Army Soldier refuses to salute flag

This is a bit overblown. I've seen plenty of chiefs and officers start to walk outside, notice the anthem was playing, and quickly the shut the door back. This girl didn't turn her back to the flag, she just stayed in her car. Which is in no way wrong. If you're in your car, you stay there.

Stupid selfie! Soldier posts pic of herself avoiding flag salute, ignites online firestorm* - NY Daily News

So what's everyone's thoughts on this?

I think she has the right not to salute the flag, but only if she's a civilian

She swore an oath to defend this country. That flag flies proudly over this country and a lot of soldiers died defending that flag.

My dad served in Vietnam under that flag and I think its a damn disgrace for her to do that while acting in her position

She is a disgrace to the uniform and this nation

i think she was being lazy and thought it would be funny to shoot the picture. you see a lot of folks speed out the gate at 4:59 so they don't get caught be retreat. she's not unpatriotic, just stupid.

The bragging about it then giving taxpayers a big FU while being all about herself is the major offense here. She sucks.

I was wondering how criticizing her for doing this = you think she should be discharged or killed for it.

VFB hopped on the strawman train real hard

again, that post wasn't for the guy griping, aka, the guy you're responding to. But thanks for playing bham.

I just take offense to any disrespect for the flag

I never served but I have friends and a father who did and I wouldn't disrespect their service by being disrespectful to our flag, even if it put me out or had to do it everyday

Afterall, that flag flies over the greatest country in the world.

They let anybody in the Army these days

The answer is unequivocally a yes.....its not as bad as when I was of that age (late 60's) and people would frequently join as an alternative to going to jail but now days its a viable option for those who can't get a job with the county or at Walmart...

I used to visit Fort Stewart all the time. Nice enough base, but out in the middle of nowhere.

I was stationed there for a few years. You have hinesville & then 20 miles every other direction before you get anywhere. It's fairly close to savannah & that's not too bad. As for the topic, the military is littered with idiots & people like her.

It's a honor to wear that uniform, not a gimme. People died for that flag to be flown. Yah. VMB, your right people duck and hide from it all the time & now it's finally being made public & it's about damn time. Our military has got soft as ****! If she was in the army not even 20 years ago she would be laying in medroom unconscious. She is a disgrace to our country. Mock me all you want. That flag has meaning. That flag is a symbol to this nation. We don't just salute the flag we salute out brothers in arms who died protecting it.

She should get dishonerbly discharged & through out processing her duty should be to raise that flag every day and lower it every night! While singing the anthem! My jimmies are severely rustled!

the big thing about her is posting it on the internet and being proud of it,attention w****
I was in the Navy and us hole snipes never got off early enough to be off the ship,on the rare occasions that we did,we always turned and saluted the flag

I had a Captain run me down for 2 blocks and give me hell, because I didn't salute him, even when i tried to tell him I didn't see him,of course me and a friend were off the ship having a hydraulic lunch :beerf:

Tums, does Savannah still have that smell? Back in the 80's the paper mills were stankin up place.

You'll catch something awful every now and then while driving on I-95 between I-16 and 204. But other than that I haven't noticed anything.

I was at Ft. Benning a few years ago and was surprised to see them still doing it. I guess it was an AF thing.

That is definitely not an AF thing. I retired in 2012 and still work as a DoD civilian on an AF installation. The proper procedures are as follows:

At the first note of Reveille, Retreat and the National Anthem, you should bring your moving vehicle safely to a complete stop as you would if an emergency vehicle were approaching and put the car in park. Base guidance is that personnel turn off any music playing in the vehicle. Everyone inside the vehicle, including the driver, should remain seated at attention.

There has never been an AF requirement to exit your vehicle and render the appropraite salute as long as I have been affiliated with the AF...since 1991.

I get that all DoD services enjoy friendly banter with their sister services (not our fault we made the better decision :) ) but the AF still performs this every day on installations across the globe.

Did some people stay inside vice going out and rendering the appropriate customs and courtesies...you bet your azz some did. But I never saw a military member run and duck to avoid it...that is shameless.

No, it's not an I hate America thing. But it is a breach of core discipline for the basic customs and courtesies that one is required to adhere to when they put on that uniform. If if one can't even be disciplined enough to perform such basic duties as a military member, how could I ever trust them to do their job under fire?

And the fact that you are attempting to defend such a failure to adhere to standards just baffles the daylights out of me.

Out of curiosity, what was your MOS?

just for clarity... By run and duck, I simply mean that there are two preliminary calls before Retreat actually starts. One fifteen minutes prior and one 5 minutes prior. By run and duck, I mean most people that hear the 5 minute call, make sure to get themselves inside. Perhaps that has caused mass confusion. I've seen plenty of people ignore the flag, but I've never seen one run after retreat sounded.

On the Air Force base I worked at I never heard a warning call like you described. I actually worked in the command post, so we were responsible for making sure everything played on time.

But like you said, I have never seen anyone walk away from the anthem. I have seen some people start to walk out, notice the time and them jump inside real fast.
