'15 TX QB Quinten Dormady (UT Commit 6/9/14)

I don't think Worley was right for our style offense. The pocket protection made less difference than worleys immobility. Dobbs had the same offensive line but he made it work. CBJ never even tried to organize around Worleys strengths. He pushed him right into the zone read and it was a square peg round hole situation. So again back to my original question was simply is QD the kind of QB that can make the offense work like dobbs is doing?

I don't get involved in recruit threads very often, but I'll offer $0.02 into the situation.

Worley was not a fit for this offense, but it also seemed like nobody ever took the time to try to train him up for the offense either. Like your round peg in a square hole analogy, it appeared the staff never tried to push him into being a more mobile QB. Or they did and Worley just didn't get it or didn't want to do it.

But in watching QD's Hudl film and others, he does seem like he is able to get outside the pocket and make plays with his feet. He appears more comfortable dropping back to pass, but has that ability to roll out and scramble when he needs to. Obviously there's a huge difference in HS and college ball so time will tell whether or not he can perform. But there's also the point they have him from a freshman where they can adapt him to the offense. He's not a junior like Worley was where he was fairly set in his ways. They can train him up at this point to being a more mobile QB. And with a redshirt year (maybe) and his EE gets that much more time to learn how to operate under the scheme.

Just some observations.

Pretty widely know we were trying to redshirt Dobbs and Worley was better than Peterman.

So I think CBJ does know his own system.

I understand that. So was it worth it to burn dobbs' redshirt? If so should he have burned it earlier in the season to have given dobbs even more time to develop? At the end of the day what would have been better for the program?

Dobbs would have never saw the field if Worley stayed healthy regardless of how this season went. Better? Hell IDK, I think going to a bowl game was important for this program, I think long term another year of eligibility for Dobbs and more weapons would have been better for the player and the program. I think that's what Butch was looking at in the big picture. Of course I'm just guessing like most of the fans are.

On your question yeah Dormady is a much more athletic guy for a kid his size. He posted an impressive shuttle time and has a decent 40 time. I think people are confusing what Jones wants out of his offense. Ideally you're not going to see a high percentage of QB runs anyways.

Worley would have been a better QB this year than Dobbs if he had time to throw the ball. Worley was accurate as hell in the games where he was healthy and had at least a moment to deliver the ball. Dobbs covers up a lot of offensive deficiencies though and was a much better fit for our offense. The staff was never going to make Worley into an athletic running QB; it just isn't who he is.

This. As long as QD can run the offense efficiently without turnovers he can play QB for CBJ. The only reason Dobbs runs so much is that he's not a consistent downfield passer yet.

The part I was missing was the mobility, which is a must for our offensive style. Things I read about him has him represented as more of a pro style great arm but without great mobility. I think that a true threat of a run from a QB is a must have for us as our offense is not geared around drop back passing. So apparently QD, in addition to the arm strength, is a true run threat is that correct?

I do not think we will really have a good idea of what this offense of scheme is capable of until we have a combination of at least a better than average offense of line as well as a decent quarterback. When the Tennessee had a good offense of line,The quarterback position was not up to the task. Then when the quarterback situation got better, the offense of line was not up to the task. Put those two pieces together and I think we will then get a chance to see what this whole scheme will look like.

You are so into yourself that you don't even get it...let me break it down for ya fella.

1. I did not know how mobile QD is. Worley doesnt have great mobility. He didn't work in CBJ system because of the limited mobility. So I was simply asking about QD's mobility. Having mobility seems to be a must for CBJs offense to function.

2. Was CBJ playing for this year or next? Everybody says trust butch (which I do completely). But it looked like he would've stuck with Worley the entire season had he not gotten injured and was forced to burn the redshirt. We may not have gone to or won a bowl if Worley stayed the starter. So was he making the right call for this year by keeping Worley in? You agree burning dobbs' redshirt got us a bowl win. So do you think staying with Worley so long was the right call? If so you are contradicting yourself.

Are you related to Tux? Or at the very least, do you eat dinner at Tux's table?

to the people touting dobbs starting earlier in the season, what happens when he gets hurt against the meat of the schedule? 42 sacks on worley would probably have been 15-20 sacks on Dobbs, plus how ever many hits he takes while running. we may have started Dobbs, but with our O line I doubt any QB was finishing the season as the starter.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned. But the pic of QD yesterday showed him wearing #12, which is the same number Peterman wears. I saw earlier that it was confirmed Peterman is enrolled in grad classes which means he didnt transfer. Obviously a number swap easily explains this away but I hadnt heard anything. Does anybody have any info regarding this?

I believe that Peterman, if he stays, could be a Grad Asst or some other type of position with the football team and no longer count towards the 85. He would be an excellent coach someday, IMO.

If Dobbs had started earlier in the season their is no guarantee that he would have had the success he had later on. There were several reports from the beginning of the season, until he was named starter, that he was working hard and improving as the season went forward. While he had some experience from last year keep in mind that he was a true sophomore this year. If he continues to improve into next season we will have a very fine QB. All 3 QB's coming in "fit" the system so to speak. Why would CBJ even consider recruiting or taking a commit from one that did not fit it? Worley was here when he got here, he does not fit it and that is no ones fault. Worley wanted to stay and quite frankly he was the best we had at the time. CBJ and Worley made the best of it. It befuddles my mind why someone would think CBJ would recruit a QB that is not going to fit in the system. As mentioned previously look at QD's shuttle and compare to Dobbs or anyone else you want to. He is athletic and mobile and therefore he fits. If he can move out of harms way and get the ball down field that is all he needs to do. He has good enough mobility to get those other yards as needed. He does not have to be a Dobbs that might run for 25 to 40 yards 5 or 6 times a season. He will make up for that in other ways.

I never cease to be amazed at the number of posters talking about how a particular type QB "is a must for our offensive style". I feel reasonably certain the coaches know what type QB they want and what skill sets. I also feel reasonably certain if they recruit and accept the commitment of a particular QB, then that QB probably has the skill set they want "for our offense".
I think coaches telling us there was no one QB type for this system and then dressing Worley in a track suit to get broad sided as he feigned the run option is what fuels that fire. They spoke out of their ass (IMO) about fitting a pocket passer to this offense when in reality it was the inverse.

There have been several great NFL quaterbacks that were recruited in college to play a different position and that were told by some great college coaches they would be better at a different position. Jim Kelly of the BB comes to mind. Don't count the kid out. He may surprise you.

Yea but you can't compare Kelly to Jennings. I can see Jennings being like a Hines Ward type player. Could play QB like Hines did in some games but overall his NFL potential is at a different position. We have Dormady and now Jones plus Kendall who are all true QB's and will only play QB. Jennings is a freakist athlete that can play a different position and be elite at the other losition, like safety. Right now I don't see him being more than a decent QB. Of course QB is the hardest position to judge going from HS to College.
