Bad Beats, Monster laydowns...Poker discussion

The guy to my left, the original raiser, goes all in for another hundred. Everyone folds around to me. I struggled with it and folded and he showed me AK. I know I was ahead and all and he was drawing awfully thin, but I just did not have a good feeling about it. I'll never know what would have come, but as of right now it was a bad lay down.

Even if an Ace came, it was still a bad laydown. DUCY?

KK is an auto call preflop to me. It is really rare I could lay those down.

It is easier to lay them down in a cash game than a tournament. In that particular hand, I only had invested $25. To call, I have to invest another $100 into a pot of $160. Whereas in a tournament you have to maximize your big hands and can't be patient.

True you know the game very well but I would have played KK but I am sure there are many hands I would play you would play different also.

I hade a argument with a friend who is a decent player.

He said he rather play a table of Pros. than play a table of bad players if it was the finale table. He said because bad players make bad calls and suck out more. I will stick with the bad players to win. thoughts?

In a cash game, I'll take bad players all day long. In a tournament, I prfer playing against people that know what they are doing and just try to minimize my own mistakes.

It would appear my other thread got deleted. Don't see why. We was just havin' some fun.

Well, you were ahead, so it was probably a good laydown. I'm sure he would have spiked an A.

Correct, if by "sure," you mean that his chance of winning is less than 1 in 3. Terrible laydown.

Obviously you missed the cynicism in that remark.

Being ahead is not the only factor, especially in a cash game. You have to consider what you have invested and be willing to get away from hands where the cost to secure a small investment is simply too high. In a tournament game, not so because the blinds escalate and so you have to take your chances a bit more, as the saying goes.

I was invested $25 into the pot and had to call another hundred to see if I could hold up. I also had in the back of my mind one of Daniel Negraneau's rules, which is that if there is a raise, a reraise, and an all-in, someone has aces.

That is exaclty the scenario I was in.

I see your point. Obviously, it depends on who you are playing with, as well. All too frequently, in- or under-experienced players tend to overvalue certain hands (two face cards, connectors, low pairs). They don't call AK "Anna Kournikova" for nothing!

However, if you are playing with tight players, avoiding a big pot commitment after more than one raise with anything less than the Nuts isn't a bad idea.

A hand last night.

I had AJo. vilan has position

I raise 3x blinds and get heads up.
FLOP A, 10, 6, rainbow

I bet 3/4 pot
Vilan calls
Turn 8
I bet all in
Villian calls and flips 6Q
River is 6

Applying the math from before ...

Five outer (the three remaining Q's and the two remaining 6's). At 2 percent each on the last card, he's ten percent to win the hand.

If calling your all in was in the range of 10 percent of the pot, it wasn't a bad call.

My first suspicion, however, is that it was horrific.

Villain will lose a lot of money playing poker.

My other suspicion is that he already has.

What was your stack size and villain's stack size? This matters for your play on the turn.

I was playing the 1-3 NL table at Sams Town saturday night. I lost about 300 in back to back hands in which I had pocket K's to a suckout straight and a suckout flush.

I was out of position both times, but showed power to push everyone out and rake the blinds. Worst back to back hands I've had at the casino tables ever.

This is why I only play poker for fun, and not with a ton of money.
