'10 CA QB Chase Rettig

Doesnt do a lot of good to make the correct reads, if your arm cant get it to the receiver fast enough or in the right spot. You can teach a kid to make reads....cant teach arm strength, or for the most part accuracy. Hardly any high school QBs actually make "reads". They have 1 receiver they look to on most occasions before the have to improvise.
I did say "to an extent". I've never seen a QB, well, a 5+ year starting QB that can't read defense. Example: Chad Pennington, not very accurate down the field, yet he has one of the highest completion % of any QB in the last 10 years.

You obviously haven't seen Newton play much, He has a cannon for an arm....Really just needs some good coaching to get his accuracy down and he'll be ready to go, Big strong guy like him can adapt to any system...Plus he is a serious threat when he needs to tuck the ball and run.

By "hasn't got the arm" I meant that he can't make the throws. I just see him as a project...which you basically just agreed with. I don't see the point in taking a JUCO QB who wasn't gonna cut it another SEC school and turning him into a project. Seems like a waste of time.

Recruiting is all about building relationships. In building relationships it’s all about earning trust and respect from the prospect and his parents. One of Camp Kiffin’s biggest surprises two weeks ago was late comer Chase Rettig. A strong armed quarterback from California, who had flight trouble getting to Knoxville.

Looking good for us.

He was suspended from Florida because of off the field issues not because he couldn't play. He was Tebow's back up and was a 5 star QB out of high school so I doubt he would have any issues playing in the SEC.

So Lamaison is rated higher than Scroggins according to this person. The one thing that puzzles me on Lamaison is that no one picked up on him before he went to Juco. I have read a few things about him on JCfootball and the posters there say he is a very accurate passer, very good a reading defenses, but can't scramble very well.

Yea, he broke it down very well. I don't know if he actually knows what he is talking about, but it sounds like he does...

I'm fully aware of the laptop issue. When he got the boot, Brantley had already passed him up on the depth chart (from what I've been told). The dude was brought in as a project...next Vince Young, if you will. Then John Brantley came along and suddenly the project was over. You can't tell me that a year or so at a JC has been beneficial enough to cause Newton to blossom into the QB everyone thought he would eventually be. I'm not buying it...sorry. Give me Scroggins, Lamaison, Rettig, Hendrix....but keep Newton...unless he wants to play some TE.

Well seeing as how nobody else want's him, I would tend to agree :eek:lol:

Or it could be He is a jewel in the scheme of things...Not every QB will play in college, It certainly doesn't hurt to have someone like that even if he isn't starting to be on the bench in case you need him....He was a 5* QB out of high school, He didn't get those stars because he doesn't know how to play the game....But then again, Our beloved Crompton was a 5* too....So you never know how things will turn out unless you give it a shot.

No doubt...right now we have 2 mediocre signal callers and baseball washout on the chart. Newton definately isn't going to hurt. Ideally though, he's not what we want...thats what I was saying. He'll do if that what it comes down to.

I believe retting is not getting attention is because he transferred schools and did not play last year. I have read(no links sorry) on places here and there throughout this spring/summer that he was supposed to blow up but when he transferred he only had sophmore year tape. But where he transferred is supposed to help him and I say by his 4th game he will be blowing up with schollys.

However, 10 injuries on the offensive side of the ball has been damaging to Rettig and La Salle’s season, and they are 1-7 on the campaign.

“I’m kind of out there thinking if I leave everything on the field, it’s a win in my book, and I can control myself and keep making all those passes and make all those reads, and even if players aren’t making plays, I’m still making progress,” Rettig explained. “Don’t get angry with the players. I can make them better by playing better myself.”

Despite La Salle’s struggles, Rettig has still caught the eye of many college recruiters. Every program in the Pac 10 is recruiting Rettig, and Notre Dame has jumped into the mix as well.

Through 8 games, Rettig has thrown for 1,180 yards with 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, and rushed for a team-high 376 yards and three more scores.

Rettig's name has been out there for a while and much longer than guys like Scroggins and hendrix...

Tom Brady had to send out highlight videos and got 3 or 4 offers late.

It seemed to have worked out pretty well for him.

Look at the offers that Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford had too.

I'm not saying this is the norm, but it's not unheard of that good players get lost in the shuffle.

Project or not he was battling it out with Blantley (also a 5 star) for the back up spot. He was not considered a scrub at the time. I don't really care if you're not buying it that is your opinion and you are entitled to it. He was rated a 5 star out of HS and Crompton was a high 4 but we all see how that is working out. The thing is with these guys these have the physical tools they just need what matters most and that is what's between their ears

what are you talking about? That's not a part of the recruiting forum. This is about watching film, making all the throws, rocket arms and 40 times. We don't care who can actually play football.

If you read the list he is referring to the cream of the crop of QBs in California to show that his name has been around a lot long than most think. Most know that Hendrix is from Ohio

Yeah, what was I thinking. I just forgot where I was at there for a minute. Thanks for reeling me back in.:)

It would make sense to me that the more of a circus and public spectacle/hype machine recruiting becomes, the more likely good players will be overlooked simply by not getting that early buzz.

Yes. Look at guys like Jeff Luc. He has to be a 4 year starter and 3 time All-American to live up to the hype. He's set up to fail.

Then guys like the Curry guy from Wake Forest and the LT from Baylor. One was a two star LB and the other a 1 or 2 star TE. Now they are rich NFL players.

Recruiting services are a joke. It's funny to see how many stars kids get when big programs offer

I think if Lane was to offer Rettig, he would commit. He has no offers, but alot of interest from schools. Lane better offer him before its to late.
