8th in Recruiting in the SEC for 24...

There's not really any way to spin the recruiting as a positive on face value. Maybe the players overachieve and Heupel and crew look like geniuses. Recruiting was question #1 for this HC when hired. Other than the Nico "splash" there really hasn't been anything to brag about relative to other mid-level SEC programs (which is what we are). If the football program was a stock, it would be a "sell".

In reality only Auburn and maybe Florida are the schools that should not be expected to have a higher ranked recruiting. The others are long time winning programs that almost always have a top 10 national recruiting ranking. Yep we do need better recruiting but it’s going to be very difficult to do so on a consistent basis.
And those schools are much closer to the talent hotbeds. Middle TN produces good talent nowadays. East TN is slim pickings, and West TN may as well be another state, but we will always get a few from there. We will continue doing well in West Carolina(s), mid Georgia & Alabama north to TN, Virginia and cherry pick from Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, Ark, TX, Louisiana, and Cali like always. Some teams are going to have to drop off some, too. It will happen. I think we recruit well. Need stability & steady improvement.

Yeah. All the defections makes me wonder if something isn't going on.. They need quality there worse than anywhere.. McDonald was a loss. The rest were probably not SEC two deep quality.
Been wondering that for a couple of weeks since the defections started.

Agree that most of those losses among the DBs will not hurt much in terms of quality but there probably isn't a position group on the defense where you need high quality players than DBs. Plus you still have to have depth as well.

So far they have 3 commits from high school guys and an offer out to the DB from CMU.

I know Martinez was on a lame duck contract but it seems they would want to get something resolved there one way or the other ( new contract or preferably replace him ) for the sake of projecting some stability to recruits/transfers.

Not really going to get wrapped up in the rankings debate here.

Tend to lean more toward the guys saying looking at player ranking versus team rankings though. Especially given there are some number crunches going on with sanctions.

Problem with those sanctions is it puts added pressure on the coaches to get it right in their evaluations given they are getting fewer chances at getting it right.

Edit: missed the Thomas kid at DB from MTSU they got in the portal.

I know I’ll be in the minority but I think we’re gonna miss some of the departing DBs next year. Not sure a kid out of HS can step in and play better than what we had.

Definitely in that second level of teams, SEC and nationally.

Agreed.

Guys were maybe lacking in speed and toughness but at least they had some experience. Now you're adding the element of inexperience to the weakest group on the defense.

You have to ignore more things to spin it negatively which you appear to be doing.

So top 6 based on recruit ranking is second level?
Are we talking about this class or the national perception of Tennessee? This class has some good pieces just not enough.. Tennessee is definitely behind a handful of teams in the who's who of college football right now.

We have like 8 scholarship dbs remaining lol & lawd. I regularly check utsports.com and the roster. Jordan Matthews, Christian Charles, Christian Harrison, Conyers, Gibson, Turrentine, Jordan Thomas, John Slaughter. Boo Carter & Beasley Coming in gets us to 10, the transfer to 11. And there is the Goree kid that is Carter's teammate. Largely untested, but we technically have a 3 deep.

A lot of my posts on this ongoing subject are just messing with people. I actually like Heupel and this staff in general. I know we have scholarship restriction issues, and I know we paid Nico a ton of money, not to mention a pretty good sized wad to get some of these guys from last year back. I'd just like to see CJH knock a homer with one of these transfers.
I think and I mean I really don’t know but I think we see way more activity next year. Stability was the focus. When Nico is a junior we should load up and make a run I’m thinking.

We don't have space this year to get a high overall class ranking but our current class is as good as anyone outside Bama or uga.

No one in the who's who had to deal with the ncaa like UT did in the past few years. You have to ignore it to spin UT as a second rate team

Still wrestling control away from Clemson regionally. Clemson climbed as a national power when Tennessee sank. Both recruit the same region’s traditionally.

No one is saying they're second rate. Just in the second level which is where they're at. Heupel has a tough job.. Did pretty well with it so far. Simply too early to know how good he can be here. One thing is for sure he needs more horses..

Good thing they're on a downward trend.. With the Portal and NIL basically being a semi pro free agency, going to be tough building a quality two deep anymore..

Jordan Ross & Mike Matthews this year? You're overthinking it man lol... It is unlikely we jump to the top next year, but "could' make a 12 team playoff. Composite ranked 14 now with sanctions. Lordy lol ☮️

It's pretty clear we are not recruiting at an elite level right now. But I'm not giving up on Heup. The next two classes will be critical though.

Next season and next years class will be critical for The Hype.

I mean we’re under scholarship restrictions, we have to bite that bullet sometime. Our average per player is higher than our average over the past couple of decades. It’s also much higher than a lot of teams ranked in front of us on raw numbers.
Well now you’re applying a level of logic and reason that some just will not countenance.
