This doesn't explain/excuse the lack of communication, and in fact, it only makes it all the more puzzling, but I have wondered all along how Tennessee's coaches see Chase fitting in at Tennessee.
At 6-3, 238, with his receiving prowess and admitted weakness in the blocking aspect, is he not basically a "big" WR? Perhaps they feel he isn't athletic enough to play WR at the SEC level and not big enough or a good enough blocker to play TE in their system. From the time of his commitment, he seemed like a tweener to me for this system. That isn't a knock on Chase. He just didn't seem to fit our TE "profile".
Again, those developing questions don't excuse the lack of communication, and like I said, it makes it even stranger to not be communicating those concerns unless they just wanted to keep him on the line until they find a replacement (a sadly harsh but very real reality every year).
