9 spots left, how does the class finish up?

This is a great thread. This is the first year in some time that I can remember our recruiting taking shape so early. I feel like almost all of our current commits are rock solid. I feel like most of the top guys we are in it with we have a very good shot at. The only confusing thing about our recruiting right now is how do we settle all the numbers.

This is what I hope/think is possible to happen.

WR- Arnett(1)
TE/OL-Clear(2), Richardson(3)
DL- Wright(4), Drew(5), Couch(6), Johnson(Oversign)
LB- Dawson(7), Paul(8)
DB- Loften(9), King(10), C. Jones(11)

I think if we can land Drew we get one of our current commits to accept a greyshirt or pull an offer. I think we have one big suprise up our sleeve.

Taking a JUCO OL wouldn't be a good move.

Agreed. We have a group that can stay together for another couple of years. I'd rather use it for the DL.

EDIT: Why would we take two WRs? Isn't Meline coming back to offense? And Devrin Young could fill in at the slot at times.

WR- Arnett (1), Dallas (2)
OL- Richardson (3), Clear (4)
DL- Wright (5), Johnson (6)
LB- Paul (7)
DB- Loften (8), Tino (9), King (10)
RB- Buie (11)

Last night I wasn't sure, but now I definitely think the staff would still take Buie. The numbers can still work.

Also, I think the staff should take another DT and oversign just in case someone like Mickey Johnson doesn't qualify.

Two or three years ago, on every kickoff, the one name that you heard most of the time was Lamarcus Thompson. He turned into a pretty good LB. Since the first game of the season, the one name that you consistently hear making the tackle on kickoffs is Crump. Whether he follows in Thompson's footprints is yet to be seen, but it could happen.

No he hasn't. He's on the field because he's what we have.

The dark horse is Alexandro. He has grade issues, but I'm hoping he's a Vol in the end.

UT might be in for some big surprises this year on the recruiting trail. UA and UF are starting to fill the ranks, plus USC and Auburn are not really competing for some of the same players as UT. BUt if UGA conitues to struggle watch out for CDD in GA when players start scrambling if he is gone. And if LSU finally does slip like most believe they will CDD's relationships in LA will pay off. UT is in a great position. A coach with alot of relationships in states where change may be on the horizon with a team that has alot to offer in regards ot early playing time, being a member of the SEC, and alot of tradition.

The will be a long ride until NSD but I think for UT fans it will be a rollercoaster at times and the end payoff.

Glad to know you like our chances :whistling:

If you were a TN fan and you knew that we really needed some rebuilding would you not be worried about our lack or room left with this much time left in the recruiting season?

That is why I a scratching my head as to why the staff accepted a commitment from Devrin Young so early. It's not like schools are knocking his door down to sign him. I wish we would have held out at least until official visits. These players have not even gone on official visits yet. There are a lot of players still left out there and a lot can happen once players start checking out UT on their official visits. We are not giving ourselves much wiggle room. The staff may like D. Young, but why not wait? Chances are they could still probably sign him come NSD, if they really needed to fill the class up. I just do not understand. I wish they would have moved this fast with Eric McClain. That dude is a stud and will be much more valuable over his 4-5 year college career, IMO.

You have to build relationships with recruits. I mean Cobb really only had kentucky after him so there was no reason to pursue him heavily.... oh yeah we came in to late

I guess during the Ole Miss game rather than putting up a statue of Neyland, just put him up. He is average. He would not start at Bama, GA, FL, LSU Auburn or SC.
I am not being mean, just honest.:whistling:

Did not say he would. He's definitely not the most talented or athletic LB on our team. However, among our group, he is the best player.

This. Completely agreed regarding Buie. ABSOLUTELY agreed regarding oversigning with a DT. We can't afford one of our top targets not getting in. With an extra DL oversigned, I'd be ecstatic with this finish.

This does, of course, hinge on us not taking Dixon. If we do take Dixon, do we drop Tino or King? Not doing so would give us 7 DBs (assuming Young stays on offense and special teams), and that's a whole lot for one class. Regarding that last spot, Buie is just the first name that comes to mind, but if someone higher on the list (regardless of position) is interested, we jump on them. If neither Buie nor a higher guy is interested, I say we look in order at DE and LB to fill that last spot.

I think we have 10 spots left (I think we take Loften...I don't think we'll take Dixon)...here's how I see them playing out:

OL: Richardson
TE: Clear
WR: Arnett, Dallas
DT: Wright, Johnson
LB: Paul
DB: King, Thomas, Countess

Hope I'm right

I'm not saying Lamarcus Thompson is better than Al Wilson. I've seen far worse linebackers starting for UT, though. The point I was making is that Crump, who everybody thought was a waste of a scholly last year, may actually turn into a productive player rather quickly. Compare his development to that of Jarod Askew for instance.

Wouldn't mind that class, but. . . SEVEN DBs? I'd rather pull Buie or another DL than a seventh DB.

What have you seen/heard to make you think this?

The VQ guys have talked about him being impressive, just a little small right now. He plays on all the special teams unlike alot of our LBs. I think the staff really likes him.

He made a nice solo tackle on a kickoff this past weekend.

If Crump can learn the playbook, he already has the mindset to just put his head down and knock the hell out of someone - as evidenced by that ST tackle. He blew up a blocker then got right to the returner.

If we are switching to a 3-4, then we only need one more DE for this year it would seem.

We need 2 more LB's. You lose 3 of your top 5. Johnson will be a junior, so will Lathers. We need some more LB's.

At DB, if we keep Meline there, then I don't see why we would take any after if Lofton/Dixon qualify. Maybe Countess?

We definitely need 3 DT's in this class, including a JUCO.

We need two more WR's.

I wouldn't mind 1 more TE.

And then get Richardson & Clear.

That sounds like a good class.

I think Richardson could have an early impact at DT, like some others have said. Would like to see at least 1 ready to play JUCO DT, but probably 2. Can't believe Jessie Williams went to Bama. I'm not going to play the early PT card, but? I really don't see Mickey Johnson making it in. Tennessee is at the point where we can't afford to take non-qualifiers without oversighning. I really would like for CDD to change the culture, to where the only guys we take that may not qualify are true game changers. Part of the reason we are in our current situation is because previous staffs took to many NQ's. Yeah, the class looks good in February, but a great deal of them don't show up in August. That is a bad class. I would rather take a group of 3 & 4 stars that can be coached for 4 or 5 years. That is what builds depth. Harbaugh has done this at Stanford (high level BCS football). Go Vols!

This.

1. Antonio Richardson (OT/DT)
2. Cameron Clear (OT, DL, TE)
3. Arnett (WR)
4. King (DB)
5. Countess (DB)
6. Eddrick Loften ( If he qualifies)
7. Gabe Wright (DT)
8. Mickey Johnson or Jarkarri Kinnie if Mickey doesn't make it
9. Travis Hughes (LB)
I don't think Dixon will be able to make it and if he doesn't make that's 10 spots left for us and I think the 10th spot will be,
10. Jairai Dunaway (LB)
Call me crazy but I think we can finish out with a class like that by NSD.

Travis hughes? I didn't think we had a shot. Are we still considered for him?

Great minds think alike

IF they do end up taking Dixon I have no clue what the staff will do. I can say with 100% confidence they wouldn't drop King though. I could maybe see them dropping Tino, but the staff loves Tino and want him pretty bad. So I'm really not sure.

As for the last part I agree completely.
