Breaking: Cuonzo Martin hired at Tennessee

Complaining about posters is a way of life here at VN.

Most on here act like they have all of the answers but all we really have are half-educated opinions. This guy had to live, eat and breath basketball his entire life, so I say wait and see.

Our recent troubles took us out of consideration for the coaches most of you wanted for the most part. This fellow is impressive if you listen to his sincerity when he speaks. If he holds this current team together, we will be fine. He might actually know how to improve the play of a team during a season. Something Pearl failed to achieve with this team this year. They regressed as the season went along.

Welcome, Coach Martin!! GO VOLS!!

:good!:

Already listed as our coach on Wikipedia. Wow, times are a changin'.

Says he played in East St. Louis. I don't care if he lived in a bubble there ... this guy has to be tough.

Interesting notes ...
Cuonzo Martin became the fifth Division I head coach to come out of the Gene Keady (Purdue) coaching tree, following Bruce Weber, Steve Lavin, Kevin Stallings and Matt Painter. Not bad pedigree there.

I think its sad that most basketball fans would understand that Tennessee has been elevated to a national stage from Pearl's sucess here. BUT to expect to reap those benefits right now with possible post season sanctions hanging over our heads is unrealistic. These are the worst conditions to try to poach a big name coach.
Also look up Coach Martin before you decide to jump off the ledge. He comes from an impressive coaching tree. I like his chances to be sucessful in this conference. If he is anything like what Matt Painter has become I will be stoked. Should run a version of the motion offense and play physical hard nosed defense.

Okay, it's a strange hire. But l thought all along our roster has been almost depleted, this year's recruiting is pretty much history and there are still the NCAA sanctions, whatever they may be. This guy is a place saver - wait three or four seasons and hire a real coach that can put UT back on the national scene. Until then, we just muddle along, happy if we don't lose to the good teams by more than 20. The next few years are not gonna be pretty.

I can just see all the highly ranked players in the nation dying to play for a no-name coach. NOT!!!!!

Thanks Mike for taking us down a couple notches. :clapping:

Just because he came from a small school, does not mean recruits/ high school coaches do not know about him. He was a key recruiter as an assistant at Purdue and played in the NBA! Do a more thorough review of him and you will find more. Also watch his youtube video (thread on vn) in his press conference!

Hmmm? This is a wait and see situation-just like Dooley. I know Bruce was a mid- major but this is shocking!

I had hoped that we could capitalize off of the Pearl era in a much better way. Martin could very well work out for us, but his recruiting is going to take some time. I find it hard to believe UT couldn't land someone with more of a track record, but that doesn't make Martin a bad hire. I'll just be OK with this until I see more evidence as to what he can do at UT.

What the heck are we doing? I bet we got him dirt cheap! What a disgrace! Say By-Bye to both Jones and Ware now. They definitely will stay away now.:no::shakehead:

Lol which one of you edited this into his wiki page?

"On March 27, 2011, after 3 seasons at Missouri State, Martin was hired as the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, Thus ending Tennessee's chances of being decent ever again. "

:eek:lol: that's epic

Don't know anything about C Martin, but another quick hire by Hambone, he's great at hiring coaches you have to google to learn about

Get ready because the next headline in Tennessee sports will be the firing of Mike Hamilton. Wow, he just let down the Tennessee fan base completely with this hire. I hope the money you saved was worth it because the ticket sales will take a toll this year. I'll always be a Tennessee fan, but nobody wants to spend their hard earned money on watching this guy coach our Vols. This guy will never be half of what Bruce was for our university.

How does this compare to the Pearl hire? Are they the same caliber coach at this point in their careers?

You have internet in Church Hill?

Yeah! What have I missed? I know Ware stated he was staying. Jones at last check stated he wanted out. Hopson and Harris both have decided to give the draft a go.

Those top two MSU recruits hopefully will come with Martin to UT. I think that proves CHURCH HILL has internet unless I'm in outer space! :p

Dang bro, just chill out for second. This was a solid hire. Hammy still may get the boot, but the AD finally made a wise decision for once.

How did he exactly let down the TN fans?

Did he not hold a gun long enough to someones head in order for them to take the job?

Or is it he didnt make someone the highest paid coach in major college BB to coach at UT?

Can I borrow your crystal ball? Clearly you can see into the future and I'd like to see what I'll make on my test tomorrow.

Got any tickets you want to sell? PM me the price if you do.
