Bishop should be #2 back

I really like our RBs. We have no worries at that position.

We haven't even seen Peyton Lewis yet in orange either. He is super fast and will be RB2 next season behind only Sampson IMO. He has a burst and top end speed like that VOL that lead the SEC in rushing last season averaging 9.6 yards per carry. Hes 6ft2 also, will be a good NFL back IMO. The next feature back after Sampson.

Fwiw I am a big fan of Bishop and bet he ends up in the rotation this season. I like him better than Seldon. He is a much more natural RB because he ran for over 6000 yards and a million TDs in HS. He knows how to be the "bell cow" and given the opportunity he would carry this team for a whole game. He runs hard behind his pads and gets north and south instead of dancing around or always looking for a cutback lane like many younger backs often do.

That’s not a missed block. That resulted from a weird situation where Sampson got tangled up in traffic and fell down, then Karic blocked his man over Sampson. That’s not an example of poor pass pro.

I’m asking if he missed a protection or block. If not, I don’t understand your comment as it relates to this year.
That is still a missed block! BTW, are you saying ONLY the few plays he had this year can be used for eval?

No. It wasn’t a missed block. On a missed block, the defender doesn’t actually get blocked…legally or illegally. Karic was blocking his man and leg-whipped Sampson, causing him to fall. Then Karic blocked his man over top of Sampson, resulting in the penalty. In no world is that a missed block by Sampson.

If you’re going to say he’s terrible as pass pro this year, then yes, I’m saying point to missed pickups this year. Seems pretty reasonable. The coaches have said he’s improved in that area, so if there was a missed block or pickup Saturday, I’d like to know when and where it was. Otherwise, you’re assuming he’s the same player he was as a freshman and sophomore without pointing to any evidence of that.

This discussion illustrates the wisdom of the word "or" on a team depth chart.
A wealth of riches. Hope we don't have to cash in any annuities.

This thread illustrates what happens on VolNation when we have no quarterback controversy.

Again, a wealth of riches!
Happy Labor Day, y'all!

Lewis had four carries Saturday.

Nice. I dont think the other backs will be able to keep PL off the field more and more as the season progresses. For the same reason Sampson played as a freshman...he has the burst and top end speed to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. The way we spread defenses out, our RBs usually just need to make 1 LB or DB miss...and it's off to the races. We are loaded at RB, just not much SEC experience. What a great time to be a VOL. Those of us who weathered the last 20 years of misery...game by game..should be thankful for these exciting times IMO.

Ok, go check the replay. You don't need to watch much....

After TN first score, the Mocs fumble and TN recovers at about the 40 yard line. The first play is a quick out pass to McCoy so fast there was no blocking required. However, note where Sampson is on this play. The next play is a second out pass to McCoy but a little slower throw. Also note the pressure starting to occur on Nico. Once again Sampson out of position.
The next play Sampson has a great run to about the four yard line. The next play is a short pass to E Davis for a touchdown. On the play a guy is rushing Nico from the right side. Sampson appears frozen and the guy quicky run around Sampson with no contact. (Sampson turns to recover) This would have been a sure sack of Nico if not such a quick pass. You go look !!!

You guys... my opinion isnt worth any more than anyone elses, but Im yelling yall.. Seldon is the best pure RB on our squad. Remember... his injury put him WAY behind this offseason and through training camp. He shows up Saturday and barely looks to habe missed a beat. He can really catch as well. He may be #1 if he didnt get injured. Or, at least 1B.

Thanks. This is what I was asking for after your first post. Not sure why you didn’t just post this then instead of referencing the chop block. I’ll go watch.

Sampson did have minimal contact but he forced the defender outside which created the time needed to throw. So he did his job.

Yeah Sampson still has to work on that but he’s come a long way.

What a great “problem” to have. We have to be able to punish the opponent on the ground to get the most out of our passing game. Look out if the o-line play is up to snuff and our RB room is as good as appears. We got dudes that can run routes…this team could be deadly.

Bishop just runs angry. That’s an intangible coaches simply can’t teach.
A few things going on with Bishop that people aren’t cognizant or purely aware of.

- Colleges backed off because he had waaay too many carries in HS. (which is why Heupel let him sit a whole year to just let his body recuperate)
- Karns didn’t really push for colleges for him. He was going to play with Chadwell and Coastal Carolina and that was that…
- You can check his recruiting thread- and I said that thought Bishop would be a 4 star RB had played with Mater Dei HS out here in California.
- People get caught up on the title of Walk-On or Greyshirt whatever.

Truth is he’s a 5’11 205 lbs Running back that is patient and has really strong leg drive. He catches the ball smoothly and is a threat in the pass game. He’s also fast. 4.47 if I were to guess.

He’s like Josh Jacobs was at Alabama. Surrounded by heavily recruited RBs that were indeed worth their ranking….but he was still just as good. Even though he was 3 star from Oklahoma.

I guess I’m trying to say don’t feel bad if Bishop is outperforming everyone but Sampson. I am also very high on the other RBs but right now Bishop is better than Seldon, Keith, and Lewis….
Just my opinion.

And he’s very underrated. Even when Seldon gets healthy I don’t think he will out perform Bishop. Because Bishop is…better.

It’s very unexpected. But we all shouldn’t feel bad, because…imagine trying to tackle this guy if he went to the transfer portal to Florida or South Carolina. That would really suck.

#18 looks great on him too.

If this were 2013 we’d all be hyping Bishop like I am. But we have some studs in the backfield.

Bishop got 5 carries. It's beyond ridiculous to see a kid get 5 carries (against Chattanooga no less) and think you know better than the coaches who have been watching him practice for hours and hours. Let them do their jobs. Stop making idiotic proclamations like this.
What the hell are you talking about?

5 carries for 60 yards
Seldon 7 carries 47 yards.

What does the amount of carries he have to do with anything?

Why are you so against it??
Because he’s a “walk-on” . He had a full ride to Coastal Carolina…

Speaking of coaches- they have been praising him all year. Literally the whole time Seldon has been healing, Bishop and Keith have carried the load.

So if he runs for another 60 yards and a TD while Seldon runs for 20 yards against NC State will my proclamations be so ridiculous??

You don’t even know why you said that other than “star ranking”. So be quiet 🤫

Just in case you misinterpreted what I was trying to convey, running angry is a great attribute for a RB to have. Defenders eventually get tired of getting punished every time they have to make a tackle.

He’s one of the best pure athletes on the team.
But he’s still learning RB…
He had 1800 total yards of offense in HS in Virginia. In a weak classification.

He’s never been healthy since he’s arrived.

But he got the surgery he needed so now maybe you will be right. Maybe he will be the beast we hope. He’s not a bust by no stretch of the imagination.

Luckily we have Bishop who took the best shots of the 1st team defense all off-season while Seldon and Lewis healed up.

Haha.

I was explaining his talent not his demeanor.

Yes he runs like a bull. I 100 percent understood what you were saying.
