Yemi Makanjoula commits to Tennessee

I think Chism gets too much credit sometimes. Not to say that he didn't have a big impact, but I thought the pedestal that the fans (and he) put him(self) on was high.

there were quite a few games UT loses by double digits without Chism on the floor. There were nights he needed a back brace from all the heavy lifting

He played hard every night. He worked hard, and kept things light in the locker room. Chism was an under sized 5, and yet he defended Greg Oden and Damarcus Cousins as good or better than anyone else did.

He also hit some critical 3's for us. When he was trailing and spotting up for 3, it was a pure stroke. When he shot 3's in the half court set... not so much.

The headband is sorely missed

Ask yourselves this; Do we make the Elite 8 rum without Weezy?

No. On the other hand, do we make the Elite 8 run if we face 3-seed Georgetown in the 2nd round instead of 14-seed Ohio? I'm not so sure about that.

well since G'town couldn't beat Ohio and UT could I'd say that's a yes

Saying Chism didn't improve is being a tunnelvision as a supposed Pearlophite, or whatever that childish name is. Chism was a stud, did whatever asked, and took over games his last 2 years, with no big man help and no pg.

How about three?

Chris Lofton, Wayne Chism, JP Prince.

Prince went from uncontrollable liability to a key component of the elite 8 run. Chism went from raw big "depth" backing up Duke Crews to a UT all time great... and Chris Lofton, well...

Chism improved and developed into a really nice player but he's not a UT all time great

Because we all know the transitive property never fails in sports.

the goal in the tourney is to advance which UT did while G'town didn't. Trying to diminish the E8 appearance because of another team's failure is weak

Fyp.

No question that Ohio's upset made the road easier, but we still made the elite 8 and upsets happen all the time in the NCAA tourney. Look at this year and the teams that had a much easier road to the final four due to upsets. However, that doesn't take away the accomplishments of the teams that advanced.

Just because I'm pointing out that the run was aided by a highly improbable 14-3 upset doesn't mean I'm diminishing the accomplishment. It's just stating a fact.

And just because Ohio beat Georgetown doesn't guarantee UT would have.

Of course he's going to dramatically improve from 14 to 22.

Love Wayne, but as a senior he still had mental lapses, still took wild three point shots, still had up and down games.

I'm just saying I've watched him a long time. I never thought he'd be much in college. He improved a lot from the day he stepped on The Hill until when he graduated.

Kansas had a path paved in gold and squandered it

My question really is what specifically did Bruce Pearl do that directly improved Chism's game other than natural progression of age and experience?

Stats do not tell the whole story, but other than FT% what area did Chism show major improvement in from his freshman year until his senior year?

Don't fmp if you are wrong. I think you need to look up Chism's accomplishments and stats for his career. You don't get those recognitions, records and ranking by not improving. The argument that he didn't improve is really stupid. Sorry, but it is.

Again, I like Wayne and enjoyed watching him play. However, if we look at stats, which area did he really improve?

3-point %, slight decrease
FT%, significant increase
FG%, minimal increase
Rebounds and points increased along with more minutes played but nothing significant.
Assists stayed the same

You know how I feel about Pearl.

That said, I think Chism's game inside improved tremendously while at UT. Now I have no idea who that is credited to, but he became a very solid post player, albeit a tad bit out of control at times.

If you watch basketball and didn't see an improvement in his game, as he progressed through college without another big man, shooters or pg his jr/sr year, I can't help you. If you want to say he slightly improved because of age, that's your call. He was soft in HS. A finesse player and wasn't a banger. He developed a 3, his left off the board, his right off the board, his hands, his strength, his ball handling, his mental toughness and most dramatically, his ability to D up the other team's 3, 4 and 5 when necessary.

I agree. He improved tremendously. My argument is that the pedestal he's on is a bit high.
