2024 WNBA Discussion Thread

The reason Sydney Colson is still in the W is the same reason Rennia Davis is not. One player makes people laugh and, apparently, that's extremely important. The other, though talented, is quiet and keeps to herself and that, apparently, makes her easier to cut at roster-trimming time.

Syd Colson is valuable because she's efficient with her minutes, creates defensive opportunities every time she's on the floor, and gives 100% energy and effort when she does actually get the minutes. Now is that enough to stay on any other roster, probably not, but I could see why Becky would value someone who brings that kind of energy to both the locker room and basketball court

To be fair, the Aces won two championships with that group, so there are probably lots of people who would have blown a gasket if, before this season, Hammon had changed what had been a winning roster. Now that that roster is broke, they've now got good reason to fix it.

As for the Liberty, I was just thinking it's hard to believe they've never won a championship. They've been runners-up, but never champions. It certainly looks like this is their year.
They have solid foundation with Wilson, Plum, and Young. A healthy Candace would have been that missing X factor. They need to find a PG to work with Grey and probably a power forward to complement Wilson --much like the Stewart and Jones combo.

Hammon already said they're shaking things up. Disappointed in Nikki Fargis for not bringing more foresite to the roster. Should have seen that the core is aging. They did other things that seem arrogant in hindsight; not only keeping Colson for clicks but using their draft on Kate Martin for a mascot and a feel good story. And keeping her while quality players were without a spot.

Some have blamed participation in the Olympics as a drag on the Aces. Except that the Lib also had players and coaches in the Olympics, and the Aces had already lost a record number of games before the break. Becky also complained that the Lib and others built their teams to beat the Aces. Yes, of course they did. Aces did not build their team to beat the contenders. They stood pat.

I don't know. Fargas trusted her much-vaunted head coach. Even Gregg Popovich believed she was a brilliant coach and motivator. I think Nikki would have created a lot of tension if she started pulling rank on roster decisions before it became painfully clear that while she's a good coach, Hammon is capable of making errors in judgement. I suspect Nikki will be making some changes herself now.

Lynx putting on a clinic. What a beautiful offense. Courtney Williams is playing out of her mind, by far the real Point Gawd of these playoffs. Lynx vs Liberty, and Williams vs Sabrina is going to make a very good final. They've been the best teams all year.

Courtney Williams and Phee are what I hope Paige and Rickea will be in a couple of years.

Only problem I see there is they don’t have Caitlin.

“The Indiana Fever averaged 17,036 fans per game in the 2024 WNBA season, setting a new league record. This was a significant increase from the previous season, when the Fever averaged only 4,067 fans per game.” - Google AI

I think WNBA needs to let Caitlin play as a complete free agent. They would assign her to whatever team is on national television (which might necessitate private jet service to three different games sites on a given Saturday or Sunday) and then rotate her across playoff teams based on arena size and ratings potential . She would wind up playing about 150 games per season and would obliterate all the records (further increasing her draw). Then I would extend her to women's golf. She is already doing that part-time!

At some point, we need to look at cloning options because having only one Caitlin is limiting revenue. Cloned Caitlins could then move into women's tennis, soccer, women's hockey and MMA cage fighting.

They didn’t have Angel Reese, whenever they move the game and don’t limit the tickets she fills up the Arena, and that’s without them even promoting the game.

Even with that, people in Chicago don’t come out to the games for some reason, people say it’s the traffic but who knows. Even when Indiana came to town they didn’t fill to capacity in a small Arena. Reese had bigger numbers on the road when they would open the Arena and not limit the tickets.

😂🤣

Well I'll tell ya, I've been following women's basketball for a long, long time, and I sure haven't seen anything or anyone even remotely close to whatever it is that made people go nutty over Clark. She brought out both extremes of fan behavior in a way I don't know if we'll ever see again. It's surreal.

W attendance, outside the Clark stans, is just hard to figure. Really sad for the Lynx, one of the best, most fun to watch, most likeable teams with the most likeable superstar in the league. Maybe fans just thrive on controversy. and the Lynx have none of that.

But how to explain the Sparks, 5th in the league, averaging a respectable 10K a game with only 8 wins? That's up from 7,500 last year. And within a few hundred of the 3rd place Aces, the 2x defending champs. Makes no sense.

Got give her credit, she lived up to the hype, after a bit of a slow start. Most experts are ranking her rookie season as next best after Candace's and when you compare their numbers, you can make a case it is dead heat between them.

It will be interesting to see if the Clark-Mania carries over to season 2.

I will be watching the draft with keen interest next year. Wonder how involved Clark will be in talent acquisition? I mean, isn’t she the LeBron of the W?

No looks,,pocket passes, one-hand passes,,,hook-passes,,Drop-passes....I have been waiting for this for what seems all my life....NO, not for CC, but for permission for girls/women to play the game boys have been playing for years.

What CC is doing is not new,,,permission to do so at will,,IS!

This is one thing that has hampered the growth of the womens game,,,no eletrifying passes, out of range gunning, etc. I watched in agony as any time a female didn't make a two-hand pass they got benched, and I got mad!

I do hope no one puts a cap on her game.

Michael Jordan raised the game above the rim
Pistol Pete and Magic opened the door to theatrical passing
Now its in CC's hands to lead women's BB into the next phase

She’s nowhere near Candace Parker and not even Tamika Catchings.

I'm surprised I have no memory of Natalie Nakase from her years playing at UCLA. I know I really only seriously followed Stanford during that time, but I'd have thought a rare Japanese name would have stood out in my brain.

Hard to believe I can never have heard of her and now she's the head coach of the new WNBA team! I guess I pay zero attention to assistant coaches. 😐 Anyway, good for Nakase. I hope the Valkyries kick it off with a great season.

Fair is fair. Just because way too many undervalued Angel that is no reason to deny what Clark did accomplish.

Statistically, their numbers are pretty close, with some differences for position (e.g. Candace with more rebounds and Clark with more assists). Candace made the Sparks better and Clark did the same for the Fever.

I think we can all agree, it is really good change the W has moved away from those oversized uniforms. I am not sure how CP3 played in that tent. ClarkevCandace.jpg

I’m talking about game and not just stats, a player with the ball 90% of the time and a team screening and trying to get them open all game is easier to pad stats. Candace And Tamika do what needs to be done to win, they have won at every level so there’s no comparison. That’s like looking at Russell Westbrook stats and comparing them to Jordan, one player chase stats while the other gets the stats but is a winner.

What's funny is that as I watched them play in those at the time it didn't seem weird at all. My how things change.
