'10 CA QB Chase Rettig

I don't know why Stephens gets so much grief. He wasn't given much of a shot last year. What he did do on the field seemed a little better than what JC was doing...to me. He at least seems to have heart. I wish Crompton would give that a try at some point.

Stephens has as good of a shot as anyone at winning the starting position in 2010... 'maybe' better considering his time in Kiffin's system. It is 'certainly' better if JC faulters this fall and NS makes the most of it.

I disagree with that. I think Stephens was given a chance. I agree with you that he produced on the field better than Crompton, but that was not due to a lack of heart on Crompton's part. The effort was there. And he has all the physical tools, he just didn't have the mental part of the game down. I think this season will show whether or not he is capable of getting a handle over the mental part of the game or not.

In Crompton I trust! :birgits_giggle:

I'm actually being serious. I just don't think he was cut out for the spread. It's not like the rest of the offense did anything to help him. They were just as confused as he was. I think he'll do a lot better in a pro style offense. A lot better.

I agree. IMO, even though Stephens didn't set the world on fire last year, he still played better than Crompton did, in the same bad system.

stephens gets grief because he is a ginger, and therefore, lacks a soul.

but on a serious note. he definitely throws the deep ball well. but he lost his composure at times. i think he will most likely be the starter in 2010

100% agree. he may not be the starter this year, but he will see some playing time (likely more than some, but im giving JC the benefit of the doubt), not to mention by next year he will have had over a year of practicing and familiarizing himself with CLKs offensive scheme. even if we land JS and CR, neither would be ready to start 2010 right away, and NS would have the clear advantage. not to say he couldnt or wouldnt be replaced at some point during the season. best case scenario...he wouldnt have to be. as for Lamaison...no chance of him starting in 2010 IMO. he is there for depth.

If im not mistaken i believe he ran spread in highschool and hes run spread all his life..
I think he can play.. Is it possible to be this big of a flop?

I know I am going to get burned for saying this but I would rather have Retting at this stage than JS...Sounds like Retting has been waiting on the UT offer and wants to play for the Vols. IMO I do not want a qb to pick us just because his first option (USC) did not offer him sooner and decides to pick UT as a na na boo boo just because he is sore at USC and got his butt hurt because he was not offered by his main choice it seems (based on all the articles that I have read) We need a qb at Tennessee that is all heart and wants to play for the power T and it means something to him. IMO you will always get better play and performance out of guys with heart because they are passionate and their play matters. ..JMO

you say all of that under the assumption that rettig would rather come to UT then go to USC

i dont know which school he likes more, but i would guess that rettig would want to go to USC more than anywhere else

I'm beginning to like Rettig better and it has nothing to do with any of that meaningless recruiting stuff.

Rettig is simply starting to look like the better prospect based on his camp performances and improvements over the summer.

I wouldn't complain about either but the reports sound like Rettig may have the better upside... It is also telling that USC fans may want him more.

In describing Scroggins / USC you have also described closely the Retting / UT situation. He has been down the list and didn't catch an offer until others went elsewhere or look to be going elsewhere. Maybe he wants to reject us now and go BC because we didn't show enough faith in him?? or elsewhere.

I really think the kid will get a lot of attention in fall and it will be from some schools where distance not as big a factor as UT or BC.

If that's the case Larry then someone needs to yank the kid back to reality. It wasn't his fault but he played on a terrible team last year and didn't post great numbers. Maybe it isn't a realistic expectation against the competition he plays against but quite often the top tier players reveal themselves by carrying otherwise terrible teams.

He's just now really proven that he belongs in that top 10 conversation.... He really shouldn't have expected top 10 confidence before he earned it.

I was thinking that as well as I was typing. I like Rettings clips..and his poise IMO is outstanding. I hope we get Rettig but I believe this situation is based all on JS..if he goes to USC we get Rettig...if JS comes to UT then Rettig goes to USC...At this point I say we take Rettig and not look back..but I also see him getting the big head once more offers start pouring in. ..I also believe there is more to this story than it seems..and hope it works out for us in the end. I believe Rettig has the better arm

Crompton wasn't recruited to run the spread at Tennessee. He doesn't have near the mobility that is required to run it in college. He was listed as a pro style quarterback for a reason. Here are notable quarterbacks that are used in the spread.... Tim Tebow, Tyrell Pryor, Juice Williams, Daryll Clark, Colt McCoy, Todd Reesing, Zach Robinson, Robert Griffin, Jeremiah Mosoli and the list goes on. There are a few teams that run it without mobile quarterbacks but the only one that has been any good is Texas Tech. Even if Crompton was a guru at running the spread, it wouldn't have mattered because nobody else on offense knew what they were doing. The offense took more than one season to learn. Tajh Boyd would have been a good fit for the spread. Crompton was not.

Good post. About Crompton, Im hoping it was just the complicated system that was being run last year that screwed him up. Im hopeful that the simpler system that Kiffin will be using this year will make the game slow down for JC and he'll thrive. BTW, the previous statement isnt an slight on Clawson at all, just that his system was brought in at the wrong time and was too complicated to succeed in one year IMO.

Oh.....I hope we get Rettig (to stay on topic)

Hubbs mentioned Rettig knows about all the recruiting websites and visits them regularly.

So, Chase Rettig you are welcome at UT!!
