Antonio Barton is coming to UT

Adding Barton is huge. I couldn't believe it when I heard the news yesterday. I had given up hope on landing him. Should be a really fun year in TBA!

Can't wait to see the first team that tries to zone against us this season.
I have visions of Martin surrounding it with Barton, McRae and Hubbs.
All 3 can fill it up from downtown.

And stokes/Maymon will dominate the glass against a zone.

It says that Josh Pastner brought in players that were even better than them so they both left bc they weren't going to play. Good problem to have if your Pastner....

If you're referring to Austin those guys are in for a shock....Austin IS NOT a banger and is more of a mid-range type of guy...Black just could never get his head going in the direction that JP wanted, I guess....I know we ALL know this but as long as JP is the coach at Memphis or at least for a long time, the Tigers will struggle to be relevant...Good guy...just hasnt learned to coach yet....

Don't think so on Tarik. Tarik would have played alot. He and Pastner had some disconnect, and Tarik wanted a change of scenery. Iverson may not qualify and is a stick anyway. Nichols is raw. They brought in a transfer from GW, who I don't think played last year. Nothing else except Shaq. Tarik would have had many minutes to play.

Not at all the case with black, and if you say it is you're true Memphis colors are showing. There's a reason Memphis pursued a JUCO who ended up at Clemson, and now is pursuing Woodson...they have a big need in the post.

Good grief. I'm not a Kentucky fan, but since you wondered aloud I'll offer just a few reasons. Maybe b/c Kentucky won the Natl championship 15 months ago with freshman. Maybe because last year for Kentucky was an anomaly and a whole new crop of incredibly talented kids, many would argue the most talented ever in one class, are on their way to Lexington. Maybe because last year's game with Kentucky, which was fun as hell to watch, has absolutely zero impact on the game this year....if anything, it gives Kentucky ammo. Maybe because the only thing CCM has proven at UT is that he's got a cool name and can snarl real neat. And bringing it full circle to this thread, maybe because great teams rely on their backcourt to win games (see desperate need for Antonio Barton who left Memphis b/c he's not talented enough to get on the floor for them).

Edit: And it's because ESPN hates us.

sounds like a butthurt Memphis fan. maybe you should remove that power T from your icon list

Nothing against Coach Martin or anything, but Pastner has only been a head coach for 4 years, compared to Martin's 5...
Pastner has also been an Assistant Coach since 2002, compared to 2000 when Martin began...
Pastner has also been to the NCAA Tournament 3 out of 4 years, compared to Martin's 0 for 5...
Pastner has also had two Top 5 recruiting classes, compared to zero for Martin...
Pastner is also 3-0 against Martin in head to head matches as head coaches...

Basically what it shows is that Martin and Pastner have the same amount of coaching experience, but Pastner has proven more as a coach. Did I say improved more?? No...but he has proven more.

I know your argument was not directed towards Pastner, but when you compare stat sheets between the two, then Pastner is clearly the better coach.

And before anyone says anything about me being a negavol, let me tell you that I am a neutral fan whenever it comes to basketball. Too many Vols/Tigers fans between my friends and family.

FWIW...Barton is an awesome pick-up for Martin and will start for the Vols next season. He has more floor knowledge and leadership than Golden, and can lead this team to Martin's first NCAA Tournament appearance.

Pastner got a completely different situation than CM did. I'm not a CCM fan at this point but to use the garbage "stats" that you presented is an insult to everyone's intelligence. They are meaningless and irrelevant in deciding who is the "better coach". I'll give you the head to head as that is relevant IMO.

I obviously agree with the stats, but you cannot simply just compare them like that. IMO, it is apples to oranges. I think you could compare Pastner's years to Martin's years at UT. But, Pastner took over a program that Cal took to the top. Yes, I know that Cal took all of his recruits, but the facilities were improved under Cal, and the "goodwill" of the program was greatly enhanced. Martin took over a losing program at Missouri State. In fact, if you want to look at what he has proven, he improved the record every year. He had them in position to go to the Dance his last year, they lost in the semis or finals in the conference tourney, and was left out with a 40 something RPI. Then, look at what they did after he left.

Look, Pastner has probably proven more and has shown to be a better recruiter, even though he still hasn't beaten a top 25 team yet. But, you have to understand the reason for the numbers and not just for what they are.

And Pastner has had much more talent than Martin and only beaten one Top 25 team in 4 years (St. Mary's who was ranked in one poll). Pastner has gotten to play Martin with a UT team that had very little experience in Martin's first year and coming off of a NCAA investigation. He beat them twice last year without UT's best player. I'd hardly call that clearly the better coach given the circumstances. Pastner was in year 3 and 4 and Martin was in year 1 and 2.

Better recruiter? Yes, but hell, you and I could recruit with that talent in the backyard at Memphis. Pastner hasn't proven yet that he can get that talent to mesh and coach them up. One NCAA win in 4 years and only one Top 25 win proves that so far. Martin has beaten much better teams with less talent. That tells me more about a coach than anything.

Says a lot that he repeatedly goes to the tournament without beating ANYBODY!!

They don't deserve to go to the tournament IMO. Think about it. Martin has way more impressive victories in 2 years at UT than Pastner has in 4 years at Memphis.

Put CJP in Cuonzo's position when he took over for CBP and I seriously doubt he would have had been as successful as Cuonzo.

I agree with this 110%

Pastner has had the luxury of being in C-USA for 4 years, if he was in a real conference I doubt his résumé would be better than Martin's. What makes Pastner's resume better is mostly directly correlated to him being in C-USA.
