Charlie Strong

Strong s a HC for us is about as goofy as the thread "Why Not Franklin". Both are in their first year and are not going anywhere unless they're asked to leave. And both are intent on building up what they started which is in far better shape than us.

Neither of them is in their first year.

any defense minded coach with 20+ years in the SEC is a qualified candidate, he should get a look no doubt.

Esp after you add in the fact that he could kill it in recruiting South FL.

Jay Graham could recruit TN and Get a staff member to recruit the ATL area.

Leaving aside personal preferences, if that's at all possible, who best fits the profile suggested yesterday suggested by Hart?

He has solid and successful head coaching experience, strong familiarity with the region and conference, and would be excited to embrace among the greatest challenges in football (i.e., winning in today's SEC).

In my opinion, Charlie Strong is the closest fit, with Dan Mullen second only because he is a current conference rival and I am guessing that Hart would rather not poach.

Meanwhile, I bet that James Franklin ends up at Cal.

I don't understand some of our fans. Charlie Strong has had defenses that have been highly ranked for many years, not just at UF, but at South Carolina as well.

His first year at Louisville his defense was ranked in the top 15. You can make the claim of "Big East" if you want, but he's a proven outstanding defensive coach in the SEC. If he hired a top shelf OC, he would have a great chance at becoming a consistent winner in the SEC and someone who could win championships. I'm convinced of that.

As we know, coaches with a consistent track record of great defense have a high rate of success in this conference. The progress Louisville has shown this year isn't coincidence. Some of you bring up the Syracuse game. Bobby Petrino also lost to a .500 team in his 3rd year at Louisville. I doubt anyone would question his coaching acumen. Strong isn't my first choice, but he's definitely high on my list.

James Franklin would be the better hire, if it came down to the two of them. Franklin is a rising star in the coaching business.

Like him or hate him because he coaches for Vandy, the guy is damn good at what he does. He is one of the best recruiters in the nation and is a very good X's and O's guy.

A Strong hire, would not make me very happy or positive about UT's future.

Charlie Strong is a poor candidate for this football program. He is currently having his only good year. He was widely reviled by Gators fans during his tenure there. Starting with his stints as a DC:

1999 SC- 57th ranked defense, 0-11 football team.
2000 SC- 6th
2001 SC- 18th
2002 FL- 31st
2003 FL- 28th
2004 FL- 33rd
2005 FL- 19th
2006 FL- 6th
2007 FL- 47th
2008 FL- 4th
2009 FL- 4th
2010 LV- 18
2011 LV- 17
2012LV- 46

This is an average of 24th ranked defense over that time period. Lets compare say, Chavis:

1999 8
2000 29
2001 19
2002 11
2003 17
2004 39
2005 16
2006 34
2007 62
2008 10
2009 11
2010 11
2011 2
2012 12

An average of 20. Now I dont hear anyone clamoring for Chavis to come take over and rightly so. What are the advantages of Strong over a conversational nonstarter like Chavis? Better recruiter (but not a rockstar) and one good year at a midlevel school? Heck Petrino averaged 10.5 wins a year at louisville; Strong has to win out to outdo Petrino's AVERAGE win total.

If he had another year of success under his belt, sure he would be a consideration and might crack the top 10 coaches or so. But someone like David Shaw has at least two successful years (ie, at least 9 wins) coaching and I think that is the minimum for this hire in which UT literally cant afford to take a chance on someone without a track record of head coaching success.

The "at least two good years" rule also eliminates Al Golden and Fedora, among others, a welcome relief to many other posters on here. This doesnt eliminate Patterson, Mullen, or Jimbo. That has to be where the conversation starts.

Charlie can barely speak
yea i know i can barely write

but you know he thought he never got a head coach job cause of racism

lol

and now you want him for the U of T

can i ask you what we have to prove?????????

I'll take Strong over Gruden..I know it sounds crazy but charlie has been the college game awhile he's a good defensive coach and if Gruden comes, has some success, he will bolt for the best nfl job that comes along and we are right back here again

For some reason I don't think Gruden needs success at UT to prepare for an NFL job. Maybe it's just me. :loco:

Well just in case you don't keep up with things let me help you out here...Gruden can have ANY NFL job that comes open...I will repeat this...ANY NFL JOB...If he wanted back in the NFL he would already be there...He turns down a lot of HC jobs there every year...So saying he would bolt for a NFL job is ridiculous.
