The dude is an idiot but is this really of consequence to anyone? In the grand scheme of things, who really cares? It's not like the world is less safe now because they did not throw the book at him.

It was literally from the outset something made to be as "consequential" a case as possible. Just a tiny slice of what was being propagated basically everywhere.
