‘18 QB Grad Transfer Keller Chryst (UT commit 3/1/18)

Think this guy will have a good shot at starting next year if we do get him. We need depth at QB regardless, but I get the feeling that this staff isn't high on any of our current quarterbacks.

It's pretty sad that preaching is needed to explain our current QB situation. no staff in their right mind wants to put all their eggs in one basket that has been hurt every year he has played the past 3 yrs. he also needs competition

It’s sad that anyone would be sad that everybody isn’t on board with an opinion.

Same. This might be a case of him being less bad than the others on the roster. Has it been said when he would be with the team?

General question... How does the offense that Helton will run compare to what Stanford runs? If they are similar, bringing in Chryst for a year would give our younger guys a year to learn the new offense without having the pressure of running it with a make shift OLine.

Helton runs a pro style. Stanford runs a pro style. The situation is good for us and him. Think Alabama pre Hurts. I believe thats what Pruitt likes.

Chryst could potentially be the most important signing of the ‘18 class but the vibe in here is like this thread is for a one legged kicker.

And could never play a friggin down. That’s what bothers me about all the worry and consternation. If he makes JG perform to his talent level, we win. If Chryst leads the team, we win. If Shrout or McBride blossom under Helton, we win.

I wanna win, and if that takes another scholarship slot, I’ll make that trade.

I think it would be a huge get! Either coming in and taking over or as the back up. Either way, with Weinke and Helton on staff, we should be able to get a QB ready to run our offense. JG just needs some proper teaching. He may end up being a good QB in a good system and having good teachers.

Luckily for all of us, we don’t make the decision...so

Nope otherwise they wouldn’t be looking.

Exactly. At the very least we need him for competition and depth.

All for multiple opinions. I'm not even saying Chryst would beat out JG as I hope he doesn't. There just is so much argument against it when there literally is zero harm in adding this player. It's a plus no matter how you play it.

If he beats out JG then he was a great pickup. If he doesn't he is a much better backup than what we have in roster. McBride is not a fit for this offense. Shrout has big potential but I really don't want him starting as a freshman.

Being ok with just McBride and Shrout as backups for a injury prone QB playing behind a bad OL is what I find completely odd. If Chryst or Minshew want to come help depth then I'm all for it

"i learned that they are a no nonsense type of program that knows what it takes to win games, as the coaching staffs resume speaks for itself," chryst said. "i really like the people involved in the program outside of the coaches as well."

both jarrett guarantano and will mcbride saw limited action last season and that's the extent of the current depth at the quarterback position for tennessee. The vols will add true freshman jt shrout this summer, but adding chryst would add quality depth with a player that has started games in the pac 12.

"looking at schools as a grad is different because you really have to prioritize what is important," chryst said. "coaching staff and scheme, as well as the guys on team and the motivation they have to win."

that's something he found in knoxville this weekend, as he heard a common message from a staff that's hungry to prove they can get it done both on the field and in recruiting. He also found a group of players that are tired of the offseason narrative and want to turn the corner in a big way.

"i hung out with some of the guys and i liked them and could tell they were hungry to win," chryst said. "hopefully i can make my decision soon so its best for all parties. It's too soon to rank (the schools) comparatively but i really liked what they have to offer."
