Army Soldier refuses to salute flag

On the Air Force base I worked at I never heard a warning call like you described. I actually worked in the command post, so we were responsible for making sure everything played on time.

It's an Army and Navy thing (not sure about the Marines). The Navy Wing on Tinker AFB did it on their specific complex there, but it wasn't a base thing being Air Force and all.

I'm still not seeing what she did wrong.

To me it's the bragging about being disrespectful. Some might assume she was driving, but her comments of "this is me hiding so I don't have to salute" implies she either ran to her car and jumped in or was parked and refused to get out.

Her comments about "IDGAF" were the icing on the cake.

Since when do you have to get out? I never once read that in any AFI, nor did I ever observe anyone getting out of their car to salute.

I think its her audition pic for Swank or High Society.

I have all kinds of conflicting thoughts about the topic...my perspective is that of someone who worked for a huge multi national and faceted company with one aspect of the business being a defense contractor...high end defense systems, hard and software, etc...

My direct exposure working with DOD/military was limited but enough to have a very poor opinion of how the 'business' was operated....on a couple of occasions my group was required to assist the DOD side..other times I was required to accept personnel from that group including retired military, who on the whole were the most worthless contingent you could ever imagine...lazy, entitled, and not very knowledgeable....when possible I would refuse transfers and do without not wanting to negatively impact my core group...when I was a young engineer I trained military personnel in the application of our products...the lack of skills and character was actually scary....this was just post Vietnam and I hope that has improved....

Obviously I have poor opinion of the military but I think its a fair and objective one...and while not saluting the flag in and of itself isn't a big deal I can't imagine not saluting it...I'm NOT a gun ho flag waver kind of person but the flag, the music and what it represents never fails to move me, often to tears with pride and honor...

During detail cycle at Campbell I had to be NCOIC of the flag detail several times, once a driver clipped one of my road guards trying to speed past as he was posting. I don't know if it went to CM or not but later heard he got busted and 30 days for it.

Let me know what you find. The only thing I see that she was necessarily wrong about was her attitude towards the situation.

On Ft Campbell, you had to get out of your vehicle if you were in view of the flag.

Interesting. I've never seen or heard that one. Was it only a base instruction or an army instruction?

My earlier post indicated no need to get out of the car for AF. However, you ARE required to sit at the position of attention.

The issue is her disrespectful IDGAF attitude. I could give two ***hs about her avoiding retreat. I do however give two ***hs about her attitude, and her need to degrade what it means to wear the uniform when you post shizz like that while in uniform.

I do agree with your comments about her attitude. I hadn't seen her actual post until recently. I thought this was simply an issue of her not jumping out of her car.

From the Naval Officers Guide, 11th Ed, pg 79:
Automobiles in the vicinity also stop, and the individuals riding in them do not salute but remain seated at attention during the ceremony.
It's simple. Stop, turn off the radio and sit at attention until colors is complete.

FWIW, if you think this girl's actions are rare you are misguided. If you do nothing to correct the problem on site, you are equally guilty.

I only take offense to her overall demeanor towards the situation.

Completely agree. Walk around any base at 0759 and you will see the same thing. The only difference is they aren't posting selfies and bragging for everyone to see.
