American Idol 2014

I don't get it. She is 10X more talented than Jena.

It's her mostly emotionless, paralyzed like expression. If you look like all you're doing is singing and not really feeling it the audience is going to see it. She's gotten marginally better with that but too little too late. Plus I don't think the viewers get her personality.

Maybe it's just me but I like the fact that she just sings the song without all the theatrics.

It's not really "theatrics" though that she's missing its just raw emotion in her face that everyone else seems to have. Keith even mentioned it one episode.

Alex doesn't have it. That guy has got this wierd stair climbing thing going on that makes it look like he's about to pee all over himself every time he sings.

Hahaha. I can't explain that but he does have the emotion in his face when he performs, imo. Sam is as questionable as Jessica though with the facial expressions, but she clearly has the better vocals by far.

I like Jessica just standing there and singing. I have considered Jessica and Caleb being the top two for several weeks.

Jessica and Caleb are by far my favorites. Unfortunately the voters seem to disagree with me on Jessica. I can see what coug is talking about with her facial expressions, although I think it's more a case of focus than a lack of emotion.
But it's all about perception I suppose.

It's not just facial expression. Jessica has a great voice, but when she sings, you don't always feel that emotional connection between her and the song. Singing is an artform that allows you to pour your heart out to the world, and I get the feeling Jessica wants to do that, but I also feel she's holding back. The best music is music that just flows from a person's soul, and she hasn't tapped that yet. She's afraid to tap that vein and let it flow, but if/when she does, she's gonna be a success. But she has to make that connection. Right now she's too hung up on this rock chick persona, but what she doesn't/hasn't realized is for all the toughness the rocker chick's showed off stage, on stage they were pure emotion. Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, Hart, they were all bad ass women off stage, but on stage, they poured out their souls, and that's why people loved them.

Very good post Weezer

Alex has that old school vibe going for him. He's a singer/songwriter and he brings originality to every song he sings. People may not like every twist and turn he takes, but he doesn't just simply sing a cover of a song. He takes a familiar song and twists it into something new and original.

Sam is getting by on the teen girl vote. His voice isn't horrible, and I don't think he had a bad week last week, but without the teenage girls, he'd be gone.

If you watched Hollywood week, they didn't edit Jessica in a very flattering light. That probably didn't help her any.

Right now, Caleb and Jena are just hot.

Caleb has the passion to be a great frontman. He's got the charisma and you can tell he honestly loves what he's doing. He's totally rocking out every week, and personally, I think his solo performances are great. (I hate how AI has had the contestants singing duets.)

As for Jena, she has the voice and she's made the connection. Loved it when she sang "Creep". That said, I'm not sure she's that different from current stars. That's not a bad thing, but I've always felt it was good if you could find your own little niche to occupy. Given the competition out there, you have to wonder how good her record sales would be?

I agree, but I think that could easily be overcome if she found the right song and went out on stage and let it bleed. Touch a person's heart just once and they'll see you in a whole new light.

The good thing for all the contestants is you don't have to win to find a career. Idol probably has more non-winners in the business than they do winners.

Yep. Some of the largest stars that got their start on the show did not win.

That's true. I also think the judges have seemed be trying to steer voters away from her. Personally I wish they would dismiss the judges after the field is set. Let's just let the contestants perform without any comments from anyone and let the public vote.

I would keep Keith and Harry. The advice they've given this year is great, imo.

I think Harry is by far the better judge. I am not very fond of Keith or Jennifer's judging, they are more cheerleading than judging. IMO, the talent this year is down. I think the judges could have done better in evaluating the talent.

Even with the voice the judges are there the whole time. One big difference you'll notice between the two shows is that the judges on the voice are more positive with their critiques and they rarely get very technical. Given that, the majority of the contestants on the voice are typically seasoned and older with some exceptions where AI is for the most part younger people.

Jennifer hasn't said much in the technicality department, most of the time it's either I liked it or it could have been better.

Agreed. Harry is very technical and picky which is good. He knows what he's talking about and is well learned. Probably doesn't hurt that he's a Mensa member with a 143 IQ and has been studying music since he was very young. I think Keith does give good advice and he gets as technical as he can, I've heard him give good advice. The talent this year was definitely sub par for AI.

Keith's forte, imo, is performing advice. On a recent show, he warned the singer about what adrenaline does to your pitch. Granted I'm not a singer, that would have never occurred to me. Makes perfect sense though.

Who was he talking to at the time? I must have missed that one. Was probably fast forwarding through it.

I wanna say it was a female. Was there a show where they did a dress rehearsal in front of the coaches? Because I feel like I remember him saying it as a warning for when he/she performed it in front of the audience.

I think they do the dress rehearsals in front of the judges. I remember Steven a couple of years ago commenting about a contestant who had changed the arrangement after the dress rehearsal.

Keith and JLo watch the dress rehearsals. Harry has stated he does not as he wants to be surprised by the live performance.
