Auburn/Cam Newton situation (merged)

If you can get in trouble for receiving but not asking, it opens way to many doors to players receiving benefits with plausible deniability.

Let's look at the flip side. A family friend may ask for some cash to steer a kid to a school without any authorization or ability.

Clearly it's a gray area when it doesn't come from the kid. When it's the kid's dad it sure looks like a problem but I'm waiting to see how it gets explained.

I've been in the contrarian camp as well but I'm not ready to be in "I told you so" mode.

I do think this puts water on the "Plains Burning" manifesto on Tiger Talons though.

Way too soon to let Auburn off the hook here. Further, the initial stories have turned out to be true in the most part. (keeping in mind the original stories never mentioned Auburn).

It will be years before this is wrapped up.

I will verify your skepticism on this whole thing, your "neutrality" has been unique. But there has just been way too much info and things like "FBI" for this whole thing to just go away with no consequences.

What about the SEC rules ?

"If at any time before or after matriculation in a member institution a student-athlete or any member of his/her family receives or agrees to receive, directly or indirectly, any aid or assistance beyond or in addition to that permitted by the Bylaws of this Conference (except such aid or assistance as such student-athlete may receive from those persons on whom the student is naturally or legally dependent for support), such student- athlete shall be ineligible for competition in any intercollegiate sport within the Conference for the remainder of his/her college career"

Since the NCAA ruled that Cecil did in fact ask for money, then how can the SEC office ignore their own rule?

We have no proof of money exchanging hands except one alleged phone call by the team that lost out on Newton.

No, under the SEC rule you clearly can't receive or agree to receive benefits.

The SEC rule just doesn't prevent you from holding your hand out.

A few thoughts on this:

1) I know some people hate Cam because of "alleged" stuff he did, but he was cleared of the laptop charges, Meyer came out and said that the academic thing never happened (or implied it), and no proof of money exchanging hands.

2) Again, we need to understand that while Cam probably isn't clean, who the real culprit is: Cecil Newton. Doing something illegal to keep a church going is disrespectful and trashy. I understand Cam wanting to help his father. I think a lot of people would be surprised to find they would take money to help their dad (if this did happened).

3) We have nothing to go on here. The only thing we know is Cecil Newton asked for money, or mentioned a pay-for-play scheme to Miss St. We have heard zero proof that Cam Newton or Auburn University knew of this pay-for-play scheme. And if Cecil just asked Miss State, why should Auburn get punished if no money was given to Cam to play football?

4) People are overreacting to the NCAA ruling. They basically told Auburn "Right now, after a pretty solid investigation, we found nothing wrong that Cam did. However, play him at your own risk if we find anything else." Remember, there was a violation committed. However, because the NCAA found nothing that Cam did wrong, he can play.

5) My personal opinion after establishing facts: I know nothing about what actually went down. All we know is Cecil asked for a PTP scheme. That's it. That's all that has come out. There has been one alleged phone call, and it seems the NCAA found nothing on it. I'm fine with him playing if this is all that comes out. We have heard nothing of Auburn or the Newtons mentioning money for a PTP scheme because the alleged phone call.

So if I understand correctly, if I were a blue chip player, my father could go around to however many schools that would listen and just see what they would pony up for my services just as long as no cash actually changed hands? Is that what the NCAA is saying?

guys. WHY YOU MAD?

tennessee has a ton of money....

recruiting just got that much easier for Dooley.

we'll be back on top in 2 years if our boosters will just pony up.

heh.
That'd be something if all of a sudden, every 5-star in the country is signing with Arky St if, by chance, the Walton family were Arky St boosters....

Money doesnt have to change hands

It says agree or receive to agree aid. There has been no proof of an agreement for money to be exchanged. Cecil saying "180K gets you Cam to play" shows nothing about receiving aid.

Assuming that you didn't know what your father was doing and you didn't end up playing for any of those schools, yes.

Just like the blood on the glove proved nothing about OJ killing that girl !!

That list would be worth some money. It would be really hard to prove if I knew anything as long as we worked this out ahead of time.

Here's another: If a student takes a test and makes an F but the teacher changes it to an A....is the student elligible as long as the teacher doesn't tell him?

According to the new Cam Newton rule, a player can get away with anything as long as "he doesn't know about it."

Has there been any evidence? Has Miss State brought up anything significant? When the NCAA went to Miss State and asked "Do you have any proof of Auburn paying the Newtons?" did Miss State provide the "alleged" phone call? Because it sure as hell looks like all those answer are NO at the moment.

This is funny. I've never seen people overreact like this.

Sure, you can ask. But if you receive any aid, then hell yeah you're ineligible. The NCAA has not found any money exchanging hands. If the NCAA found the Newtons accepting money, he'd be ineligible.

I refuse to believe nothing fishy took place, too many dirty people involved, not all the tracks were covered.

Just wait til UT basketball is on the verge of a national championship, then Slive will cool his stance on Pearl. That appears to be the qualifying standard here.

Actually the NCAA ruled that Cecil Newton did solicit money.

"According to facts of the case agreed upon by Auburn University and the NCAA enforcement staff, the student-athlete’s father and an owner of a scouting service worked together to actively market the student-athlete as a part of a pay-for-play scenario in return for Newton’s commitment to attend college and play football. NCAA rules (Bylaw 12.3.3) do not allow individuals or entities to represent a prospective student-athlete for compensation to a school for an athletic scholarship."

Personally, I think Auburn is going down for this when the NCAA completes their investigation. That may take years.

I just think it is important to not overstate what this ruling says.
