The problem is protesters are not organized. Even if 90% of them want to do it peaceably outside government buildings, everyone in the media and their political opponents will still focus on the 10% of protesters who are looting.
That is a problem. Is it a logistical problem or a problem inherent in the way modern day protestors (MDPs) band together? I believe it is the latter. This observation alone should further distinguish he difference between protestations of old from current ones
In an age when checkerboard Neyland is possible in 7 days, flashmobs coordinate precise performances in public spaces, and anyone with a cell phone can reach out to thousands with the click of a button, we can assert that MDPs have a greater availability to coordinate efforts when compared to historical events. The MDPs choice to not utilize the means of communication available isn't a relection on their plight. It is a reflection on their mentality.
They are angry. Rightfully so in some instances. Rather than channel their anger in organization first and actions second, they take action striking out at the easy targets. Targets in many instances, which have absolutely nothing in common with the genesis of their anger. In fact, the victims of MDPs are there providing goods and services to the people who live in a particular area. Blinded by anger and energized by opportunity, they vandalize the establishments which serve them during peaceful times.
What the media and policians do are inconsequential. They will do what they've always done. Sensationalize, frighten, and become opportunists in their own way. Using the stories they project as a way to usurp freedoms and sway public opinion. The good news is the same mechanisms available to MDPs to organize and protest proper targets are available to consumers of news. We can search out the actual story and are no longer dependent on media and politicians versions.
