Can McCarthy survive as Speaker?

I don't see this as a huge issues some are making it. Several here have stated the GOP is wrecked etc...I'd rather have some different opinions (diversity of thought) then everyone in the party goes stepping like the DNC...
The House can't do anything without a speaker, much less pass a budget, etc.

The job of the House is to be 1/2 of the Legislative Branch of government. They actually can do NOTHING without a Speaker.

The Interim Speaker cannot bring bills from committee to the floor or conduct any House business not related to choosing a Speaker. The impeachment or Hunter Biden investigation? Essentially grounded without a Speaker.

Without the House working, the Senate is stalled also from doing anything meaningful.

1/3rd of the Federal Government isn't working and there's ZERO way this doesn't reflect on GOP as being unable to govern, unable to make decisions as a group.

McCarthy being voted out was the FIRST TIME in 240+ years a Speaker has been voted out by the House. It's definitely a bad look.

I'm disgusted by the infighting. Governing is compromise. Some of these House members look like toddlers who will just shut down the entire Congress if they don't get their way.

It's frustrating. "Oh they compromised. Traitors!"

Totally understand the frustration but having those differences leads to that compromise...problem is that any compromise is pushed as "traitorous" when in reality its better. It will work itself out and eventually we will be better off for it..

The Democrats voted unanimously to remove Speaker McCarthy. I wonder if they still think last week's cute little trick to embarrass the GOP was a wise decision.

Weaksauce.

The problem is the inability of the GOP to control the extremists in their ranks. Plain as day.

Agreed that the GOP does not march in lockstep. But still the House is without a Speaker. To those who feel that is a problem, remember that it is thanks to 100% of the Democrats and about 4% of the GOP.

Securing a Speaker of the House is a bit more than simply "not marching in lockstep." The kind of disfunction and disarray we see in the GOP in trying to control the likes of Gaetz is in some respects inevitable in the deathspiral of the Republican Party.

Its your own fault, championing a buffoon like Trump, as the vanguard of the party. Look what it got you. Barely a majority in the House, a completely inept majority, and likely going to permanently lose even that starting in '24.

Face it, MAGA and Trump were a fleeting fancy, a chimera, a tinsel-driven distraction. But hey, its your funeral. Stick with that game plan to the bitter end (which is upon you, by the way), if you dare.

It was strange how he barely lasted a day as the front-runner.

Mmmmm.... I am not sure about that claim. I haven't seen any real evidence that was actually the reason anyone voted against him, though some might have hidden behind it to justify a MAGA-fear based no vote.

So, I take it that not having a Speaker is less important than sticking it to the dysfunctional GOP.

As I understand it, 10 days or so ago the Dems offered to support McCarthy if he made a deal with them on certain items. Not sure what they were. McCarthy turned it down. Dems have since indicated they would revisit it. It has been turned down again.

Fact is, although the GOP technically has the majority, they have some faction of malcontents that won't let it operate in the way it has operated for, oh I don't know, 200 + years?

The Dems have done what they should -- offer to support a candidate who will act in a way they like. That's the same thing as the GOP right now -- they tell potential Speakers they will vote for him IF he agrees to do x, y, z. Their problem is that while the great majority would support a candidate who would do x, y, and z, there are more than a few who say no to x, y, and z, and will support him only if its a, b, and c.

The Dems are not obligated to take a worse deal than they would otherwise be entitled to seek just to solve this problem for the GOP.

It's really sad to push this narrative. Without Matt Gaetz, one of our guys, none of this happens. The GOP needs to get it together or we're going to be responsible for another shutdown which costs us seats every. single. time.

Even if this were a Dem issue, it's working. But it's not. The GOP has enough members RIGHT NOW to pick a Speaker without any Dems. They can't. There's no sense in trying to spin this as a Dem issue. It's ours. America is going to see that clearly.

Granted a couple of "our guys" set the stage for this fiasco. My point is that the Dems decided to take a joyride at the expense of the GOP, irrespective of what may have been best for the country. The 200+ Dems are up to their eyeballs in the dysfunction.

I hate the size of Federal government, the overreach into our lives is nothing like the Constitution planned. There is A LOT wrong with DC.

Right now, the world could be on the brink of a World War. One of the few things we REALLY need Congress, particularly the House, for is to fund the military, provide resources to manufacture and obtain arms to fight if needed, and keep ourselves safe with defenses. This takes money. The House controls the money. Every day we go without the House being functional is a risk to our military and to ourselves should something go very wrong.

Also, the Speaker is in line after the VP, should something happen to the POTUS. If the POTUS and VP are killed, who is POTUS today? Patty Murray, a Dem Senator from WA. It could be a GOP Speaker but it's not.

Take care of this. ASAP. It's not just politics, it could be extremely crucial for our defense in the next couple of days when Israel starts to level Gaza.
