Annoying people who always want stuff for free

Not up to me and I only ever tipped out bartenders. I'm simply saying that the belief a server can't be easily replaced by a few less employees and a couple of tablets is very short sighted. It's already happening

I'm going to have lunch at a place tomorrow that uses this technology and I'll ask about this and how it affects the servers and bartenders

I've never said I do not tip. I've simply said to not expect a good tip because you were able to pin 12 pieces of flair to your suspenders
Come on, pj. Most servers are not entitled. However, I do understand and at least have a certain level of compassion and understanding for their situation. Obviously, it would be ridiculous to say they deserve $15 an hour. But again, when their wages (minus tips) have not increased since before Google ever existed, even you have to admit there is a problem. Or, we can just pull our tablets and iphones out and order our meals.

You're also way overstating the "bad customer" rep that servers will talk about. Unless you had been there a dozen times I likely had no clue who you were and really didn't care. I don't ever remember someone coming up to me and saying that the guy at my table was demanding and didn't tip. If they had I likely would have accepted the challenge.

I know at the places (plural) I worked at, even the cooks knew who were the big tippers and who weren't. To say that the servers didn't talk amongst each other or to even try to downplay the communication amongst servers is being a bit disingenuous.

IS technology going to bring your food to you? make your drinks behind the bar? All technology is doing is making sure you can get things a little faster but someone has to make it and someone has to bring it to you

I can actually see it coming where technology will bring your food to you. And sadly I have the design/idea in my head, but I'm not able to actually build it. Not knowledgeable enough in different aspects. And really, I don't know that I would want to. I'm not a fan of ordering from the kiosk to begin with, I think it's a way to eliminate jobs. Same with the "self checkout" isles. 1 person to run 5 or 6 registers. Nope not doing it.

I'm not making the argument that technology can't replace most of these employees. I'm just saying I understand their situation as being significantly diminished as compared to just 18 years ago. It would not surprise me to see restaurants with the Chili's approach taking over more restaurants in the near future. I mean, its now like it is skilled labor. But, since I am aware of their situation, I tip accordingly. Just me, though. If you can sleep at night, that is on you. I'm also equally surprised at your for taking this position.

The wage they're paid is irrelevant unless they can't make enough in tips to cover min wage. My wage could have been zero dollars and I still wouldn't have received a check

It's a handful at most. I also would never take the word of another server that "so-and-so screwed me" because I realize that tips are in the servers control the vast majority of the time. I never had the time to worry about it. Maybe that's some of the issue

You're surprised I'm in favor of people earning their money? You're surprised I find the idea of a min wage to be completely ridiculous? Not sure I've ever thought differently

You're kidding yourself if you think that's the way it will work out. Bus Boys??? Places still have those?

If you don't wanna tip then don't. I'm just telling you, once you get that reputation the service you receive will be less than extrodinary

I mainly tip because I don't want to end up with some weird stuff in my food......but, I would love for a server to give me poor service because I didn't tip well before.

This is ridiculous, if they are expected to get 18-22% in tip, then there shouldn't be a raise in their hourly pay.......most would probably tell you that they don't want that raise (more taxes). It's pretty easy to hide those cash tips for the night.

Bingo! A server only complains about hourly when the place is dead or the managers are in one of their moods and 'asks' them to clean and such while clocked in but not waiting on guests. Could've paid me zero to tend bar. $30 an hour is easy.

Daughter tends bar and I told her she will be taking a heck of a pay cut when she starts teaching.

I understand you believe in people earning their money and not in a minimum wage. I guess I am a bit surprised that a former service industry worker would think that a present day service worker has entitlement issues because they expect to get a 15-20% tip. I am well aware 20% is on the high end for most 'Muricans, but knowing what i know about how that industry is, I just have a different perspective.

You guys could just be cheap and order your foid to go and not have to tip :)

It's not the tipping that I have an issue with, I gladly tip and understand the game. It's when I get terrible service and tip hardly anything, I'm being told that I'm not giving enough to support that server since they only make 2.13 or whatever an hour.

I think Carl Jr's ready to try this

No, I feel strongly about service workers complaining about their tips and thinking it's my responsibility to make sure their wage requirements are met. I have no issues paying for the service
Where do you go out to eat with the servers beeching about their tips and wage requirements in your presence? Or do you have Superman hearing abilities eavesdropping on their conversations behind the bar or in the kitchen?

If the servers or whoever told you you're not giving enough to support the server doesn't understand that the better the service they give the better the tip, were either raised by idiots or aren't bright enough to tie their own shoes.

Read the thread squirrel

They will not lose money. You can't tip out what you don't have and the salary is still brought to min wage

I don't believe I ever worried about what they said my pay was. Never received a check once I finished training

In his scenario, it's possible. Many restaurants have required tipouts that servers have no ability to change. If a server waits on 12 tables and gets stiffed on all 12 of those tables, the restaurant will still require tipout paid based on the amount of sales from your 12 tables.

I vehemently disagree. I almost always remember if I've waited on a customer before. At the least, I'll know they look familiar when they walk in the door. If that person left a great tip, I associated that face with a great tip. The other way is the same. The only way I wouldn't give a server a heads up about a person is if I hated that server and wanted them to fail.

Look, I have no problem with a bad tip going to a server who offered bad service. On multiple occasions over a decade I've had a bad tip and thought "yup...deserved that." It's the person wholly prepared to tip horribly before they even step foot outside the house that I'm talking about.

And as for the server telling me that someone was a bad tipper...if I don't trust that person to be a good employee, I pay no attention to their warning.

Yes. Some restaurants still have bussers. They receive a tip out just like a runner or bartender.
