A Possible Solution Presents Itself.

If, as becomes increasingly obvious, Pearl is suspended for at least a season and has to ultimately be terminated, the perfect coach to handle his absence/departure became available today. Larry Brown. How do you sell it to him? Simple. You tell him that Pearl is only being kept around out of loyalty and to ensure he is employable when his suspension ends. I raise that issure because if UT immediately fires him, there could be questions as to whether his suspension can be served while he's unemployed. That lets Brown, who has 3 or 4 good years left, settle in with the knowledge he's an interim coach in name only. It also gives you an extended window in which to seek out the long term answer. It's a win for everyone. Brown gets a big check without dealing with NBA egos, Pearl gets the issues resulting from his ethical lapse behind him, and UT keeps its basketball train on the tracks.

Maybe we could entice him with a guarantee that all practices will end promptly at 4:30 for supper and by telling him that he will never have to recruit during Matlock or Perry Mason.

About as good a chance to hire him as Gruden.

so you're saying that we have a chance with Gruden?
that's great! I heard he had property and connections here. I would love to see him courtside, but I don't think he ever leaves Tampa.

I like Larry Brown if Pearl is terminated - but if he declines - why not look at Tubby Smith at Minn.? Would he ever be considered?

He struggled to recruit at Kentucky. While UT is a much easier recruiting job to sell, I don't think Tubby would do well unless he put more effort into it.

Hiring Larry Brown on an interim basis is the basketball equivalent of hiring Monte Kiffin as a DC. Sounds good on paper, but after a season you look back and wonder wtf were we thinking.

I get your point but not sure it's a good comparison.

What other collegiate programs could possibly give Brown a call?

I don't think anyone else at the level he might consider going to will be open. Georgia Tech will go for an up and comer and a loyal UNC soldier like Brown would never go to NC State. The only other place that comes to mind is LaSalle. His family is in Philadelphia and Brown has always talked about going back to some out of the limelight job to finish out his career. LaSalle fits that bill and he certainly doesn't need the money.

Now that it's coming out that Brown didn't voluntarily leave and was actually fired, I wonder how the "Brown just wanted to walk away" crowd will spin things?

Either you are relatively new here, winding up a 3 day crack binge or missed the 1000 Gruden posts on VolNation somehow. I hope you are new here.
