2024 Transfer Portal Thread

I've said he's the best coach we've ever had. Doesn't mean we can't have an honest conversation that there really isn't a backup plan if we miss on Chaz. I still want the kid, but based on what has been reported, he lied to our staff about how he would handle this. Now, if he picks elsewhere, we scramble for someone else to take that spot. Will we get someone? Probably. Will they be of the same quality? Probably not. Again, we wanted Yuri Collins. We got Tyreke Key. I saw Key as settling, not really a backup plan. But hell, this could all be for naught. Chaz could still pick us. And if he doesn't, it's far more of an indictment on his character than it is our staff's. They took a kid at his word. Unfortunately, a lot of staffs get screwed that way.
Several folks on here have also stated Lanier lied and has poor character for doing so. I don’t understand this narrative. He played at a low budget program and didn’t blossom until his last season. Appears he had been a long time Vol fan and liked the idea of playing here. I read on here that Barnes started talking to him around December/January IIRC. We all know there are no guarantees in recruiting and that NIL dollars have gone a bit crazy lately. Lanier had no way to anticipate other programs reaching out to him with huge NIL offers. I don’t think it’s fair to call him a lier or attack his character because the climate changed. He’s entitled to explore all opportunities and if someone makes him an offer that’s simply too much money to turn down, then that doesn’t make him a bad person nor a liar. Sort of hard to believe a coach making over $5million a year would begrudge a player maximizing his value in his one season of opportunity. JMO, TIFWIW, AARP

Other than a commitment, the best news I could hear is that Mamma Lanier has travelled from Nashville to Knoxville today. UT couldn't pay, which would make it even better news.
Couldn’t Spyre pay for anything they want since they are outside of the NCAA’s jurisdiction?

If this guy is impressed by a trip to Jeff Ruby’s with an adult male wearing white skinny jeans we didn’t want him anyways.

It does not make him a bad person. But if he told the staff he'd avoid hiring an agent and shopping himself, then did just that, that's the definition of a liar. But I don't think lying automatically makes him a "bad guy".

I respect everyone’s right to have an opinion. Just seems like folks are viewing him as a 40 year old who’s been through this before such that he knows the process. Reality is the process is in flux such that nobody really knows what’s coming based on everything we read on VN. Anyway, hope he ends up a Vol but if not I wish him well as he seems like a solid young man from a good family.
