Auburn/Cam Newton situation (merged)

I understand the point, but I disagree with the logic. If Auburn knows he has been paid then they have known it for the first half of the season as well. Other than the number of forfeited games, I cannot imagine that the punishment will change. Of course the NCAA is not known for its' logic.

Are you saying that the punishment increases with the notoriety?

The punishment goes along with the crime, Auburn is turning a blind eye NOW, everyone knows when in doubt you bench the kid. If he were a long-snapper he would be sitting on the bench. I have seen no evidence that Auburn knew he was getting paid prior to the season.

Yes, the punishment will be much more serious... all you have to do is go look at the NCAAs report on USC. It wasn't that Bush got paid, most of the punishment was the school not doing their job and turning a blind eye. LSU was paying a player last year by a COACH, yet no NCAA sanction, why? LSU got rid of them right away. This isn't rocket science, it's up to the school to regulate itself and when they fail to do it and fail to use common sense, yes, the world and the NCAA will see right threw it.

The punishment is going to look like chump change if he shows up for the Heisman and Auburn shows up for the BCS.
I think you're just hoping they'll sit him now because Auburn needs to lose two in order for LSU to have a shot at an SEC championship.

True LSU MIGHT have a shot. That is irrelevant. Punishment will be harsh beyond words if they continue on with this circus... just watch. If it were LSU, LSU fans would be screaming to bench him.

If the athlete department doesn't know what the consequences of continuing to play him. This will be Auburn's 8th Major NCAA violation. And now you have a school ignoring the obvious.

Unless Auburn believes he and they are clean. All others right now are assuming guilt.

Which is why you are not getting even a denial at this point. This will not be settled in court. Not once did you hear Auburn say they didn't think he got paid, they said he is eligible because the NCAA hasn't come out an ruled him ineligible. Saying he is eligible is not the same as saying they believe he wasn't paid.

LSU sat a guy last year as soon as they had information that he was getting paid-- did they know for sure, Nope. Put him on the bench. Did an investigation and canned both the player and coach... no NCAA punishment because LSU took immediate action.

This will end even worse for Auburn, wait till you see the Heisman and BCS circus.

Didn't think it would go to court. Bush was found guilty at USC and there were no court actions. I mean guilty in the eyes of the NCAA. If he is guilty, I agree, crap storm for Auburn. Either they are buying time, or they in fact believe they are innocent. Time will tell.

Auburn trying to delay and put their head in the ground is what is really going to cost them. See the problem is not the player getting paid, it's the team not doing anything about it once they know or should have known.

Auburn is getting close to the Ax if they continue this. We'll see... the circus should be fun to watch.

If the payment was cash i can see why Auburn is denying, no paper trail . How far into people's private life can they get without a lawyer? Auburn clearly thinks they've done no wrong and until someone proves it, then it's all speculation.

Clearly a lot of smoke, but cash is hard to track.

This isn't a player getting money from an agent without the school's knowledge.

This is, allegedly, a university negotiating payment terms with a player, and buying his commitment. If Auburn bought him, sitting him isn't an option.

That would be admitting guilt and let the burning of the Barn begin.

As any pimp would tell you, "Gotta get your money's worth out of dem biatches."

I don't think it's that blatant. Most of these things are handles independently so staffs can feign ignorance.

I heard that Vegas took Auburns upcoming game from the books. Does anyone know if that is true?

Oh, I'm certain it's not that blatant. I don't think Gene Chizik and Jay Jacobs sat down with Cecil Newton and handed him a wheelbarrow full of cash.

But, the MSU coaches say that they were propositioned by Cecil Newton and Kenny Rogers during Cam's recruitment. If that's true, one would think they had a similar conversation with Auburn coaches as well.

Yes.

Has there ever been this much attention over an alleged illegal recruitment and nothing ever came of it?

Not that I recall. I have also never heard so many fall all over themselves to call a kid a great kid when he clearly isn't.

That's the thing. This would be unprecedented if it turns out that Newton and Auburn are clean. I'll side with history on this one and assume guilt on allegations alone. It's also much more fun for me that way.

not really.
He'll go on to play on Sundays, but Auburn may be finished.

But let's not pretend that Newton doesn't have anything to lose.

He was on his way to becoming a first round pick, imo, jmho, fwiw.

Now, with the academic fraud at Florida surfacing, the issue with the laptop, and now the allegations of selling his commitment for a coupla hunda gs, he probably drops to the 4th or 5th round on character concerns alone. That 200k could cost him 20 million.

i dont see how the NCAA could ever prove anything happened, because the Newtons are gonna talk and obviously AU isnt either. im assuming the church payment has been cleared.
