Alabama fan fired after tweeting he was 'glad' receiver struck female Tennessee fan

I’m not confused at all. His employer does have that right. They also have the right to fire you if let’s say your pro life. Pro choice. Republican. Democrat. That’s the slippery slope to which I speak.

The only thing slippery is the fact most people in the past were never in a position where their words were exposed to the public. Those who were have always lived with the knowledge their employer can fire their tail if they say something which doesn't reflect well on them. When someone opens a social media account, they've put themselves in that position. When they also put their position and the name of their employer on the account, they've left themselves no defense.

I think it's chickensnit for folks to dox him and contact his employer, but that's the nature of many people. I've had it happen so many times it's become laughable.

Geeze people these days are so soft and companies are so afraid of the cry baby movements its ridiculous. If I owned that company I'd laugh and say what is Twitter and why should I care.

Sorry, but company reputation is important. What you've spent a lifetime building can be ruined very quickly. He'd have been fired via twitter had it been my company. I am exaggerating, but close.

“If he hadn’t been there, this never would’ve happened. You put yourself into that situation bad things can happen.”

Am I right or am I right Bama fans?

On a serious note, I think it’s both amazing and at the same time sad that we put so much stock into college football. The Twitter dude was a complete idiot. Maybe he even deserved to be fired. I just can’t imagine celebrating someone losing their livelihood over a dumbass social media comment. I realize that’s the world we live in but I think his company could’ve done better by the guy. An apology, some training, etc.

And I can sort of understand that as well. You don’t want your company being mentioned and a customer thinking about this guy working for you. Just a terrible situation made by the guy.

It actuality did matter since it was a satirical attack on racism. Are you saying I shouldn't condone what it implies? Wouldn't that actually make me a racist?

Do whatever you want, adopt whatever attitude you want, twist my post into whatever self-justification you desire, cause you will anyway. Humans gonna human.

We also don't know the circumstances of the termination. I have been part of a lot of "firings." Many of those fired trade a "I won't say anything negative about you or sue you" agreement for a chunk of money that you wouldn't think they deserved (being that they were fired and all). But, a lot of the time, it is the path of least resistance for the employer. We don't know.

They might have given him a severance, who knows. I don't think they needed to give him one.

I don't like alabama fans and yeah it's a really dick thing to say, but I don't want someone to get fired...

I do. People need to remember that even though we have free speech, we aren't free from the consequences. He got everything he deserved.

Yep, being an ******* is 100% legal. I don't think there is any discussion about him being prosecuted.

No, lets just take his job away, possibly his house, car and make his family suffer. Was our corporation harmed, no, better safe than sorry. thats a lot of power to be wielding around. What if they decide people who discuss issues on message boards should be fired? People who watch porn online or people who are have different views on climate change. Where do you draw the line?

Employers have most of the cards in these situations. This absolutely deserved to get fired.

BTW, I am not sure how you can answer the question was the corporation harmed? If you wait for it to be harmed... you've missed that train. Too late to make the right decision because you only made it when forced.

I know people who have been fired over what they wrote on message boards similar to this one. Would be pretty unusual for most folks due to anonymity, but when it can be tied to your employer, it gives them cause. Not sure how watching porn in private could be seen to reflect on ones employer. Espousing views on controversial topics which are contrary to your employer can be a potential problem. They certainly would be in my case due to the nature of my profession, so I don't post such topics on my social media pages. For others, it may well be no problem at all. I'd suggest anyone who isn't sure should get with HR at their place of employment and find out. Also not a bad idea to remove any mention of your employer from your pages unless it benefits your work. And finally, if you even hesitate to post something, don't post it. The whole world is watching.

Only an idiot would use their real name as their twitter handle/username. I have mixed thoughts on his firing. He's entitled to having bad opinions and unless his twitter account directly mentions the company he works for, I think they should let it go with perhaps a week suspension or whatever.
