12 TN RB I'tavius Mathers

If Mathers were a Florida back you people would be creaming your pants over him

That works both ways. Personally, I think if people did a "blind tasting" so to speak with his film and a similar back from another state, they wouldn't be too impressed. But knowing he's from Tennessee blinds their perception of his ability.

And before anyone says anything, I realize I used the phrases "works both ways" and "blind tasting" in a response to a post with the phrase "creaming your pants". Thank you.

I like him better than Cross, and not because he is instate. He has more speed, more agile, and has a good frame to put on some weight.

Yeah, he's 6'0"

That's about the max height I like a guy at RB (but hey if they're Brandon Jacobsesque than no worries).

But he's listed as 6 foot 195 lbs. That kid could easily 30 lbs and be a 6'0" 230 lbs backer

This staff understands that building relationships with these kids pays off unexpected dividends later. Such is reality when dealing with 17-18 y/o's. I hope Coach Graham can get us in with this kid. Makes zero sense why he wouldn't listen to us, purely from a practical standpoint.

He has offers from Alabama, Notre Dame and South Carolina along with many others. He's in the top 250 national rankings... someone likes him.

I have seen this kid play in person he is the real deal. BHS plays in a very tough district and before his injury against Riverdale he was lighting people up. He has a lot of people in his ears telling him UT is not the place for him.My son goes to BHS from what I've heard his coach, father and the guidance counselor has tried to steer him away from here. I for one would love to have this kids here just doesn't look good.

i have heard the same... why would they really not want him to go there

I think he is go enough to start against NC State.

But I am admittedly biased.

For the good of the Big Orange Nation, I just want to see us patch up this "UT" problem in middle Tennessee. In particular, the Rutherford County six big schools...Riverdale, Oakland, Siegal, Blackman, Smyrna & Lavergne. We need to be pulling in 2 or 3 recruits from those schools each and every year.

Now that is middle tennessee bias. Two or 3 recruits from rutherford county is a stretch.

Ok, I am admittedly over selling it but that is where the players are in middle Tennessee. Sorry, but it is a sore spot with me. These coaches...Dooley, Kiffin...talk about building a fence around Tennessee. That is a joke! Let's start with something we can handle...maybe east and middle tennessee. Once we recover that ground, then work on west tennessee. They are doing ok in CHattanooga and Nashville. But they are missing bad on everything between those two cities..the area down around the Alabama and Mississipi borders.

Envy...local school (Vandy) is irrelevant? I bet the real issue is that UT "thinks it's too good" for these coaches players and rarely ever looks their way. This probably builds a lot of resentment over time.

When they do happen to have a recruit that gets national recognition, UT still isn't interested half the time.

With 9 state championships since 94 there has to be some talent in Rutherford county. I know that doesn't necessarily equate to college level but I would think 2 or 3 per year is not that far fetched.

Some Coaches are either Vandy or Bamer fans, and loathe UT. Never mind. That couldn't happen, right?

Dude! Vanderbilt ain't the problem. There aren't any Vanderbilt fans in middle Tennessee. The Tennessee Titans are the problem. We can get in our car, drive 3 1/2 hours to Knoxville, be disappointed and have to drive 3 1/2 hours home.

Or we can drive Nashville, be disappointed by the Titans and only have an hour drive home.

I honestly don't think the higher ups at UT have figured it out yet. Those empty seats you are seeing more and more of at Neyland...that is middle Tennessee choosing to not make that drive.

They are going to figure it out eventually. But they seem to be a little slow.

Anytime you have a borderline and above player from middle Tennessee, they need to have the bloodhounds on them. And wherever there are broken fences with the high school coaching staffs, mend those fences.

For the most part, the same approach somewhat applies to east tennessee

Now you may be right about that. There seems to be some resentment or something going on there. And yes, it has built up over time.

Back 30 years ago, we had walk-ons all over that team from middle tennessee. I was shocked to look at that roster and see only a bunch of east tennessee kids as the walk-ons. I don't know the details of how it happened but somehow we cut off half our roots. And then, like you say, when you do actually get a good player over here, we can't get him to go to Knoxville because of the past baggage.

It all depends on the year. In the high school class of
08 Rutherford county had several players who were worthy of a least a hard look at UT including two who committed (Wilks and Hughes). Then you also have years like this year where there is only one guy UT would even think about offering.

Great post, I live in middle tn and me and fellow vol fans in the area refuse to make a 4 hour trip there and back to be dissapointed. The Titans have been more entertaining at 7-5 then the vols came close to being. That being said, there is a big difference I bleed orange and love college football oppose to the nfl. But people from middle will not pay the gas or the hotel fee's in order to watch a subpar team.

Nothing but gibberish. If this guy is not considering a visit and/or a possible commit to the Vols... let this stupid thread die.

We need a beast at running back. It would really matter if we got Mathers!

GO VOLS!!
