10 yrs ago in undergrad so I might be a VN expert.

You are no more guaranteed free speech on a public college campus than you are guaranteed admission to that same college. Every college in this country has a code of conduct.

How can we blame a Fraternity for the words of a drunken few? We don't blame all Muslims for the few who chop people's heads off to watch them roll on the street, or the few who fly planes into buildings, do we?

I blame all members of that particular chapter of that fraternity in the same way that I blame all Muslims who share the particular ideology of terrorists.
