'14 GA S Cortez McDowell (UT Signee 2/5/14)

What was the apology?

From the AJC-

On Tuesday night, the soft-spoken McDowell reached out to the media to apologize for his comments:

"Georgia is a good school, but it's just not the school for me. It's hard to break the news to some in-state fans that sometimes an in-state school is not the best fit for a kid.

"I'm trying to tell Georgia fans to please don't take my comments the wrong way. Tennessee was just a better fit for me. Georgia is a good school, and they get good players, too."

"I apologize to all Georgia fans if I rubbed them the wrong way. I don't want to create any tensions between myself and Georgia fans and Georgia the school. I send out my sincere apologies to them."

Good, clean apology. Glad he did that. Prove it all on the field

C'mon up, Cortez. We've got your back. You made the right choice.

No understating this, it's a HUGE commitment for a variety of reason.

One, he is one of the consensus top safeties in the nation. Two, I thought for sure McDowell would end up at Auburn. Especially with a couple of his HS coaches pushing him that way & almost committing to us then backing off to only visit Auburn a few times. Third, he just got done visiting UGA for Dawg Night & they have supposedly made a late push for him.

Randolph (rSo), McNeil (SO), Reeves-Maybin (FR), Johnson (FR), Kelly ('14), & McDowell ('14). That's one heck of a depth chart at Safety.

No doubt that is great depth. Should I be worried abou speed though? Who is the fastest out if that bunch? Kelly or JRM? I just want a safety who can come within 10 yards of touching the next Florida Gator scat back running an uncontested TD off a screen play...

Great tacklers make a difference...both Cortez and TK fit that category

I don't think some of our current players were bad tacklers in high school. McNeil lit some kids up in HS. For whatever reason it has looked like or guys un-learned how to tackle once they got here.

Great get for the Vols. He's a heck of a player and a guy UGA wanted. He should be able to contribute early at UT. Congrats.

As to his comments, I think he's pretty far off base. I also don't think he came up with that on his own, but it is what it is. Oftentimes, you hear more about some programs "discipline problems" because they are quicker and harsher in disciplining their players. I'll leave it at that.

I'm impressed that he took it upon himself to apologize. I wasn't personally offended, but a lot of UGA fans were.

Way to slide in that little discipline part about how UGA takes care of issues immediately. That's funny.

This was also more in reference to UGA's drug test policy. One failed test equals suspension. UGA is pretty much the only school that does that.

This is my last post on the subject. Congrats on Cortez.

Bama #2 academically in the SEC? hmmmm

At least Saban thinks so. And if Saban says it, it must be so. Especially if you are majoring in underwater basket weaving in a state where people living in trailer parks take shelter in their basements in the event of a tornado. And if a recruit can change a light bulb, he gets 3 credit hours for it.

"McDowell is a versatile playmaker at the safety position who I could see playing safety or maybe even sliding up to linebacker if depth necessitates. On his high school squad he's had some big games at wide receiver, so you know he's got a nose for the ball when he's in the secondary.

More importantly for the Tennessee staff, they reached into Georgia and were able to snag a commitment from a guy that a lot of other schools really wanted.

As the program continues to try to get back to where it was, guys like McDowell will be very important."

Kelly and McDowell are both faster than JRM. I don't think we'll have to worry about speed with those two. Kelly especially has great range and closing speed on the back end.

Don't sleep on McNeil though. That guy has got a ton of potential. He got thrown into the dogs as a true freshman last year while playing in a terrible scheme under a terrible DC. I fully expect him to be a very good safety for us. He's very talented.
