'10 CA QB Chase Rettig

If he knew Scroggins would be a Vol, why didn't he just wait on his gauranteed USC offer? He could've stayed at home and played for a powerhouse...

Maybe he got pissed at USC for not offering him like he was at us. Maybe he just didn't want to wait. No one knows! Everyone needs to just chill out. Gonna run that blood pressure up to all time highs.

The staff has really put themselves in a bad situation with QB recruiting this year. For all that they have accomplished in other areas, whatever their gameplan was for landing a QB has failed miserably.

I do not think that you can look at it this way. No matter what any "source" has to say, Scroggins has not come public with a decision yet so the staff can't be judged on him. Even if he commits to USC, there is no denying that our coaches worked their tales off to get him. Bell was a lock to OU from the get go, Heaps chose the religious route. There are just somethings you can not control in recruiting (i.e. religion, distance, childhood favorite). Add to it a year that is not as loaded with top flight prospects, and it gets a little harder. We are also a unproven commodity on the field right now. It was Kiffin who also said that recruiting a QB is most often a 2 year process.

I agree that you can not count on other de-committing and on stars emerging as seniors. There are probably only 1 or 2 QB's in this class that would compete day 1 for the starting job. The 2010 job will be between Stephens and Lamaison (unless they land Newton). Hopefully the coaches can find and get someone that they think has potential and develop that potential for the starting job or depth after that. While the situation is dire, I do not think that it is as dire as some make it out to be.

He is actually heading to a program in shambles. They just fired a solid coach and have had 2 or 3 players decommit in the past couple of weeks. Go to the BC boards. They have NO confidence in their team this upcoming year. Most are predicting them at 4-8 or 3-9...
As for USC, they pretty much did gaurantee him an offer if Scroggins didn't go there. And I've not seen any evidence to support the idea that Cali recruits can't resist a USC offer. Most who get one end up as Trojans...

geez, does this sound like any other team that was in the hunt for rettig? come on man look around many around the country would consider our program to be in shambles, and while i have never visited a bc board (there are only 24 hours in the day) i'm sure that their negativity is pretty similar to alot of the doom and gloom around here lately...at the end of the day this is not a big deal, i am confident that we will have enough quarterbacks to field a football team in 2010.

I think we'll find out the answer to the Boyd thing in time. Just watch his career at Clemson.

We didn't strike out on Marve. We couldn't even talk to him. Everything indicated that he was a Vol and he backed out at the last minute. The only real strike out so far is Heaps. The coaches have only put the full court press on 2 QBs...Heaps and Scroggins.

The coaches realize that they are playing catch up and they also realize that QBs can't sign anywhere until February.

The Boyd situation was a mistake regardless of what happens at Clemson. Just because he fails there, doesn't mean he necessarily would have here. He is more of a pro style QB than some of the guys we have offered in this class and Kiffin just screwed up on that. He was banking on landing a guy in this class and that hasn't happened. That's what that situation was going to be judged on. If he landed an elite QB, the sting of losing Boyd would not have been so great. He hasn't and he very likely won't. That was just the first mistake of many that he has made recruiting QBs.

If Rettig went to USC barring 2 injuries in the same season i would bet my house on him not getting a start for the whole of his career.

My only gripe is we were slow playing a guy that was really wanting an offer. When someone finally offered he was ready to commit to the team that showed him they wanted him. We could have been the team that landed him and but instead we expected him to wait.

The negativity is getting overwhelming. Sab, I thought you were going to Ireland to see a girl. Can you go on and stay till after Scroggins announces? I am not bagging on you, but stop with the chicken little stuff.

The staff worked very, very hard for Scroggins and Heaps. No doubt about it. But what about options C, D, E, and F: Brunetti, Rees, Rettig, and Hendrix?

How many passes has Boyd thrown at clemson???
How do you know it was a mistake?

Time to move on from boyd.....

Quarterbacking isn't just about talent. Boyd may have had the talent and lacked in other areas. Recruiting isn't about grabbing big name kids. It's about putting together a team that can win.

I haven't seen any doom and gloom around here lately. Everything is positive from what I can tell. Most are predicting 7 to 9 win season and a top 10 class. BC fans are say 3-9. I'm positive we will have enough QBs to field a team, but I don't just want bodies at QB. We had that last year. I'd like to actually have a QB...

just because we are desperate doesn't mean that we should act desperate...we have to keep our poker face on and be confident and selective in our recruitment of quarterbacks...if we're not sure about a guy then we should not offer him...it's better to miss on a good player than to land a bunch of terrible players.

You might want to tell USC fans that. They are HUGE on Rettig and a few of them like him better than Scroggins. He has better size and the strongest arm in the 2010 class. Fine tune his mechanics and teach him a little more about the game, and he could be a monster...

Agreed. I just thought Rettig would be a good get regardless of who else is out there. I like Newton as well but understand the character issues etc. The poker face is good but I hope in the end we aren't holding aces and eights.

Not to mention the 'elephant in the room' on this QB stuff, but when there have been concerns expressed about any of our staff, it has been about the QB coach.

Is that criticism fair?

When you consider Rettig's choices, BC made sense if he wanted to go to a good academic Catholic institution in a metropolitan area. He fits the mold. He was not looking for just football. And in comparison that is all we could offer.

"I liked Tennessee a lot and felt I did good there, but I never heard back from them after a few days after the camp," he said. "I wasn't sure how interested they were after that, but then they offered me right around the time I was thinking about committing to BC. It gave me something to think about and both schools are great, but I was already pretty much sold on BC."

it sucks to lose out in the qb race like we are. but senior years still have to be played. I would imagine a few more guys that are un heard of now will have a big fall and make some noise in the recruiting world. i dont feel as bad especially since scroggins hasnt committed else where yet

it was almost worth losing CR to see a self-styled insider get exposed for the poser fraud he is
