'10 CA QB Chase Rettig

Also, if the staff thought he was so great as everyone seems to think all of a sudden, he would have been taken upstairs and offered on the spot, like some ther recruits were. Not, to down play, but he had a good camp in Hawaii. Everyone is on the CR bandwagon and ready to throw JS under the bus because he's waiting to 25th to commit. Munchie had a bad camp, he's gone, CR did ok, and was told to wait. Now, the staff decided to offer and now all of a sudden CR is better than JS. The staff knows best, and exactly who they want, regardless of what we fans think or want to happen.

Yup...that's about right. Now CR has his offer. I'm ready for him to commit and for us to move on from the Scroggin's episode

I'd take Rettig over Heaps any day of the week, to be honest. I thought Jesse was a better prospect as Heaps as well.

seriously, is all of your anger towards JS because he is waiting to July 25 or is it because you think hes all SC? youve certainly been lashing out since CR was offered and are quick to throw JS under the bus. lets look back about 3 weeks and i bet you were wishing JS would just commit to us already, and that CR (before his camp) was just a second option. im not thrilled about the wait, but i still want to handle this the best way we can in order to get him. i want CR too. i want both to be honest and i think that if JS commits and we can nab CR early there is a possibility (however slight)we can have both. right away, i want JS for the recruiting aspect. we still have a shot at JS but if we land him on July 25 (god willing), then what next? are you going to be mad that we took him and not CR? im not being a total douche...i think CR has real good upside and i think he will get hot here his senior year and attract a lot more attention. hopefully, we have him before then!

The coaches have been very selective and methodical with their QB offers. The fact that he didn't get an offer immediately means nothing.

Tom Luginbill is one of the smartest minds in the recruiting coverage business and he had this to say:

Rettig had one of the best individual workouts I have seen from a quarterback this spring and summer. He has been to several camps as well as Elite 11 regional workouts, but he has not looked quite like the guy we saw Saturday. On a day that the competition was surely heating up, especially when Joe Montana started taking snaps, Rettig got better and better.

This is a player who had a strong sophomore campaign followed by a disappointing junior season. Now that he has transferred to San Clemente High School, in Orange County, he could post staggering numbers as a senior, and might be on the verge of multiple scholarship offers coming his way in the fall. We have seen countless prospects in this class with several offers that possess nowhere near Rettig's physical tools. It makes you scratch your head as to why.

I'm not ready to say he is better than Scroggins, but to many observers at the Rising Stars camp he was close and better in some respects. I don't think the difference is as large as it was before this camp circuit. I believe that he has learned every where he has been, because it seemed like he just got increasingly better every camp he attended.

You're out of your mind. I'm so glad that you are just some guy with an opinion (usually a very faulted one) and not in the business of running our recruiting program.

Jake Heaps is head and shoulders the best QB in this class. No question. There's no way you can look at his film and not see the talent. He has everything you want. Heaps has the most star quality of any QB in this class. He is the guy most likely to light in up in college. Everyone else has question marks. With Heaps you just sit back and relax because you know he is going to get it done.

All I'm saying is that camp performance doesn't equate to a Saturday in the Swamp or in Tuscaloosa against good defenses. It's alittle different with schemes etc than throwing a button hook or post at a camp.

You can actually tell a whole helluva lot by bringing a guy to camp. That's one reason the coaches wanted to bring so many guys in. That's the best evaluation tool they have. You have a guy that doesn't have a single offer and is fighting like hell to earn one. There's pressure to perform there. Guys like Munchie Legaux let that get to him and underperformed (not that he was ever that capable to begin with) and guys like Rettig shone enough to earn an MVP award.

Again, it's the best tool they have so I wouldn't dismiss it as easily as you have. The coaches certainly do not.

We waited to see if he would commit after our camp, then SC's (Jesse said in an interview right after our camp that he was ready to get this over with and that SC had waited to offer him), and wanted to decide within the week...then he bumps it back 6 weeks more, then its last week, now it's back right before fall camp starts. Meanwhile QB commits have been dropping like flies, off the board.
enough is enough, IMHO.

I've liked Rettig since our camp, and said beforehand that we should offer him and move on. Sure enough, within the next few days, he gets it.

I was more impressed by Scroggins highlights than Heaps, and never saw what the hype was about. I don't give a flying flip for your narcissistic, arrogant opinions either. You know where the ignore button is.

and we are still in the running for JS and therefore should not call it quits. we have a legit shot despite his SC lean. he is still the better of the two prospects. i dont think that the coaches are as sucked into the JS ordeal as you think. theres only a few QBs out there with proven talent and there are more that have yet to emerge. the coaches know this and are attacking it accordingly and with caution. JS is the best. CR is good. the coaches saw that CR performed well at the recent camp and pulled the trigger. looking back, i find it hard to believe that our coaches knew too much about the whole BC thing and just happened to get lucky. in short, the coaches are out for business and arent completley attached to JS. they are out to collect a QB and if that means putting pressure on JS then so be it. but they arent going to just give up on JS and into CR because he has more interest in UT than anyone else. but JS is the best on the board right now and they will go after him until NSD.

