Any Vols Coming out to California for the Cal Game?

A Cal fans suggestion on what to do in Berkley...

http://forums.scout.com/mb.aspx?S=166&PMB=Inbox#S=166&F=1419&T=153263

No need to try to tailgate away from home (with a rental car?), just do what the Cal fans do: take BART (public transit) in and enjoy the day in Berkeley. Come early, get coffee at a cafe:eek:lol: , explore campus and Telegraph Avenue, eat cheap student food:good!: , head over to Bear's Lair/Kip's Henry's/Faculty Club to drink beer and watch the East Coast games :clapping:, and follow them up to the stadium, get more beer at the Fun Zone (Maxwell Family Field), go to the game. After the game, get more beer or coffee (what is with the coffee push?), depending on your need and make dinner plans :snoring: .

"enjoy the day in Berkeley."

That my friends is an oxymoron if I have ever heard one. I would sure like to set that guy straight!

I would stick with the funzone and campus eating facilities, and a few friendly bars that are not anti-Cal...

what top WR are we missing?

DeSean Jacksean is the Teddy Ginn of the West Coast. Lavelle Hawkins will be a senior. Forsett will be another great TB for them. The D is where they lost their best players. The MLB Desmond Bishop, the CB Hughes and Mebane the DT.

Also Cal fans, what about Kyle Reed? He was a big time recruit and I have not heard much about him. Any chance of him playing over Longshore?

Kyle has had trouble grasping the offense from what I have heard. Tedford runs a very, very complex set of schemes that are not easily learned. Last year he was only able to make fifth string from what I recall. One walk on QB was the fourth string. I am not sure what the problem is with him. He looked really, really good at one time.

But to answer your question, there is probably only a 10% chance, at best, that he will start over Longshore. As it stands we have a great QB from Oregon, Kevin Riley, as well as a stud coming in from Texas, Brock Mansion.

I feel bad for Reed, I really do. He may end up like your guy's third stringer who recently quit to play tennis, even though he was not highly rated like Reed. Others say he may look to transfer, which, if it would work out better for him, I would not be against.

Many national publications have predicted D Jax (Desean Jackson) will be the most dangerous WR in the nation this year if Nate holds up. We must not forget also that he led the nation in punt return TD's last yr. How are your special teams in Tennessee?:dance2:

Well that is unfortunate to hear. I will be the first to admit that your team offers many unique challenges, and is quite talented. I had hoped we would be able to exploit weaknesses in your special teams. If you say they are much improved, we may need to explore other weaknesses. Still, Desean Jackson is the best punt returner in the country, so perhaps he will fare well.

I get more excited as each day passes in anticipation of this showdown. I think the fact a team as credible as Tennessee is willing to come play in our neighborhood is great. I am really going to miss you guys’ next yr. Now, if we could just get rid of the immoral hippies! And perhaps get Florida to come out here and play us?

Thanks for the answers and good luck with the hippies.

I realize we have all done a wonderful job of making this forum much more civil in recent days, still, won’t anyone argue with me? How about the Desean Jackson is the best punt returner in the country comment? I was sure that would upset someone? Am I to take this silence as a sign of agreement? Or perhaps respectful trepidation?

I am certainly not trying to start anything, being as we are on the same page with the hippies. But I still think we can agree to disagree about many football issues. Here is a good one, quick, when was the last time Tennessee played anywhere in the state of California? That’s a tough one. Did they come out to play Cal in 87 or 88? Or was that only Cal who traveled to Tennessee?

Allow me to clarify, please. I meant to say debate, not argue. The last thing I want to do is argue with you nice folks. I would love to debate though...

The reason you lost last year was poor tackling and catching passes and UT was on that game and when there on, very few teams can win in K ville.

We opened the '89 season at UCLA. We also opened the '90 season against Colorado in Anaheim.

How much of Cals RBs are returning and how do Cal fans view UT as a whole?

forsett (lynch's backup returns). when he has blocking he is a very good back. our oline should be vastly improved from last years tenn game. We return two first team pac-10 olineman, compared to last year when we we lost 3 nfl draft picks on the oline. The line really started to click in the bowl game. Behind forsett is slocum and montgomery (redshirt freshman) and best and vareen (true freshman). All four were very highly recruited. montgomery and best were both the northern california players of the year.

Cal fans respect UT quite a bit after last season. Some expect a win only because we think our team will be rather motivated and we expect our offense to be among the best in the country. Some are more confident, others think we will lose. Normal fans i suppose.

Our sole returning running back of any significance is Justin Forsett. He managed to rush for 999 yards in 05 as a backup to Lynch. This year we have James Montgomery, Tracy Slocum and also true freshmen Javid Best, who may not redshirt. Cal has a history of getting great backs on the field right away, as they did with Lynch in 04.

A majority of Cal fans love the fact that we are finally playing teams with the stature of Tennessee. In years past teams such as yours did not want to play Cal. I can’t remember a bigger team coming to Memorial since the 97 season, in which Nebraska came to play us. I was at that game, and it was not a happy day, we lost 21-3.

Much has changed since then though. We have a new coach and great recruiting classes. I think most Cal fans are somewhat envious of Tennessee. They would never admit this, but the feeling is there. I can honestly say this; if we were to beat you guys everyone would go crazy. That would be the biggest deal for us in a long time. Many feel (not Cal fans) until we can beat a team like yours we are overrated.

Knowing that does it ad any pressure? Or are you guys supremely confident that you will kill us? You must take into account you will be playing a team with a chip on its shoulder the size of the Titanic. You guys losing to Penn St. doesn’t help matters though. I am sure the whole team and coaching staff is pissed about that. Naturally they will try to take that frustration and anger out on us, as we are the first game of the season. Hmm, this is going to be great!

A lot of people say overated but I think they fail to show up when it counts but that they have the talent to make it happen. Do you put any of this on the coach?

Coach Tedford is revered as a God to most Cal fans. Many would take a bullet for him. Any talk against Tedford is considered a real taboo. In the south you guys are a little different, you seem to love to attack coaches. Sometimes that can be a good thing. Perhaps if we had that kind of mentality we would not have had to suffer through the Tom Holmoe yrs.

Tedford though is our God and no, we put nothing on him. Now, his O coordinator, Mike Dunbar, (or dumbbell) he can definitely be blamed! Thankfully he quit after one yr and went to Minnesota. This yr JT will resume play calling which has most people euphoric!

sometimes tedford gets too conservative in big games. the only true coaching f-ups were the holiday bowl against tech and the UT game. You turn a 1-10 program into a perenial top 25 team and you get a little slack from the fanbase. the fact of the matter is we were overachieving until last season. only last season had tedford had 4 solid recruiting classes and the depth and talent to really challenge the big boys. most feel last seasons game at UT was coached poorly but it might have been unrealistic to expect to beat UT at home with a QB with zero experience, and an inexperienced o-line. It's the way we lost that made many flame tedford. The rest of the season vindicated him i would say. The arizona loss was a bit of a fluke and really has to be put on bad luck and the players not getting up for it.

edit: a lot of us think this "doesn't show up for big games" stuff is a bit silly. we can point to 20 tedford victories that going into the game seemed huge, but later lacked luster because of what the other team did later. if we had beated you last season this wouldn't have been considered a good win either i'm sure since you would have been 9-4. if we had beaten tech that wouldn't have been considered a big win either. yes we haven't beaten SC since 2003, but not many other people have either and tedford has played SC better and closer than any other coach in the country. Just ask pete carroll and trojan fans. The majority of SC fans don't flame tedford and Cal for being overrated trust me.
