If he knew Scroggins would be a Vol, why didn't he just wait on his gauranteed USC offer? He could've stayed at home and played for a powerhouse...
The staff has really put themselves in a bad situation with QB recruiting this year. For all that they have accomplished in other areas, whatever their gameplan was for landing a QB has failed miserably.
He is actually heading to a program in shambles. They just fired a solid coach and have had 2 or 3 players decommit in the past couple of weeks. Go to the BC boards. They have NO confidence in their team this upcoming year. Most are predicting them at 4-8 or 3-9...
As for USC, they pretty much did gaurantee him an offer if Scroggins didn't go there. And I've not seen any evidence to support the idea that Cali recruits can't resist a USC offer. Most who get one end up as Trojans...
I think we'll find out the answer to the Boyd thing in time. Just watch his career at Clemson.
We didn't strike out on Marve. We couldn't even talk to him. Everything indicated that he was a Vol and he backed out at the last minute. The only real strike out so far is Heaps. The coaches have only put the full court press on 2 QBs...Heaps and Scroggins.
The coaches realize that they are playing catch up and they also realize that QBs can't sign anywhere until February.
geez, does this sound like any other team that was in the hunt for rettig? come on man look around many around the country would consider our program to be in shambles, and while i have never visited a bc board (there are only 24 hours in the day) i'm sure that their negativity is pretty similar to alot of the doom and gloom around here lately...at the end of the day this is not a big deal, i am confident that we will have enough quarterbacks to field a football team in 2010.
I do not think that you can look at it this way. No matter what any "source" has to say, Scroggins has not come public with a decision yet so the staff can't be judged on him. Even if he commits to USC, there is no denying that our coaches worked their tales off to get him. Bell was a lock to OU from the get go, Heaps chose the religious route. There are just somethings you can not control in recruiting (i.e. religion, distance, childhood favorite). Add to it a year that is not as loaded with top flight prospects, and it gets a little harder. We are also a unproven commodity on the field right now. It was Kiffin who also said that recruiting a QB is most often a 2 year process.
The Boyd situation was a mistake regardless of what happens at Clemson. Just because he fails there, doesn't mean he necessarily would have here. He is more of a pro style QB than some of the guys we have offered in this class and Kiffin just screwed up on that. He was banking on landing a guy in this class and that hasn't happened. That's what that situation was going to be judged on. If he landed an elite QB, the sting of losing Boyd would not have been so great. He hasn't and he very likely won't. That was just the first mistake of many that he has made recruiting QBs.

My only gripe is we were slow playing a guy that was really wanting an offer. When someone finally offered he was ready to commit to the team that showed him they wanted him. We could have been the team that landed him and but instead we expected him to wait.
If Rettig went to USC barring 2 injuries in the same season i would bet my house on him not getting a start for the whole of his career.
just because we are desperate doesn't mean that we should act desperate...we have to keep our poker face on and be confident and selective in our recruitment of quarterbacks...if we're not sure about a guy then we should not offer him...it's better to miss on a good player than to land a bunch of terrible players.
