Auburn/Cam Newton situation (merged)

This is funny. I've never seen people overreact like this.

Sure, you can ask. But if you receive any aid, then hell yeah you're ineligible. The NCAA has not found any money exchanging hands. If the NCAA found the Newtons accepting money, he'd be ineligible.

So he can be shopped around at no risk?

BTW, I'm not blaming Auburn right now but the NCAA has set a terrible precedent.

Actually the NCAA ruled that Cecil Newton did solicit money.

"According to facts of the case agreed upon by Auburn University and the NCAA enforcement staff, the student-athlete’s father and an owner of a scouting service worked together to actively market the student-athlete as a part of a pay-for-play scenario in return for Newton’s commitment to attend college and play football. NCAA rules (Bylaw 12.3.3) do not allow individuals or entities to represent a prospective student-athlete for compensation to a school for an athletic scholarship."

With Auburn also, or just Miss State? All I had seen/heard was Miss State and a PTP scheme.

I refuse to believe nothing fishy took place, too many dirty people involved, not all the tracks were covered.

And you know what? I completely understand. I'm not trying to preach you down (no pun intended) or what not. So I get it. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if something went down.

I think the major qualm right now is the mess the NCAA is starting, and watching the sec do nothing, while Auburn celebrates all this.

Seems that they are sweeping this under the rug and getting back to Pearl and his troubles...I am sure since it took a year almost for the Cam thing will only be a couple of weeks with Pearl...Crooked yes...Typical yes...I hope that they lose to Carolina this weekend so I can really laugh all weekend...For the SEC and the NCAA to think that he knew nothing about it is just like them believing that he did not know that that damn laptop was stolen...Yes the one he through out the window as they barged in his room but he had no idea...What a crock of sh#$!!! :furious3::censored:

This is where we need clarity.

1) how is "with the knowledge of" determined (very slippery slope

2) is eligibility determination limited to the school where the solicitation occured?

I'm betting this particular Cam ruling is a combo of both.

The SEC’s by-laws state that no parent or guardian or other agent can solicit money on behalf of a player without the player being ruled ineligible.

NCAA just ruled that his dad solicited money from MSU... I guess this rule just got broken and is pushed aside.

Slive is a dirty POS, and needs to be euthanized. Screw him, and the horses D he sucked to get that job.

Unlesss I am missing it, I do not see any media opinion pieces on this and the news has been out for hours now. In times past, the guys at CBS, ESPN and any other news outlet have been quick to have opinions. I wonder why all of a sudden they go quiet? Could it be a payoff by the AA and SEC to keep opinions low until something else blows up and gets coverage? The SEC and AA could really use a good Favre mistress story about now . . .

I can't live with another SEC national champ, even worse a team and fanbase as gay as Auburn....Suspend him.

I will be rooting against auburn if they make it to the championship game. I would rather see Oregon win it, because they haven't cheated. I wish the absolute worst on auburn, and scam newton from this day forward. This is a freaking joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great. Now USC will have a loop hole to get their sanctions reduced or even removed. I am hating Cam Newton, his Dad, Auburn & Miss State even more now.

Here are some twitters from media members that support what I have been saying:

Newton case is not over. This is just immediate eligibility ruling. An ongoing enforcement staff investigation can lead to more later

Summing it up: Cam can play, but investigation isn't over. Auburn is in good shape short-term but I actually think worse shape long-term.

NCAAs decision based on "information available at this time."

If you read between the lines at the end of the release, this violation has been addressed, but the larger investigation likely ongoing.

I went to the USC message board...they seem frustrated about this...

The by-laws do not say "solicit," they say "receive or agree to receive."

This is an important distinction because it gives the SEC some wiggle room in cases like this.

"If at any time before or after matriculation in a member institution a student-athlete or any member of his/her family receives or agrees to receive, directly or indirectly, any aid or assistance beyond or in addition to that permitted by the Bylaws of this Conference (except such aid or assistance as such student-athlete may receive from those persons on whom the student is naturally or legally dependent for support), such student- athlete shall be ineligible for competition in any intercollegiate sport within the Conference for the remainder of his/her college career.'

Or you could have just listened to me :)

Basically the NCAA admitted that he was shopped (without his knowing) and cleared him (individually) on that part.

From here, my question is, why did he go to Auburn? If the reports are correct that he wanted to go to MSU, but was directed to AU by his father, that opens a whole new can of worms for AU.

Sounds like the focus (for now) is on AU and not Cam.

I dont think we've heard the last from the NCAA. Look at the UNC issues that's going on with their football program. I think the NCAA is taking their time to compile all evidence before they drop the hammer on the respective school. Where there is smoke there is fire. They have a lot of research to do into auburns books as well as the boosters. They also have to look into how Cam's father got those renovations done on that church when he didnt have the money before. So be patient and let due process proceed. I do believe theres something thats going to come of this. I just hope its not way after Auburn has won a national title and Cam a heisman trophy.

Here's what is fact: whatever else happens to Cam or Auburn it will occur after the NCAA and SEC cash their checks from the title games.

I don't have the link but remember reading the Cam article in SI earlier this year. In that article Cam details how his DAD made the school decision for him at some Holiday dinner.

Last December the choice of which college to attend came down to two schools—Auburn and Mississippi State. Newton preferred Starkville because of his close relationship with Bulldogs coach Dan Mullen, who had been Newton's offensive coordinator at Florida. But Cecil thought his son should choose Auburn, which had an experienced offensive line (four starters were returning) and was only a two-hour drive from Atlanta. Newton let his father make the final decision, and a few days before Christmas, while sitting at the dinner table in his brother's house in Jacksonville, Cecil Sr. uttered two words that would radically alter the college football landscape: "It's Auburn."

When we arrest folks for dope, the excuse we hear a lot is "Those arent my pants". Even though its the ones they are wearing.

This made me think of this

Had a late wake-up today, and saw this as soon as I get out of bed.

Unbelievable. This can't be the end of it.

A USC player takes a ride in a golf cart and can't play, but the NCAA knows for a fact that another players father outright asked for $180,000 for his son's signature and he's fine?

I've never been this disgusted with the NCAA.
