Auburn/Cam Newton situation (merged)

Don't read too much into Fitzsimmons saying he isn't saying he is going to be suspended.

There is a reason it was put out in the first place... he just got ahead of himself that is all.

Well, thanks for playing Auburn. All I can say is, thank God Bama lost to LSU, no way in hell Auburn will beat them if Cam is suspended.

Evidently, Fitzsimmons has retracted his story about the 'AA suspending Newton, for now.

I think at some point we will see student athletes receive some type of pay and it will be warranted.

Nope, won't happen.

First off, there are Title 9 issues. Secondly, how do you pay for it? Believe it or not, but the overwhelming number of colleges athletic departments are already operating in the red. That's a lot of $ to pay, not just to football players, and where will it come from? But perhaps most important, this won't solve the problem. If UT or any college is allowed to pay an athlete X$ per year, what's going to stop USC from paying him 2X$ per year, part of it illegally as is now done.

Don't know the answer to the "big-picture" problem, but paying the athlete won't solve it.

I'd be very suprised if Trooper makes it out alive of this mess.

Either everything gets disproved and everybody makes it out unscathed or Auburn gets caught, the AD and football coach on down get fired and Auburn football becomes irrelevant for the next decade. No inbetween at this point. The allegations are that a large amount of money went from an affiliate of the university or the university itself directly to Newton's family; if the penalties come, they are going to be enormous.

Several bookmakers have pulled the line

they know something

No they don't... they're just shutting down trading (as an analogy) during a period of potential high volatility.

They make their money by creating lines that will hopefully ensure a relatively even split of bets. The fact that they closed betting is more of a reflection that they don't know anything... and therefore don't know how to adjust their lines.

I agree completely, just that it didn't suprise me that Trooper was the lead recruiter for Cam.

Yes. All you are doing is hurting your program long-term. And the NC is going to be pulled and any money you make most probably will be as well.

It's going to suck if it's not true but you have enough info to make a short-term decision. The problem is Cam has no credibility and now it's going to hurt him whether it's true or false.

I agree with you that it will hurt him no matter the outcome, but I don't think it is a matter of true or false. I think it is more of a proof issue. Whether they can prove it or not will what this will come down too in the end.

IMO this game being off the books in Vegas is the most telling thing so far. I gotta think oddsmakers connections are better than any FOX/CBS/ESPN reporter.

to be fair, werent those LaMichael James allegations proven false? ... I believe there was a police report that outlined what actually happened

Pretty sure he plead guilty from Wikopedia: On February 17, 2010, James was arrested on charges of domestic violence. On March 12, 2010, James pleaded guilty to physical harassment, receiving 24 months probation. Following the guilty plea, it was announced that James would be suspended for the first game of the 2010 season

You're right it's already happening...so why single out one kid.

Auburn should really start considering their long-term future now, I don't see how they have any choice but to bench him. People are coming out of the wood work on this now.

Auburn is going to be in some big do-do.

Exactly. My thinking is Auburn must have given him the money and they don't want to bench him because they are going to get busted too either way. Because no way would you just brush it off. You would investigate it internally and not risk your program. I feel they took a chance and wanted a great season no matter what. Now if they win it all the sec and ncaa will be disgraced because the titles will get yanked. Auburn knows they will face the big penalty. If Usc got busted out for a player doing things without them knowing then Auburn will have to get shut DOWN!!!
