Your Memphis Grizzlies Basketball Thread III

The luxury tax matters because Pera will dump salary to avoid it and we've made enough mistakes to prevent from fielding a title contending team to build around Ja, Bane, Des while at least 1 was on a rookie deal.

What you posted omits another cost of acquiring Smart. We didn't have to dump Adams' salary if we kept Tyus and didn't do this deal. The cost of Smart was a Top 12 pick, Sasser, Tyus, and Steven Adams....
I don’t care if they pay the tax or not. Adding Smart was at a significant dollar cost. Good on Pera, poor use by Kleiman.

I think we are over-selling the idea that I, at least, am worrying about Jaren. I just found the stat interesting, particularly the debate about whether you play him at the 5 or not. I know basketball is trying to go position-less, so maybe it doesn't really matter much.

By no means do I think acquiring Smart was a good idea. Particularly at the cost they paid.
Everyone in here’s default is to bang on Jaren.

Ja can’t play 5 games and Bane can’t play 20. The front office is tripping over themselves (himself) At every imaginable turn. Jaren is on a team friendly extension that I don’t think we can exclusively extend again. Odds are, next season is the last with Jaren.

They aren't going to pay the tax. They still have holes. Getting Smart pushed them over threshold for 24-25 tax.. The holes are still there. The Grizz had four options to get under for 24:25

Trade Adams and Roddy
Trade Clarke and Roddy
Trade Ziaire, Konchar, and Roddy
Trade Smart

Clarke was unmoveable with the Achilles. Kleiman won't admit mistake with Ziaire. (This isnt a dig at Konchar but he had next highest 24-25 cap figure so he had to be included to get under) Or admit mistake with Smart.

Noone is banging on Jaren. Jaren complements Ja and Bane's weaknesses well. Jaren just needs some one to complement his weaknesses. The team put him in a sh-t spot with Santi as his 4 ....

The closest thing Jaren has to a complementary player is John Konchar...

That’s just it, I wasn’t banging on JJJ. Just wondering where it’s best to play him and stumbled on that breakdown, with all its flaws.

The window is narrower than most Grizz faithful tend to believe. There’s no guarantee that the core (JJJ, Ja, Bane) stays here long term or even wants to be here long term. The NBA landscape is always changing. There’s two years guaranteed of the core remaining intact, and that’s if one of them doesn’t ask out or Pera requests the King to move one of their contracts.

Was the window even open? 1 playoff series win. They’ve been selling the potential future of this group for a while now.

I’m glad you said this. I was thinking we only had one more year of Jaren. This is actually good news to me

Back to back 2 seeds with a team of very early 20 something’s is a wide open window.

Unfortunately…. Self sabotage and injury.

The 2 seeds were fools gold. No one thought they were a threat to run deep, and they didn’t. Certainly the behavior and injuries didn’t help.

After watching them close last season and “play” this full season, I don’t see a forward looking deep run either.

That’s interesting

I'm not as pessimistic as some about the next season as some but the current cap/financial situation makes it nearly impossible to fill all the holes except if one of the 2 happen

The team gets to 2nd apron
King admits his mistakes

They'd be in a lot worse cap space if Ja didn't play wannabe gangster. It's why I continously harped on that one deal.

The $50mn to smart, kennard and clarke are the problem. Not konchar

They all were bad moves. Clarke is bad luck. Shoulda let Danny Green's salary fall off.

Smart was a bad move.

They have team option on Kennard so they can move from him

They have $16 million tied up in 3 guys who won't play meaningful playoff minutes (ZW, DR, JK). That's your money right there to find a player to complement Trip. Those 3 stayed so team could salary dump Adams.

Ja sells tickets but isn’t playoff material. JJJ can’t be the only guy playing both ends and still does dumb fouling. Smart is cooked based on the handful of what I saw.

Bane is great. I’m never gonna let him go, never gonna give him up.

GG would be huge if he can defend and rebound. But the other 3 aren’t waiting around for that it would seem?

If the window is 2 years, who they getting to contribute significantly and quickly as a defensive big? Weak draft doesn’t seem to provide the needed speed to match the contract timings.

I’m obviously not going to be confused for Ja’s #1 fan but he is absolutely what you need in the playoffs.

He can score almost at will in the half court. He is a star that is going to get calls.

Smart is awful.

I’m good with Clingan. If you can’t get Clingan I would trade out. No knock on shepherd or dillingham but they don’t fit unless you move Smart. I could be alone on this island but I believe Smart has negative value. Same for Clarke, same for Ziaire.

It’s crazy but they need GG to make another leap. If he carries weight as legitimate 6th man/bench scoring punch then this team is right there.
