Wow! Stay classy OU

You are no more guaranteed free speech on a public college campus than you are guaranteed admission to that same college. Every college in this country has a code of conduct.

they sang an offensive song in a private setting - and arguably were recorded in secret. It's a very big stretch under the code of conduct to expel them

I honestly don't care one way or another about Greeks vs Gamma Delta Iotas, but I found this very revealing.

So happy for you that you were able to go to Fancy Parties and not those in some tacky apartment somewhere.
A.J. often hosted parties in his apartment.

Where does this stop? It seems to me that if a student is recorded saying something that offends someone, that he can get kicked out of school. Is it because they mentioned an organization in their song? I just heard on the news that the members who were forced to move out of the frat house weren't even involved.

Should Butch have disciplined the entire football team because of A.J. Johnson's problems? Are all Vol football players guilty by association, and should the football team be disbanded?

So, nothing short of murder merits expulsion?
I think that words are much more benign than actions, don't you? Or, do you think that it is okay for the government to deny your participation at a state school due to your saying something stupid when you think you are not putting it out for public consumption? College students say stupid stuff every single day, especially if they are drinking.

I'm not familiar enough with the OU code of conduct to say whether or not I agree with you. But I sure as heck don't weep for racist idiots who have suffered the consequences of being racist idiots.

Someone thinks they're a constitutional expert. At this point, I'm quite certain you don't know much about the First Amendment.
Well it only took a day. Two people expelled from a public university without due process for saying the n-word. I'd say that qualifies as a 1st amendment violation or at least that's the way I remember it when I was sitting in Con Law as a 1L with all the other racist frat rats.

100% of males between 18-22 have made cruel asinine comments. These were just recorded.

Expulsion for this is just PC stupidity.

The government is not denying them participation. The faculty tasked with making that decision, made it.

If college is about preparing young people for the working world, then these idiots learned a valuable lesson. Had they done the same thing while employed, 90% of employers would have sacked them ASAP.

All I've learned from this thread is some frat people are great guys, some are average and some are douche bags. Kinda like non frat people.

Of course that's true but one thing that fraternities will unfortunately do is allow the douche bags powerful influence over the average guys and in some instances corrupt them. There was a fraternity at UT in 1999 (Kappa Alpha, I believe) that had pledges caught stealing Christmas decorations such as wreaths, ornaments, lights and figurines from homes in Sequoyah Hills and even from a local rest home (CLASSY!). One of the guys who was caught tearfully expressed shame to a KNS reporter and said that he didn't want to take part in what they were doing but didn't feel he had a choice if he wanted to be a brother. Peer pressure is strong in that environment and where leadership is weak and immoral there will be trouble.

I took a look at it out of curiosity and their justification would definitely be a stretch - particularly since the comments were made in private

I certainly dont defend what they said, but if that's the extent of their racism then I think there are plenty other worthy examples of racism in this country to get worked up about

No one has deprived them of their right to free speech. The School simply said that they don't wish to associate with kids who utilize their rights in that manner. These kids are still 100% free to use the N-word to their hearts' desire.

The first amendment does not protect you from the consequences of free speech.

But they aren't emoloyed. They are kids at college where 99% of what you do wouldn't fly in the real world.

The difference between these "racist idiots" and "racist idiots " like Sharpton and Farrakhan, etc. is what? Well, these guys are young, probably drunk, and trying to act in an outrageous way around their friends like young males often do, and they thought that they were doing it in private.

Sharpton, etc, are adults who make a living intentionally being racists. What consequences do they suffer?

Great. OU proved they have leaders as inept as UT.

Good point as well.

They seem to run and hide when a professor decides to spew idiocy. That same guy (or gal) would keep their trap shut in most cases if it not for the built in protection.

It in all likelihood wasn't on campus. The bus was just as likely in OKC going to a formal as it was sitting on school grounds. They're welcome to say whatever heinous things they want in a non-university sanctioned setting. Every fraternity in America would be shut down and every fraternity member would be expelled if they had access to everything said in a frat house, or apartment or dorm room for that matter. I've heard similar and worse in every setting around a college campus. We had fraternity shirts that donned the Confederate flag as do a lot of southern fraternities. We had flags hanging in our house as well, meanwhile we had 3 black guys in our fraternity. Didn't faze them one bit.

The faculty is employed by whom? Their checks are paid by whom? They are being kicked out of school because they said something that people didn't like.

Overcompensating for your states pathetic history with race relations?

Not really a good analogy; you're talking about an individual act compared to a bus full of people.

A better comparison would probably be what Duke lacrosse was accused of, and they basically did disband the team even though the accusations had zero substance.
