Except if part of the Cam inquiry is that we paid cash but simply lost out in the bidding, explaining our odd sudden loss of supposed interest in Newton about the same time the NCAA said they were coming to town. Attempting to buy a player ain't as bad as actually buying him, but it ain't good either; so let's hope this story stays just in the Plains, but don't bet on it being so.
Two sources who recruit for Mississippi State said that Cecil Newton and his son, quarterback Cam Newton, said in separate phone conversations that his college choice would be part of a pay-for-play plan while Newton was being recruited late last year.
I know I'm parsing words, but that's the wrong answer. The answer either has to be "The allegations are 100% false" or "I'd love to answer the question, but due to this being an ongoing investigation, I have to decline comment.""I'm not going to confirm nor deny nothing that has been taking place,"
Drew Rosenhaus to the rescue! Here's the part I don't get . . . I keep hearing and reading comments from Cam and Cecil like

Auburn and the Newton family need to put a lid on this thing and channel all statements through a spokesman rather than feeding the press daily snippets from Cam, Cecil, Chizik etc.
C'mon, bham... I know there's zero to convict Cam right now, but where there's smoke... And this is looking like Mt. St. Helens right about now. Given we already know about the schools donation to Cecil's parish (IIRC), it's not that big of a jump to simply lining his pockets. Based purely on what you've heard, bottom line, do you really, truly, honestly feel that Cam did or did not accept money from Auburn or people associated with Auburn to play football there?I remain contrarian on this - there isn't enough "there" there.