I agree with you that their is a slight chance of neither of us getting either one....but at the same time I really don't see that happening. It's pretty much anyone's guess at what an 18 yr old will do....but I see UT getting Rettig and USC getting Jesse. I just don't see why Jesse would choose USC over UT though since you guys are loaded at QB. Playing so close to his home may win out though.

I wish we had a better handle on what is going on with jesse as I think it would make things a bit less hazy. With Rettig not committing to UT on the spot, it kinda reminds me of how when Scroggins did not commit as well. SC fans thought we had him in the bag and I still do not feel 100% sure as well. In looking at things, there is a slight chance that neither SC or UT could get Scroogins or Rettig.

Rettig not committing right away is probably more indicative of him seeing what happens with Scroggins like the rest of us, or assuming that he will get other offers as his senior year / camps progress.

If I was in his shoes, I'd wait a a few days as well...especially since he was told to wait for Jesse to decide. It's a move to keep from looking like he's desperate for the offer. He could also be looking to see if other programs follow suit, as they seem to have done with other commits (Broussard, DT, being one of them).
Thirdly, he very well could wait until Jesse decides, to see how much competition he'd have.

Then you are not very good at evaluating talent. Plain and simple. Scroggins looks good on film, I admit. But Jake Heaps looks absolutely incredible.

And as long as you continue to post nonsense on here you can expect me to call you out on it. You could just leave. I don't think anyone's feelings would be hurt.

Your opinion is what it is...just speculation...Expert-wanna-be. Your take on Heaps is pure speculation. He has the exact same rating as Scroggins.
I personally would take Rettig over Heaps any day of the week. He's not as tall, nor is his arm as strong...plus, his being a Mormon means he may take off for a 2 yr mission (now that he's at BYU, where they encourage it, you'll probably see him do so, IMHO).

I don't need your blessing to have a valid opinion...get over yourself, big shot

I do love rettig's arm but Heaps is a winner. Has teken his team to state 2 yeras in a row. Heaps is proven. Rettig I believe has a better upside. BIG arm and looks to be able to be coached up. Has one of the better QB coaches around him in Cal and looks to be jumping the boards once he has players that can play at his new school. We could end up with the best QB if he blows up.

I agree. Heaps is on another level over Rettig & Scroggins. I really hate that we didn't land that guy.

TENNacious, not to pile on,but surely you can see how much more polished Heaps is over those other guys.

I saw Heaps float a pass out in the flat to his WR (for a TD)...that came mighty close to getting picked off. Why? Cause he put no mustard on it, when he clearly should've. We hear all the crap (folks just repeating what they heard one Rivals analyst say) about Rettig not being able to throw with touch...BS! His reel showed him putting plenty of touch on many of his throws. Especially when he was throwing deep downrange.

I'm basing most of my opinion about Rettig on his camp video, where the video is clear and you can see the ball's velocity and trajectory, as well as his mechanics and accuracy. HS highlight video is often so grainy and low-res you can't see the ball half the time

Youre giving him too much credit. Hes the same guy who told me you NEVER see good defenses on an offensive players recruiting/highlight reel.

Id be happy with JS but Id be JUST AS happy with Rettig at this point. Im as tired of Jesse dragging this out as TENNacious is, only difference is you dont see me spouting out hate about JS. I just wish TENNacious would quit insulting JS and his family because he MIGHT choose USC over UT. Talk about arrogance. Quit being such a homer.

no duh. its not going to show too many of his faults. hence the title "highlight" film. and as for the camp, he had a spectacular camp, but thats only a start. just look at his sophomore to junior slide in stats. that alone speaks that he needs more work. as for him being better than heaps, come on, really? all this talk about who has more upside and who will be better in 4 years is stupid. as of right now, heaps is the clear cut winner in this comparison. rettig may turn out better and have more physical tools, but heaps is still the better of the two now. and as for his "floater", im sure if you wanted you could look through all of CRs film and find one that DID get picked off. thats only one throw.

I have to agree. I get tired of recruit draggin out their decisions as well and I get more tired of hearing poster hate of players that are on the fence with their decision of which school to go to just because it may not look good for UT. What happens if he chooses UT? What are all these posters going to do then after running off at mouth about JS? They are going to say "Oh, he's the man" and "I knew he would make the right decision" stuff like that. These poeple look like fools to me.
These kids have their reasons for choosing the colleges they decide to attend and we just need to respect it and move on.

I completely agree with you here. I really that Jesse comes to Tennessee but I also really want Rettig....both would be just awesome. But regardless of what these guys choose there is simply no reason to insult them for their decision. We want them but it is crazy to hurl insults when a kid chooses another school.
