What you're missing here is, not unlike other schools (ND comes to mind), we are looking to take 2 QB's.
Offering Rees had no practical implications against Rettig.
If Scroggins were to choose UT, Rettig was assumed to take the USC offer. That leaves one other spot (Rees).
If Scroggins chose USC, then Rettig would be the #1 guy. That still leaves one spot (Rees). Tracking with me, here?
I was hoping that we would have offered Rettig unconditionally, regardless of Jesse's decision.
CLK and staff screwed the pooch on this one, as far as I can tell. Who knows what their thought processes were?
I know that you had two to offer but I guess that is where Lane did not learn from Pete
Why did they not offer Rettig after they offered Jesse and say "may the best man win"? Let them compete for the job in a sense. It is the SEC right?
Pete is telling Jesse "Barkley is pretty dang good and if you think you can beat him out, prove it. " Carrolls whole time at SC has been about guys battling on a daily basis for a starting job.
With Rees being given the offer, Rettig was looked at being the #3 guy and you can bet people posting on here about how CLK did not want him in the first place did not help the matter as it was already stated that he read this board.
If by chance, JS goes to UT, I hope we go after Rettig but from what I have read about him, he is BC bound and we both missed out on a good QB

Now this is really going to get interesting... The roller coaster of recruiting
It was no more than 2 weeks ago and JS walked on water... Last week Rettig walked on water and now most people are saying "good riddance"
I still think that when UT offered Rees, it sealed the deal for Rettig to go to somewhere else. Why would he be told that it was up to Jesse and he would be next in line and than the next thing the kid hears, they offered another QB. We all have to remember we are dealing with 17 year old kids and they can be emotional and need attention. When a coach says you are our #2 and then the go out and offer another QB, you can kiss that kid goodbye.
This would be no different than Carroll telling Jesse we are only taking one QB and you are the one we are offering and than two weeks later, we offer Rettig or any other QB.
Kids are looking for loyality and truth from coaches. With the internet and message boards, word gets out fast and that can be good or bad for coaches and recruits..
I do not see Rettig going against his word with BC as he has already stating he wouldnt and that already happened with BC and the first QB.
Should be an interesting week as usual
Bottom line is...Jesse strung us out, and put the staff between a rock and a hard place, with his delay until July 25th.
He knows damn well all the top QB's are G-O-N-E by then! THAT is what pisses me off here. If he wants his fanny wired to the bench at the Coliseum for the next 3+yrs...that's fine. But it's late in the 4th quarter here for QB recruits. Jesse wants to make us sit on our hands until the buzzer goes off, waiting to see what he decides.
That puts a staff in our predicament in an untenable position. Once BC offered Rettig, we should have immediately done the same, and just be willing to let the chips fall where they may. Better to come away with a QB that is roughly on par with Scroggins, than to wait and be totally empty-handed...as Jesse is apparently about to do.
I'm just getting ready, and rehearsing my "Go Barkley-Keep Jesse's @$$ on the bench for 4yrs" dance...want to see it?...here it goes...

:dance2: Go Barkley...Go Barkley... Go-Go. It's your birthday...:dance2:
I feel like the only way I cannot view this as something of a fumble by the staff is if Jesse Scroggins commits to UT. I mean no joke, it seriously feels like either a huge pie in the face from all the QB prospects because of our propensity to offer at odd times, or that we are simply not worried about other QB's that much because of an extremely high level of confidence from the staff on landing Scroggins.
For all those guys panic stricken over losing out on these QB's... remember this is a down year at the position. Whoever they land... they will recruit over them in 2011 if possible. Newton probably is the best QB talent available this year.
If these coaches who recruit from a multi-year perspective don't think a kid is worthy then they shouldn't push for him just to have a warm body.
Yeah. Talk about a kick in the nuts. A guy we saw at camp and waited over a month to offer went somewhere else. I hope Kiffin doesn't become an alcoholic over this.
Dude...I got my opinion, and you got yours. How about you don't tell me what to think, and I promise not to tell you what to think? Pretty simple request.dude. literally 50% of your posts are about scroggins sitting on the bench at USC. i even saw that you signed up for a USC board and said the same thing on it. you've made your opinion known. you think hes gonna ride the bench forever. we get it. you dont have to be such a dick. JS doesnt owe us anything
Those 2 QB offers were obviously half-hearted offers, probably told to wait to announce until Jesse decides, or something along those lines. I'm thinking part of Rettig's going with BC is that he didn't fancy the idea of playing 2nd fiddle to Jesse. With BC only taking one, and us 2...that likely had some part to play as well. Thanks Vader and you can bet that PC is telling jesse, look at UT who has offered two other qb's already and you are the only one offered and you are the only one we want :air_kiss:
It's way too early to be pessimistic about landing a good QB. If BC can rebound from the decommitment of a 4-star QB there's no reason UT can't pick up a really good player even if Scroggins chooses USC.
Rettig wasn't on anyone's radar until recently. As the season progresses other QB's will blow up and start getting attention. In any case a lot of minds can change between now and signing day.
Good luck to the Vols.
I think he chose BC as a security net honestly. He'll still pick up offers, and if he some how did get a USC offer, he might bolt. This would also mean Jscroggs to UT.
If Scroggins isn't worried about Barkley then he won't be worried about Rettig. I doubt USC even offers Rettig. I don't want Scroggins at this point anyways.
Anyways, I just thought I'd give this thread a bump with commitments from Ambles and Milton. The staff always said they are going to continue calling kids who have verbal commitments. I would prefer Bray and believe Bray is more likely to back out on SDST than Rettig with BC. I just think Rettig has to be looking at us and I'm sure this staff is still in his ear. The only WR Boston College has so far for this class is a 2*. His other offers were Syracuse, Tulane, Villanova and New Hampshire. This may sound stupid but I didn't even know Villanova had a football team... So, the quarterback saga continues and I wouldn't be surprised if Rettig is regretting his decision.
I think that Rettig is not totally sold on his football future after college. He is an extremely bright kid and Catholic. He also grew up in a major metropolitan area. Well, guess what. Boston College is a Catholic University in a major metropolitan area. UT is in a big small town in the south that is totally culturally different and not ranked as high as BC academically.
Not sure he was ready to be the the big fish in the big pond of the SEC though. Remember football on the left coast is completely different than the south.
