'10 CA QB Chase Rettig

"I liked Tennessee a lot and felt I did good there, but I never heard back from them after a few days after the camp," he said. "I wasn't sure how interested they were after that, but then they offered me right around the time I was thinking about committing to BC. It gave me something to think about and both schools are great, but I was already pretty much sold on BC."

The staff has really put themselves in a bad situation with QB recruiting this year. For all that they have accomplished in other areas, whatever their gameplan was for landing a QB has failed miserably.

Tennessee dropped the ball on this one.

But..... let's not forget, the ONLY reason BC offered this kid is because their "solid" commit pulled a switcharoo and commited to Michigan St.

So BC wasn't Mr. Loyal to this kid as much as he wants to think.

Oh well, good luck to him.

I think David Reaves is the weakest link on this staff hands down....we gotta do better
I understand our philosophy of hiring him so early....but we gotta do better in the QB coach department

Wow. We're in trouble.

No, not really. We will have at least 3 QB's on roster next season. Stephens-Lamaison-2010 QB-maybe Rozier if he doesn't quit. That's 4 QB's and 3 at least. All we have to do is get 1 QB this class and start working on the 2011 class.

Stephens and Lamaison will easily be 1 and 2 for the 2010 season.

I think this years QB issues is the direct result of 2 things.....

#1 Tennessee hasn't developed/produced a legitimate NFL QB since Peyton Manning and that was 12 years ago when these kids were 5 and 6 years old. Fulmer brought in 1 Top Tier QB after Manning and that was Crompton and he hasn't produced.

#2 Our coaching staff didn't want to settle. Initially we offered, Heaps, Bell, Scroggins and a couple more. We didn't jump at players like Rees, Brunetti and Rettig. Kiffin and Co. said they wanted the best. I honestly appreciate that.

Now I think if Jesse doesn't come to UT, then I say they get a juco kid here and maybe go hard after Brunetti. Then start July 26th on the Top dog for 2011. No need to cry over spilt milk. I only see 2 of these kids making waved down the road as it is, thats Scroggins and Blake Bell. Bell is a beast and will thrive in that gun slinging offense at OU.

Good luck Mr. Rettig, maybe we'll see you in the Chick-fil-a bowl someday

Haven't had a quarterback that was drafted high but Ainge was drafted. He was competing for the Jets starting job before they drafted Sanchez. I'm not saying he would have won the job but at least he was in it. Also, this is a completely different coaching staff. Tennessee may not have produced anyone special since Peyton Manning but the new staff has coaches who have worked with Brees, Leinart, Orton, Booty. I'm not sure about Palmer and Sanchez but I think they might have been around both for one year each. This staff is one of the better staffs to work with if you're a quarterback imo.

And guys, did you ever think that maybe playing at Tennessee is like playing anywhere nowadays? I mean, the last time we entered December with hopes of being in the MNC game was 2001. I mean, sure, you can get a kid in town, and he'll ooooh and aaaah about our big stadium and the Rock, but do you guys ever think the kids might actually want more? And that the pressure of starting as a freshman in the SEC with one of the youngest OLs in the country is not something that they look forward to?

Wow. We're in trouble.

its a little early for that dont you think man ???

i still think rees has a chance of backing out on ND and coming here, mean while they need to get an offer out to grayson TODAY!!! and look hard at newton. then start soldifying the OL and the rest will fall into place.

I think Cam is important to get a commit from too. Even if he NEVER takes a snap at QB, his name alone could get the attention of other talent IMO.

We have been forced into a situation where we have to bring in guys that normally wouldn't see the field here because we are so thin at the position. That is exactly what Kiffin cited as the reason he let Tajh Boyd go. You guys are talking about numbers, it's not about the numbers. We could bring as many scrubs onto the team as we wanted to. It's about getting quality depth at the position and we don't have it. We are devoid of talent at the QB position and are bringing in guys that we never would have recruited if not in this situation. It should be very concerning to all Vol fans. If we are going to dig out of this hole, we need talent at QB -- not just bodies.

I know what you saying man. But this is just ridiculous. We mised on EVERYONE:

Heaps- we had NO chance, still pursued hard
Scroggins- thought we had him locked, underestimated USC
Hendrix- wanted to commit, we told him he couldn't, he said F-UT
Rees- we wanted him bad, he still went to ND as their #2 2010 QB
Rettig- didn't want him too much and he knew it, now we do, he said F-UT

there may be better quarterbacks emerge in the fall. We are still pushing for Rees, that door not closed

I think this is a situation where Kiffin is learning that it's not as easy to get a kid to Knoxville as it is to get one to LA. I don't think he's begging for the one who's name I dare not mention, but if he were able to come back, and if he wanted to, I'm sure Kiffin would take him, for depth if anything.

And yes, we are screwed. Because if Scroggins isn't coming, then we don't get Ambles or Prater, and it'd take some work to keep Milton onboard. We might not get Stone, either.

I understand your point but these kids haven't seen a relevant team with a big orange T on the side of the helment, possibly ever. In the last 4 years BC has won the ACC and played in a BCS game, USC ALWAYS plays in BCS games, as does Florida and Oklahoma. Trust me when I say this, Tennessee is only relevant in Tennessee. I have lived on all 3 coasts and people talk about USC, Florida, BAMA, OSU, Texas, OU etc etc....people look at Tennessee as an after thought.

Now I'm not saying this program won't reach elite status in 2 or 3 years, but right now we're no different than schools like UNC, Texas A&M, Cal, Wisconsin, etc etc....middle of the road. Sorry I said this but its true

What upsets me is that I feel like one minute something monumental is going to happen, and the next I feel like we're going to sign either nobody or "a" nobody and be up crap creek without a paddle.

Maybes are not going to get us to where we need to be. Neither are bottom of the top-10 recruiting classes.

When you have to depend on getting a guy to de-commit or waiting on the off chance that someone new will emerge, then you are not in a good situation. That's not how you have success. You may get lucky and get a stud, but that isn't very likely. The more likely scenario is that you take guys that you normally wouldn't take because you don't have a choice.

And a Boyd would have been more valuble than most of the guys left on our board, IMO.

It's July. Keep in mind that Kiffin thought he had Marve in the bag. I think that slowed us down in our QB recruiting. We'll be fine. I expect us to pull Rees or someone else that is currently committed.

Give the guy a year to do his job!!!
Good lord!

Actually, this mini-meltdown is a very nice practice run for how things are going to turn around here after JS heads to USC.

Let's throw Brunetti in there too since we also whiffed on him. If there is a QB in the class that we have not seen that will surpass either Heaps, Scroggins, Brunetti, Hendrix and even Rees or Rettig, I will be surprised...

Is it possible that Rettig's plan was to commit somewhere before Scroggins to not look like he was "settling" for the place that Scroggins doesn't choose? Meaning he doesn't want to look inferior to Scroggins by taking his left over team. He could later switch his commitment to Tennessee or USC without looking like he just took the leftover offer.

We should know firsthand that commitments are only good once they're signed LOI's.

This rebuilding is going to take 2To 3 years if not longer! We can wish all we want, it's just the way it is. Snap our fingers and we get all 5stars.BS!

Boyd would have been more valuable than most in this recruiting class.

We are on plan H right now. We've struck out on every at bat. The guys that are options right now are not the kind of players we want to recruit here.

I agree. 100%. We could get lucky on a guy nobody else wants, but how likely is that? Not very.
