2013-14 Schedule

Thought some might find this interesting, Bruce Pearl played a D2 team in the regular season while at Tennessee. Don't seem to remember people complaining too much back then about it.

The only complaints that I remember during the Pearl era is that some years it looked to difficult going into the season.

It was not a scheduled game by Pearl. We played Ark. Mont. as part of a early season tourny. Stub Hub Legends Classic. They were the first round opponent played in TBA. Second round was WV in the semis.

Johnny already covered it, but yes, that was not a scheduled game, but rather a game we played as part of an early season tournament.

Maybe I'm mistaken but weren't people just complaining because Martin accepted playing The Citadel as part of the B4A?

I'm not sure who has been complaining, or what they've been complaining about, but if the Citadel game is part of the B4A, then Martin has no control over it, and any complaining would be unwarranted.

Tusculum appears to be the bone of contention. CCM scheduled that one on his own. Citadel is D-1, aren't they? Albeit an awful team.

I agree, was just pointing out that we had played a D2 team in the past.

I don't have an issue with scheduling tusculum, but I can understand the frustration that season ticket holders may have.

That's just part of the risk of purchasing season tickets though, wasn't it UK recently that didn't have marquee home games? They had moved them to neutral sites, or fell on road games for that particular year, I remember recently their home slate not being great OOC.

Now, I will say again, because I don't think it can be stressed enough on this topic...the AD thought we had a home and home with Michigan State. When that fell through they were left kind of scrambling to add some teams to fill the schedule. Better to add tusculum than Presbyterian who would kill you with the RPI.

For the record, I wasn't necessarily complaining about CCM. I just wished we didn't play teams like the Citadel. I know we have to play games like that most years. But the RPI is messed up, and teams like that hurt us last year.

Well of course being forced to play a D2 team as part of a tourney, and scheduling one are two different things. Your original comment made it sound as though you believed Pearl scheduled a D2 opponent, and that is the disconnect. He had no choice, as they were scheduled by the tourney execs.

To be clear, I have little problem with it, especially being a local team like Tusculum. My only problem is the game doesn't count toward your win total. Just like when we played Chaminade (another D2 team) in the Maui Invitational a couple years ago in CCM's first season.

I thought last year when they were showing the teams like SDSU and Boise St. It included their win against D2 teams? I thought that was the hoopla about it and being a loophole?

Unless the rule changed last year, I remember discussions during the 2011-12 season when we made a run down the stretch where we had to basically deduct a win from our record because wins against D2 teams don't count.

RPIFORECAST and ESPN both included the D2 wins in their win total last year for the MWC teams

It's the RPI that doesn't count the wins. Sorry for not being clear about that. When I say they don't count, what I mean is they don't count towards your RPI win total.

Well the RPI list I looked at for 2011-12 listed Tennessee with 18 wins, though with the Chaminade win, we had 19. ESPN's BPI formula also credited us with 18 wins.

Actually seeing 17 wins in the RPI now. Not sure what to make of it honestly. I'm more confused than when we started.

Right, it doesn't count for or against the RPI, which is the good thing. If you play a team like Presbyterian, especially at home, it hurts your RPI even if you win by 50. By playing a D2 team you still get a win added to your win total, but your RPI isn't effected at all.

Sorry. Looking back, I didn't make that very clear.
