If you can get in trouble for receiving but not asking, it opens way to many doors to players receiving benefits with plausible deniability.
I've been in the contrarian camp as well but I'm not ready to be in "I told you so" mode.
I do think this puts water on the "Plains Burning" manifesto on Tiger Talons though.
Way too soon to let Auburn off the hook here. Further, the initial stories have turned out to be true in the most part. (keeping in mind the original stories never mentioned Auburn).
It will be years before this is wrapped up.
What about the SEC rules ?
"If at any time before or after matriculation in a member institution a student-athlete or any member of his/her family receives or agrees to receive, directly or indirectly, any aid or assistance beyond or in addition to that permitted by the Bylaws of this Conference (except such aid or assistance as such student-athlete may receive from those persons on whom the student is naturally or legally dependent for support), such student- athlete shall be ineligible for competition in any intercollegiate sport within the Conference for the remainder of his/her college career"
Since the NCAA ruled that Cecil did in fact ask for money, then how can the SEC office ignore their own rule?
guys. WHY YOU MAD?
tennessee has a ton of money....
recruiting just got that much easier for Dooley.
we'll be back on top in 2 years if our boosters will just pony up.
So if I understand correctly, if I were a blue chip player, my father could go around to however many schools that would listen and just see what they would pony up for my services just as long as no cash actually changed hands? Is that what the NCAA is saying?
Assuming that you didn't know what your father was doing and you didn't end up playing for any of those schools, yes.
That list would be worth some money. It would be really hard to prove if I knew anything as long as we worked this out ahead of time.
Here's another: If a student takes a test and makes an F but the teacher changes it to an A....is the student elligible as long as the teacher doesn't tell him?
Just like the blood on the glove proved nothing about OJ killing that girl !!

This is funny. I've never seen people overreact like this.
Sure, you can ask. But if you receive any aid, then hell yeah you're ineligible. The NCAA has not found any money exchanging hands. If the NCAA found the Newtons accepting money, he'd be ineligible.
A few thoughts on this:
1) I know some people hate Cam because of "alleged" stuff he did, but he was cleared of the laptop charges, Meyer came out and said that the academic thing never happened (or implied it), and no proof of money exchanging hands.
2) Again, we need to understand that while Cam probably isn't clean, who the real culprit is: Cecil Newton. Doing something illegal to keep a church going is disrespectful and trashy. I understand Cam wanting to help his father. I think a lot of people would be surprised to find they would take money to help their dad (if this did happened).
3) We have nothing to go on here. The only thing we know is Cecil Newton asked for money, or mentioned a pay-for-play scheme to Miss St. We have heard zero proof that Cam Newton or Auburn University knew of this pay-for-play scheme. And if Cecil just asked Miss State, why should Auburn get punished if no money was given to Cam to play football?
4) People are overreacting to the NCAA ruling. They basically told Auburn "Right now, after a pretty solid investigation, we found nothing wrong that Cam did. However, play him at your own risk if we find anything else." Remember, there was a violation committed. However, because the NCAA found nothing that Cam did wrong, he can play.
5) My personal opinion after establishing facts: I know nothing about what actually went down. All we know is Cecil asked for a PTP scheme. That's it. That's all that has come out. There has been one alleged phone call, and it seems the NCAA found nothing on it. I'm fine with him playing if this is all that comes out. We have heard nothing of Auburn or the Newtons mentioning money for a PTP scheme because the alleged phone call.
Just wait til UT basketball is on the verge of a national championship, then Slive will cool his stance on Pearl. That appears to be the qualifying standard here.
