12 TN RB I'tavius Mathers

Alright I have no idea if this is true or not but this is what I am being told. I went back thru the thread and didn't see it mentioned. It could shed some light on why this is happening.

Ronnie Pillow(former vol rb) has a close connection to Mathers.

RP didn't have a great experience as a Vol and had pushed Mathers away from knoxville.

JayG and RP were teammates and great friends thus changing RPs opinion.

Anybody know if any of that is true?

My son goes to BHS and has a class with Mathers we may be able to get some info from him. All the talk in the stands lead back to the HC, guidance counselor and him father steering him away from UT.

Is Rubio still with the program? I thought he specialized with these kind of situations.

Are we talking about the same Lattimore? You know, the guy who rushed for over 2,000 yards as an underclassman? Lattimore will most likely be down next year. But he will still start. The fact that he could have a down year could even play in our favor as it increases the chance that Lattimore stays for his Senior season, meaning Mathers would have virtually no chance of starting until he is a Junior. He could see touches right away at Tennessee.

With his injury happening so late in the season I think Mathers could see a lot of playing time he's that good

I don't make judgments about kids talent or character very often on here but I am going to say something now that I am guessing won't be very popular.

With what I know about Mathers' Character and what I have read about Davis and all that drama, I want Mathers as a member of this class and call it a day for RBs.

Mathers from all accounts is a first class kid and maybe not the talent of Davis but I am stating now that Mathers is my choice.

He grew up an Auburn fan, just like all of us grew up UT fans. It's not necessarily people steering him away, he's just never been a fan. It's understandable.

Best post in this thread. Would love to have Mathers in this class.

I dont that why i said I can have my son ask. He's talked to him about being a Vol once and Mathers shrugged it off.

I will dig some more tomorrow but I very easily could be wrong about the relationship. I hope I am not because the last thing I want is to come on here and spread an untruth. Regardless I hope we make the kid a Vol!

Thanks for your answer. Guess my question had the unintended consequence of raising character issues.
Who's character? I'm not saying I have a man on the inside and the last this I want to do is put my kid in the middle of a recruiting war.I'm gunna ask my son to ask Mathers about where he wants to go or maybe where he is at in the recruitment process.

He's pretty open about his commitment, from what I've heard. That might have changed, though.

Sorry. I was being obscure. Did not mean to draw you in. I like Mathers based on this thread. Glad his recruitment is gaining some momentum. Maybe I am crazy but I like Mahters and Brown vs. a Pender or Davis.

Edit: The answer to the riddle is that I was making a reference to the recruitment of Nukeese.

One wouldn't think that one would finde bias against UT from guidance counselors in state. That's really what I was driving at. It just ain't right.

Not sure about the guidance counselors (never went to see them), but one of the Asst. Principals is a HUGE 'Bama, so I could easily see him saying things to Mathers. I don't know if he has.

Apparently you are not crazy at all, and most posters in this thread seem to agree with you. For myself, I think Brown can help us most on defense, but I would rather have Pender or Davis than Mathers (and I am from Murfreesboro). Mathers is very good but both Pender and Davis seem better on film to me.

I will go with whoever the staff wants, and it may be instructive that Mathers is the first that Graham went to see here, so I could certainly be wrong.

I would much rather have Mathers. Dude is a stud, I think he would put up similar numbers if he played in Florida. Jmo though.

IMO, he runs with much more power than Marlin. When I saw him in the middle of the season, I kept thinking his running style reminded me a lot of Gerald Riggs, Jr. when he played at Red Bank HS. Strong legs, dragging people downfield with him and faster than everyone else even though he runs real smooth. I'm telling you, he is the type of back we are desperately needing.

I am asking around today. If RP is in his ear that's why we are all of sudden in this thing.

Man, if we can somehow pull Mathers back in, I will be doing my Carlton dance!
