'15 TN DE Dylan Jackson (former UT commit)

Per Woody Wommack, Stanford is more of a threat to steal Jackson than LSU. LSU is wanting 6 DL in this class, so they are on the hunt. LSU is using the Jashon Robertson deal as an example to help them.

So, John Chavis is recruiting against us by saying we might convert a DL to the OL? Of course, we did that all the time when he was here and it was to the benefit of that player's career. See Charles McRae.

I believe he was DL/LB coach when McRae converted...he wasn't DC until 95. Doug Matthews made that call. A lot of those type conversions stopped under his watch... His preference is to take corners and move them to safety...safeties to LBs...etc.

In other words, Chavis wants to take Dylan and convert him from a DE to a DT.

Chavis made a living out of converting RB's to LB. Al Wilson (also played LB), Eric Westmoreland, Dominique Stevenson, and Eddie Moore. Of course they all probably played defense, too, but several were recognized more on the offensive side.

Happens less and less now a days. Kids are more specialized now coming out of HS. You're not going to sell top caliber offensive players on moving over to defense and HOPING it works out. Same with moving defensive guys to offense. Unless they are widely considered to be playing the wrong position in HS, they will usually plan on sticking in college at their position. A DE moving to DT or an OG moving to OT is position changes that would still be very common.

Yea, that was just in response to the discussion about position changes. Doesn't happen as much anymore. However, many of the good high school athletes play offense regardless of their primary position to have the ball in their hands. I think Al Wilson actually played snaps at QB.

Will be very interesting to see how Jackson develops over the next few years & how his skills transition to the college football game.

Jackson is a versatile athlete & disciplined football player and I hope he has a bright future at UT.

It seems many of the more recent D1 signees coming out of MHS have had some trouble adjusting to the college game and sustaining success. Not all, but some.

Hopefully Jackson sticks with UT and turns into a great player for the Vols.

Most big time prospects are still playing both ways nowadays. If Jackson played at 95% of the other schools in this state he would be.

I thought Al played RB/Safety in HS.

You are correct, he played S in HS at about 210 pounds, but he was also a good RB. Had over 1,000 yards his Sr year. Everyone wanted him as a defensive player

Al went to the same high school I played football at, although long before Al did. I played for the Jackson High Golden Bears, but the school was consolidated with Merry High in '71 and became the Jackson Central-Merry Cougars.

I thought I remembered that, too. I actually saw him play once at my high school when I was there. Now, I know Wikipedia is not a true source, but I do use it as a "source" of information. I stated that he played LB because it says that. I clearly remember him playing alot on offense. My guess is that he played a hybrid S/LB position anyway and probably played close to the line of scrimmage considering that most high schools are more run oriented. JMO.

Wilson played at LB (163 tackles) and RB as a senior at Central-Merry. He was listed in most recruiting publications as a safety prospect due to his speed (and probably his height as well), and we recruited him to be a strong safety. But after Chavis saw his lack of coverage skills, Wilson joined the LB corps.

To be honest....if we could somehow pull DeAndre Walker and Phillips, I hope we keep Jackson and look at moving him to TE like we did with Jason Witten. He's the perfect size for it, and could be a dominant one

LSU still is seeking defensive ends, and the Tigers apparently are pretty high on Jackson. I wouldn't say there's any reason for UT fans to worry much about him right now, but the Vols will have to continue recruiting him, especially if they add another defensive end between now and signing day.

Nothing has changed with Jackson. Tennesssee still wants him, and the Vols weren't upset with him for taking visits to other schools.
