‘18 QB Grad Transfer Keller Chryst (UT commit 3/1/18)

What if Jones had taken a hard line with Hurd and some others and called their bluff, kept Lawson, and continued to run a disciplined program after 2015?

He would probably still be our coach. We probably would've finished off 2016 a little better and 2017 could've been at least respectable. But he didn't and it hurt us in the short term but I think exposing the AD and getting Fulmer and Pruitt will help our program way more in the long term than what Butch would've been able to accomplish. Earlier this month the national sports writer for the Orlando Sentinel ranked the QB situations for all SEC teams heading into 2018 spring practice. He has Tennessee as 5th best.

1. Alabama
2. Georgia
3. Auburn
4. Florida
5. TENNESSEE

6. Texas A&M
7. South Carolina
8. Missouri
9. LSU
10. Mississippi State
11. Ole Miss
12. Vanderbilt
13. Arkansas
14. Kentucky

I would like for this to be true, but the fact that he has Florida four spaces higher than Missouri destroys all of his credibility.

Hope you're wrong. I have no idea if he can beat out JG. If he does, I think that we are in a little trouble.

I'm not saying Chryst is the answer or that he even beats JG out as starting QB. I trust JP and Helton to make the best choice and will support whomever it is. On Paper and past results by each one is the only fair way to compare the 2 at this point. Although JG had the unfortunate task of playing in a Butch Jones offense, with a first time OC and QB Coach with his first power 5 job in 15+ yrs. Hard to overcome those factors and be successful. We now get to see how good or bad of QB that JG will be. Personally I think he will be really good now that he has real Coach's coaching him. Nonetheless at this point, when you just factor in stats, career record, TD/Int ratio and familiarity with the offense.Doing that it'sChryst that is the better of the 2 and it's not really close. In saying that, if we punished QB's by past play with inferior position Coach's and OC's, then Ainge and Crompton would not have made the huge improvements they did after Cut and Kiffin coached them. Stanford's QB coach has only been one 3 yrs, so it's hard to figure out what level QB coaching he got there. But not near what he will get here. Working in Chryst's favor is his record as a starting QB, he's played in a Pro Style Offense that relied on a power run game. Then have QB who can hit some big passes and not turn the ball over.B asked off recent history, we will need atleast one backup QB to make some starts because of injuries. I believe JG and Chryst both benefit from having new Coach's and believe both play well.

Not sure about that. Fitzgerald is a great runner, but he's not a good passer. He also has a pretty bad TD/Int ratio compared to what the better QB's have. Some of our fans complain about Chryst's completion % but Chryst's and Fitzgerald's are both around 55%. But Chryst doesn't turn it over like Fitzgerald does.I would put Locke,Tua, Bentley, Shurmur, Stidham and Fromm ahead of Fitzgerald as far as being a pure QB. Fitzgerald is more of a great athlete, who is an elite runner playing QB.

Fitzgerald has more pressure on him to perform than any of them. I’d bet if they weren’t running him to death he’d be a better passer. Running QBs a lot of time have more injuries they are hiding. That hinders their passing a lot especially if they aren’t super elusive like Lamar Jackson.

Our QB has to be a playmaker with his arm to win games this year. We’ll see what happens but it won’t be like Stanford at all.

This is where i disagree with you. I think the bulk of offense is going to be:

-run heavy
-multiple un balance lines and sets
-a lot of play action pull pass / flood concepts
-a lot of Outside and tunnel screens to WRs/TEs
-mesh concepts of gun

So if we can hit an occasional deep ball probably off play action i think it’s going to be a really qb friendly offense.

OH I believe that about Fulmer and Pruitt. And I guess we had to endure the multiple kicks to the crotch that the last few years have been in order to make the Fulmer/Pruitt combo possible. There were just some what ifs being thrown around about Dooley, so I threw one in about Jones. If Jones had done those things, I do believe we would have won the East in '16 and avoided losing 8 in '17. The bad part of that is we would have at least 5 more years with a coach who requires a bit of revisionist history just to have a division title ceiling.

Whatever it takes to get to 6 wins and a bowl game and I’m happy. Whoever the QB is, just get us to 6 wins.

Going to be a grind to get there, but I’m more optimistic now than before spring practice. We’ve still got some good pieces.

He was good. He wasn't asked to do much though. Only 5 200 yard games. The same amount of games with 230+ as JG in about half the starts.

And Fromm didn’t play much in the second half of several games. Part and parcel of being the field general of a dominant team. I believe JG has gotten an unfair rap on here, but the two aren’t comparable...performance wise.

Switch them from their teams and what would you have? Fromm would’ve been are alive if he was playing at UT last year.

Fromm would have done better in either situation. Kid has intangibles mentally you can't teach. People gravitate to the guy. guarantano has higher physical ceiling but has like some of that leadership items you see from fromm

Is transitive properties the conversation we’re having? Original point...was Fromm bordering special last season?

In most world’s Fromm is pretty damn good.

While Fromm is good, the point was that he didn't have to do anything special (like slinging it around a bunch of times) to win games. He had 8 games where he threw 16 or less passes, all wins. He was 4/7 against UF.
