Basketball Coaching Rumor Mill Heating Up...

I would take Raleigh-Durham over the ATL as well. There's a lot more to do in the area than people realize, and it's close to all sorts of things without the hassle of dealing with ATL traffic. I think from a pure basketball standpoint it would be easier to sell NC St. GT has had a bunch of great players come through, but not a lot to show for it. Neither Duke nor UNC go after a lot of Triangle area talent so it wouldn't be that different recruiting wise for GT or NC St.

I hear ya! I live just northeast of Raleigh, all of my employees are State grads. Kind of fun to hear all of the excitement before both football and bball season, they are so optimistic! Then as the season wears on it turns to "wait till next year...we've got a great recruiting class coming in..." NCSU could be a great job for the right coach. You are right, the fanfare is very passionate and they can pull a great class if they play their cards right.

FWIW...I would live in the Raleigh Durham area long before I would ever live in Atlanta.

No doubt. I've never spent too much time in the RDU area, but I have no desire to live in Hotlanta. Fun to visit, but not my cup of tea for living.

State certainly has more basketball tradition to sell, and Atlantans are generally apathetic about their sports unless they're winning, but the Atlanta area has more recruits and less in-state competition for them. Wouldn't be totally unlike recruiting football in the state of Florida for Florida, FSU, etc. Think about the talent out of the Atlanta area recently: Dwight Howard, Josh Smith, Randolph Morris, Derrick Favors, etc. The right coach could keep those guys at home.

NC State has proven they have no problems getting the best players (granted GT has proven they can get some amazing one and doners) and I find the home grown thing to be stupid. If you can get the best players period, don't let a home grown player that's not quite as good get in the way. The whole triangle is full of a bunch of transplants anyways, they aren't going to care a lot if the player is from Fuquay-Varina or North Dakota

There has been a lot of interest in the vacant Florida Gulf Coast job. Names range from up-and-coming assistants, to former NBA and DI head coaches - quiet a list! Here are the names that I've heard that have expressed some interest in the job:

Casey Alexander -Associate Head Coach Belmont

Anthony Anderson - Associate Head Coach Florida International

Rodell Davis - Former Assistant Coach Providence

Joe Esposito - DBO Minnesota

Pete Froedden - Assistant Coach Lipscomb Univ.

Tom Green - Former Head Coach FDU

Dan Hipsher - Assistant Coach Alabama

Matt Langel - Assistant Coach Temple

Kyle Macy - Former Head Coach Morehead State

Larry Mangino - Assistant Coach SMU

Steve Merfeld - Assistant Coach Creighton

Eric Musselman - Former Head Coach Golden State and Sacramento (NBA)

Richard Pitino - Assistant Coach Florida

Rick Scruggs - Associate Head Coach Appalachian State

Jan Van Breda Kolff - Former Head Coach Cornell, Vanderbilt, Pepperdine and St. Bonaventure

He's easily the best candidate around.

How about Richard Pitino? He comes from good coaching bloodlines and he's from that Billy Donovan coaching tree, which has been thriving as of late.

Donvan > Grant > Smart. Pretty sick.

Some updates:

- I’m not sure what’s going on at Arkansas. Some people are saying that Missouri head coach Mike Anderson will be introduced as the next head coach at Arkansas as early as tomorrow. Others are saying it’s not a done deal yet, and Anderson may not be the guy here. We’ll keep an eye on this one...

- The search at Fresno State is beginning to heat up. I’ve now heard that North Carolina assistant Jerod Haase may be involved here. Haase is a California native who played at Cal for a year before transferring to Kansas. I've also heard St. John's associate head coach Mike Dunlap may be involved here. He is currently the favorite at Wyoming, but there is definitely some mutual interest here as well.

- With each Richmond win, the stronger the rumors about Chris Mooney heading to Georgia Tech become. Mooney is making a great case for himself to get an ACC job with the Spiders tourney run, and the powers that be at GT seem enamored with him.

- This is a big week for Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl. Expect an announcement about his future sometime in the next few days. Most people are speculating that he is done – I am very curious to see how this plays out.

- UConn Director of Men's Basketball Administration Glen Miller’s name has been rumored to be on the short list at Colgate. Miller has been the head coach at Penn, Brown, and Connecticut College. He is 233-209 in his 17 seasons as a head coach and definitely understands how to get it done at an academic school like Colgate.

- We hear Utah has put together a package for Dave Rose (BYU moves to the WCC and loses Jimmer). BYU will not be the same job it currently is. Utah's move to the Pac 10 is a better jump and he can recruit the same kids he currently does and does not have to deal with the honor code.

- Tennesse will go after Wichita St HC Gregg Marshall, Belmont HC Rick Byrd, VCU HC Shaka Smart, Butler HC Brad Stevens and Richmond HC Chris Mooney.

- Look for Arkansas to go after Josh Pastner and or Buzz Williams with Reggie Theus as the Dark Horse.

- Notre Dame HC Mike Brey continues to be mentioned for the NC St job as well.

Any chance we take a stab at Grant?

Some people seem to think so, but I'm not an insider so I'm not really sure.

These are just updates a friend who was in the coaching profession for many years passes along.

I really like Rick Byrd, a lot actually but don't like him for UT and not sold on Smart, but I'd be happy with any of the three you highlighted. I do think Brad Stevens is a long shot though.

Between NC State and Georgia Tech, you take NC State. There's no reason at all they shouldn't be a powerhouse, other than they've consistently hired the wrong coaches and ADs for the last 25 years. Yes, you have Duke and UNC right down the road, but Duke and UNC have always been good, and have always been right down the road, and yet from the 1940s until 1990, NC State was every bit as good as they were. Nothing has changed since 1990 except that the Wolfpack keeps shooting itself in the foot.

Plus, as a longtime resident of the Raleigh-Durham area who is familiar with Atlanta, I can tell you I wouldn't move from here to there if you doubled my salary to do it.

If UT hires Gregg Marshall now, I think I will be sick. Not because Marshall is a bad coach, but because he was a top candidate after Green, and after Buzz, and we passed both times.

According to the Providence Journal, Providence College has reached an agreement in principle to hire Fairfield's Ed Cooley as its next basketball coach. Cooley, who is a Providence native, is expected to be introduced in the next few days. We'll pass along the official release when we get it.

**UPDATE**

Providence has officially hired Ed Cooley. See the press release below. Cooley will be formally introduced at a news conference on Wednesday, March 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the College's Mullaney Gymnasium in Alumni Hall.

I thought I heard/read he had an extra-marital "issue" and Notre Dame admin. was not happy about it... something like that anyway.
