Anyone play guitar?

I've been playing for 12 years. Still need to get around to learning how to read music. I've been winging it on tabs this whole time. I really want to start studying music theory and really dive into writing music.

I suggest Berklee Press A Modern Method for Guitar and Harmony in Context by Roig-Francoli for theory.

Just added Levon Helms version of Tennessee Jed to my learn to play list. Just finished learning Blue October's Hate Me and Oak Ridge Boys Ball & Chain.

been playing guitar for 10 years...but dobro is my speciality. look up Earl Scruggs Calgary Canada on you tube. I'm the only girl :) and you'll learn what a dobro is.

Awesome. I have several Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs songs on my IPOD. Did you ever check out The Sons of Silvia, formerly the Clark Brothers?

devoted about ten mins to learn the only song I know how to play "Seven Nation Army" by the white stripes.

If you can learn a song in ten minutes then my hat is off to you.

My routine usually goes something like: "Play it a thousand times and it's a piece of cake"

Of course I'm a little slow at most things.

GBO !

My dream guitar:

A Taylor 714ce

Great choice ! Do you play mostly fingerstyle? The cedar top would be awesome for that. I have a 2003 814ce with the Expression System and a sitka spruce top and love it.

Not sure how experienced you are, so ignore this if you already know.

IMHO the best way to buy a guitar is on the used guitar market. It is also best to play it before you buy it. I bought my used Taylor unplayed, however, off the internet from Buffalo Brothers in CA. Taylors are prety consistent IMHO and so you have a decent shot of getting a good guitar. I wasn't disappointed, and with a large volume dealer you have a good chance of returning it if you don't like what you get.

Guitars get better as they age, and so I have never found it important enough to pay extra to get a new guitar.

Play as many guitars as you can while you are looking. Stop in every guitar store you can find wherever you go. When you play several different guitars in the same setting you can really hear the differences. Pick a few of your favorite songs and play them on every guitar to hear the subtle differences the way you play. If you are going to play it amplified then plug them in and hear how the different pickup systems sound through an amp.

I loved shopping for a guitar almost more than I liked buying one. If you find the right store you can play $30,000 worth of guitars and walk out on cloud nine. (Although I did usually buy a set of Elixirs or a pick to pay them back for letting me sit there for an hour.

Recommended places to shop.
- Guitar Centers (carry Taylors to play but not many used ones - make friends and you can get them to let you play the expensive ones. Mostly they stock $300 - $500 models from other makers.
- Artisan Guitars in Franklin - No Taylors, but Bourgois, Collins, & Santa Fe. High end and great stuff.
- Fretted Instruments in Birmingham (Linwood) - Mostly Martins, but just a great shop with lots of used guitars.
- Search the Internet. Plenty of reputable shops that market through the web. Some have some pretty good return policies. (i.e. Buf Bros will give you full trade in credit on any guitar you buy there when you buy a more expensive one from them. IMO they aren't risking much, as we always want MORE guitars as well as better ones, but it does protect you from a lemon.) Most will also post detailed pictures of the one you're buying if not sound files.
- Use Ebay for price discovery. Watch all of the Taylor 714's for a couple of months and track the final sale price. This will let you know what they are really worth based upon age, model, etc. Plus I just like to look at guitars ! I couldn't bring myself to actually buy one off there, but it was great to see what certain guitars were worth.

Anyway - Have fun - I have bought two guitars this way and loved every month of it ! (It takes me a long time to make a decision !)

It is a cake song man. I just don't have time to mess with a guitar as much as I should.

I can read music just do not put the time into it. I use to play the piano still can a little bit.

No offense intended. I can read music (band in HS) but have never translated it into the guitar, so I play "paint by numbers" guitar. Show me the tab or the chord chart and I'm in. Needless to say my repertoire is quite limited and mostly rhythm.

I'd love to have an OM, and have tried to learn more fingerstyle. Seems like they get an amazing sound for not a lot of effort, whereas flatpicking I work myself to death for one decent sounding run.

Still love it, though !

Don't get too down about your axe. Glenn Frey's stage Takamine is almost legendary, and their Cool Tube pickup/preamp is pretty sweet.

But I know - we all want what we don't have. I'm holding out for a Martin/Collings/Bourgeois OM, or maybe a Martin 000-28 Norman Blake. Or dare I say Brazillian?

GAS baby !

How many weeks/months does it take to pick one up and get to an OK level of strumming around if you have no real music background? And do the online tutorials work or do you need real lessons so to speak?

I've been playing guitar and piano for 3 years now and I've never taken any lessons and I also can't read sheet music or chord charts.

I watched YouTube tutorial videos until I got it down perfectly..depends on which videos you come across but I actually learned from them pretty well.

I have no musical background either..if you're a quick learner it shouldn't take long.

You can definitely get by without knowing how to read music. Pick a few songs you'd like to learn, look up the tabs online (very easy to read) and get going.

So I found this "How to Play" video for the opening of the Faces - Stay With Me. It's one of my favorite guitar openings and this video is great for learning it.

On a side note, it's my first time doing Open E tuning and messing around I've found that it is likely the tuning for She Talks to Angels by the BlackCrowes and September Girls by Big Star. Gonna mess around with this tuning to see what comes out.

I'm sure we have a few people that have mastered the main riff to Smoke on the water.

Thats about the only thing I ever learned and quit. Now thats a foggy memory. Something like 3 6 5 Open 3 6 5?

Must be something in the air, both my daughter and wife just started their first lessons. We bought her a 3/4 size. My nephew is quite good and has an acoustic Taylor. I have a classical acoustic which uses Nylon strings and it is difficult to play. The Taylor is awesome, even the little 3/4 my daughter has is easier than the classical.

We call my daughter's lessons our retirement plan. The next Taylor Swift :)

It's fun helping them learn chords. Plan to teach the little one a few old Heavy Metal riffs when she is ready. Nothing like some Rush or AC/DC on acoustic.
