2012 Silly Season Discussion

Jack has said that if Carl leaves that he will promote from in house. So Stenhouse or Bayne depending on who sponsorship wants. Bayne is just being "Borrowed" for the 21 car from what I understand. The Wood Brothers are getting everything from Rousch. Car, engine, driver, pit crew...... Pretty much the 5th car he got rid of.

I read that it's looking like Patrick will run a full Nationwide schedule for JR and a partial Cup schedule with Stewart and will still enter the Indy 500.

But the ball just rolls down hill. Will Home Depot stick with Logano/Gibbs. Is Bowyer and Montoya, and Newman(and prob a few others) are free to sign elsewhere.

I think pretty much everyone re-signs where they are now. The only interesting thing at this point is what happens to Red Bull Racing and Vickers.

If Bowyer was smart, he'd leave RCR. It's obvious Harvick will demand the greatest stuff and the Dillon's are three or four years away from taking over a cup ride. It's not an immediate problem, but I don't see Clint ending his career for Richard.

I can see Austin running a full Nationwide schedule and limited Cup schedule in 2012 in preparation to take over the 31 in 2013. Ty will probably end up in the 3 truck for at least one full season to see if he can make the ARCA to NASCAR transition successfully, which I believe he can.

Not suprised. Bowyer could announce this weekend at Atl. I'm guessing Montoya and Newman stay where they are.

I was talking to an iRacing network buddy (a NASCAR Cup spotter) the other day. I haven't saw it reported online about the $$$ amount but he was complaining about Roush/Edwards and their sponsorship deal. Was saying that many teams can run with a $20 million primary sponsor budget and run competitively. Next year Edwards will likely have this laundry list of sponsors:

Fastenal - new deal
Subway
Aflac
Scotts
Kelloggs
UPS

He was basically saying that Roush next year could get upwards of $50 million in sponsorship JUST for Edwards with all of these sponsors. I'm not blaming sponsors for wanting to jump on a good thing but its not good for the sport for Edwards to have all of these sponsorships tied up and so many teams looking for anything they can get. 2-3 million from, say Scotts, could probably get them 10 races on some cars. Next year we are looking at more start and parkers in Cup with the possible dissolution of Red Bull and then the 6 car for Roush not having a sponsor now either.

I'm not trying to single out Edwards but look at how many former primary sponsors will all likely be sharing spots on his car next year.

sponsors are the reason there is racing. they can hitch their wagon to whomever they please.

Sponsors have figured out how to cut their expenses by time sharing. Edwards isn't alone in this.

Sponsors sign up and pony up the bucks for one reason, exposure. They are concerned with how many "views" they get. There is a mini-industry that keeps track of how many times sponsor's name are seen. They go where they get the most bang for the buck.

I'm not saying I have a good alternative for this situation but it is a little concerning......

There may be no 6 car next year with UPS probably going to Edwards

Roush will run Kenseth in a plain white car if he has to but they don't have a sponsor

Red Bull leaving the sport places both of those cars likely to have the points gobbled up by guys right outside of the Top 35 at the end of the year. I could see Stewart Haas getting points for one of these cars just to make sure Danica is guaranteed a spot in the Daytona 500.

As of right now Bowyer seems to have a sponsor and will likely go to Petty with 5 Hour Energy. Childress will just shut down the 33 team but I guess this would be considered a 1 for 1 swap.

Bass Pro likely to move to Stewart Haas as an additional sponsor to Newman and Stewart. No promises for Ganassi that McMurray retains McDonalds either and also a possibility that Montoya loses Target.

I know some of it is a product of the economy in general but I'm afraid that next year in Cup, Nationwide, and Trucks there are even less "competitive" cars on the track in each series due to overall lack of sponsorship.

Bottom line is NASCAR has peaked. It's never going to be as popular as it was.

As for the competition, the same guys are still going to win races regardless of who is on their car.

Maybe if the 6 wants to attract sponsors they can try winning?

Cup racing is about as competitive as it has ever been with more cars capable of winning as I remember. There have been five first time winners too. I can see as many as twenty-two potential winners.
