8th in Recruiting in the SEC for 24...

Apples and oranges 28 vs 20. We're higher because of the average and our average is higher because we have less. If we took 8 more they wouldn't be 5 stars and most would be 3 so our average would drop. We still hit on some really good talent
In this era, is it good business to take a chance on that next 8 of mostly 3* or get those next 8 from the portal?

minus the obvious fact that nil has balanced the 5 star landscape and the differences between 3-18 are negligible beyond specific needs

We have some good players and pieces... But compared to the rest it's not that great... Need to be top 4 year in and year out to get elite to compete with the elite

This does not bode well for Heupel having a cool seat in year 5 of his being on The Hill.

The bottom line on roster management (recruiting and transfers) is this:

This staff and our NIL collective are not getting the job done at a level that is going to allow us to compete for championships unless we get really lucky sometime and find lightning in a bottle. At the level we are recruiting (both high school and transfers), our program has a ceiling of 8-10 wins, and a floor of 5-7 wins. That is not championship level, that is merely mediocre or slightly better. Tennessee fans should find that unacceptable and demand more.
So how would you make things better?

if Nico is who we think he is with heup it won’t matter we will be just fine… small sample size but I’ve seen all I needed to see he has that rare ability to feel pressure and turn negative plays into positive… heup and hazle will dial up the right play 75% of time… it’s the other 25% that joe couldn’t overcome and hendon could… recruiting is plenty good enough to win at a high level y’all are so dramatic…

Eighth in the SEC isn’t good enough to compete with Georgia and Alabama. You can do that if you kill it in the portal like Ole Miss is doing. Kiffin has the portal thing figured out. He has completely over hauled his defense in the portal. Walter Nolen is the next big portal get for Ole Miss. UT could finish 14-20th in recruiting if CJH could get the big fish in the portal every year. So far, our portal haul and recruiting efforts are lagging behind big time.

Something I found mind blowing. According to 247, Georgia only has 5 out of the top 50 in state recruits committed this year.

I love the people who say ratings don't really matter. They're the same people who'd be dancing on the tables if we had a top 5 class. We'll see how we finish after signing day, but we need to be better than where we're sitting now.
It's like when a big recruit we want commits to another school....We didn't want him anyway....he wasn't that good.....he was overrated....we have bigger fish on the line...etc...etc.

I'll not hold my breath waiting on championships recruiting 8th in the SEC. JMO

Let me ask you this. Say we were to ended up #4 in recruiting overall this year. Would you be expecting a championship based on that?

Currently we have the #1 Portal class by player average IJS
Yes ... but this forum has tunnel vision when it comes to interpreting the 247 Sports football recruiting data. The entire focus is on the numerical rankings, with no considerations given to player rating averages or to the number of commitments each school has.

I honestly do believe that some of these posters think Oklahoma has a superior list of players committed .... when in fact, it has everything to do with quantity. Oklahoma is #8 in the 247 Class of 2024 team rankings. Tennessee is #14. That must mean Oklahoma's class is much better, right?

No considerations are ever allowed for the fact that Oklahoma has 28 commitments, while Tennessee has only 20 ... or for the fact that Tennessee's player ratings average is higher than Oklahoma's. In the minds of simple people with tunnel vision, a list is a list .... and there is only one way to interpret any list.

Yeah, forgot about the TE---On3 has him as the 7th best TE in the portal.
On3 isn’t exactly spot on with their rankings of portal players. The star system for high school recruits is more trustworthy than the On3 portal rankings.

You realize we have scholarship restrictions right now, no?

THIS! People (out of laziness or just stupidity) don't even try to look below the surface and see how our recruits stack up on an player by player basis. I am sure some of the "recruiting geniuses" here would love to be 6th in the rankings like Miami until you actually see they have 14 3* players and the per player ranking is 2 points below ours. We are half a point per player behind Texas who is 5th and they have three more players. For f's sake people.

NIL has only been here for 2 years man. and we immediately snagged the #2 recruit in the nation and one of the best recruits in program history.

Patience, ffs
