Any chance Butch brings Fulmer back?

I've noticed how well Butch has done in getting former players to come back and represent UT. Any chance he finds a way to bring Phil back in some capacity? I'd love to see him honored at a game sometime

Coach Majors as well

If by bring back, you mean heal the rift, then I'd like to see it happen. Fulmer has left a great legacy at UT that deserves recognition. If you mean hire him, then you're crazy. One of the things Dooley did that I actually liked was reach out to Majors. I wouldn't be against CBJ doing the same with Fulmer. At the end of the day, they're part of the UT family. It's a dysfunctional family, but a family nonetheless.

Whew! I thought you meant as a coach.

I think it is almost certain that he will get around to making peace between Fulmer and the program. He may not have the political capital to do it right now though.

He will invite Fulmer back the same way he invited the players back. As an interested observer.

CPF and CBJ have gotten together multiple times. Fulmer was at a gathering of former Vols a month or so ago in the Tennessee Terrace, along with Coach Jones..

there is peace

The most epic picture would be Majors and Fulmer shaking hands with Butch in the middle. It'd say a lot.

Good deal. I was thinking more public and perhaps in a way directly related to the team... like attendance at practice or speaking to the team.

And for his next act, Jones would walk across the Tennessee and pull a drowning man out of the middle... or maybe he could take a couple of cobs of corn and some milk and provide fans at the first game with nachos.:p

That would be a historic reconciliation for the program. Given the two... I would rather him favor Majors though. IMHO, 98 never happens if Majors had not rebuilt the program.

Correct me if I am wrong (I am sure you will). The team was losing when Majors took his hiatus. CPF takes over and they win. Majors comes back and they again lose.

I think they believe the media and fans would bring up to many negatives from that for there to be positives brought from it. Too many fans still have bad feelings toward Coach Fulmer and it is best for program to not have that being tossed around publicly.

If you pay attention just to message boards, lots of negativity when coaches name comes up, on several Tennessee message boards. He could bring some positives, but negatives not needed during a rebuild..

Fulmer went 3-0 versus ULL, UGA, and UF Majors returned and went 5-3 for the remainder of the season. But the three losses came in a row to Arkansas, Bama, and USCe. That Bama loss was the 7th in as many years and probably became the proverbial "straw".

Majors took over the program when it was at a low point and built it into a winner over 15+ seasons. Three of his first 4 seasons he had a "non-winning" record and a total W/L of 21-23-1. During his last 4 seasons, he was 34-9-3 with two SEC championships plus Cotton and Sugar Bowl wins.

By comparison, Fulmer took over a healthy program. During his first 4 years he went 33-7 with a win and loss at the Citrus Bowl plus wins at the Hall of Fame and Gator Bowls. He did not win the SEC in that span. His career at UT ended as he drove the program into the ground. Over his last 4 years he went 29-21 with 2 losing seasons.

In 15+ seasons including a rebuilding period, Majors won the SEC 3 times. CPF won it only twice after taking over a healthy program. Majors' 4-12 record vs Bama was a big factor in him being fired. Fulmer went 11-4-1 vs Bama as they went through a series of mediocre coaches prior to Saban.

Majors did screw up aside from his health problems and some political enemies he had made. There were rumors of racist comments. His drinking problem was widely known and did apparently effect his work. Some openly stated that Majors was not really running the team anyway.

I'm not arguing that Majors should not have been fired. He should have and the timing worked well for a young, energetic Fulmer to take the program further.

Fulmer in retrospect was probably kept 3 years too long... but it would have been nearly impossible to see that in 2005.

Fulmer was ousted, plain and simple. Its just awkward now, like a divorced couple having to spend time together. Let the man be. UT no longer needs him, he doesnt need UT, and he represents a dying (probably dead) era of college football where association and loyalty to a program gave you access to the program. it is different world we live in these days. at least he didnt go out like paterno

I agree, but that is like saying that Charles Manson has more moral fiber than Satan.

Janacek and Martinez scare me a bit.

Where in the Bible did you get that Satan was immoral? He tested and exposed people's weaknesses. He made them crumble at their own flaws. Sounds like a hell of DC to me. I do not get your analogy.

You forgot to mention anything about the meaningless National Championship and the 5 out of 6 six seasons Fulmer won 7+ games b/t `93-98. You are trying to suggest Fulmer's success was based on Major's which is beyond comical. You give us 8 years from coaches that had over 30 yrs coaching b/t them to tell us what we need to know about them. If anything, Id say looking at our post Fulmer era we fired him too quickly instead of securing a proper coach. Hahahha a quoted "non-winning" record, i love that. Give me a f'ing break you clown. Do you write for MSN sports or something?

halftime of the LSU game is when everything unraveled on Majors. several assistants were ready to pack it in and many, many players were talking transfer at end of season. Losing the 3 games in a row, made things much easier for Dickey to make the change. Had no change been made, massive turnover in staff and roster would have happened at season's end..

So elaborate on the unraveling and the reason for the disgruntled staff and players. And try to keep the random commas at a minimum.

Sjt has some mental issue, every Fulmer thread he spews his garbage over and over again.

And, you seem to have conveniently overlooked PF's last eight years. You seem to be the "clown."

We should thank Larry for his insightful comments, rather than snide remarks.
I too would like to know what JM did in the lockerroom of the LSU game in 92.

By the way, there is no reason to bash PF, or JM; I don't know why some posters use every opportunity to continue to bash PF particularly. It makes the fanbase look petty and silly; we should only hope that, unlike our last two coaches, BJ can get us back to where those coaches had us at the pinnacle of their careers. Thank goodness the vast majority of our fans don't get their willies boosting their delusional egos on these message boards.........

we settled for a field goal inside the 5 yard line right before the half and JTM went ballistic in the locker room at halftime for not getting TD. several coaches left the locker room and indicated they were done working for him. CPF got them pulled back in. CJM was cursing out coaches and players something he had been doing frequently anyway. Many had had enough of it..

conversation occurred back in Knoxville the next day.. another CJM incident later in month with some big donors and the 3 losses closed the book on his career.
